The evil sorcerer Ssor Ssorensen must have attended the "freeze them with perpetual winter" school of villainy, because when he and his minions conquered the town of Noresha, the first thing he did (after taking a nice, hot bath) was encase the city in ice. Then he laid out a thirteen-dungeon obstacle course challenge, filled with mind-twisting riddles, fiendish traps, and a bevy of the most monstrous guardians a conqueror's shoestring budget can afford, because that's what the best of the bad guys do. Strife inevitably brings resistance. A band of heroes led by Yorel the paladin, calling themselves the Phoenix Dragons, are the front runners to challenge the sorcerer and put an end to his menace. This is not their story. This is the story of Endrew the bard, a fallen hero and humiliated former Phoenix Dragon, who has to team up with a pack of misfits just to make it through the week. His companions include an untrained rogue, an unusually sophisticated half-orc mage, a misplaced pixie, a dwarven monk full of unlikely theories, and a halfling warrior who wants more than anything just to be tough. Endrew and his unlikely crew set their sights on surpassing the champions and saving the city from evil, but before they can do that they must surmount their shortcomings just to survive. For a mismatched group that can't even settle on a party name, that may be a tall order indeed.

Fun fantasy in a somewhat ridiculous setting By Mark The Eight-Bit Bard does a wonderful job of creating a good (and funny) fantasy story with good characters in a surprising setting. The classic computer role-playing games of the 80's and 90's that ripped off Tolkien and Dungeons and Dragons, and boiled fantasy characters down to 6 or so quantifiable traits moving around in a grid and slogging through dungeon after dungeon, would not seem a likely place for character development. But Endrew Aric and his unnamed team manage to be engaging characters despite these limitations, and a good story follows along. For those who played these games and read these books in those days, this novel is a whole lot of fun, but it works as a fantasy novel for any kind of reader.Aaron Rath's second novel is quite a bit different than the memoir style of his first work, but it delivers a great, well-paced fantasy read.

By Joel McIntyre This is a delightful story of life through a CRPG computer party's life. I've been playing computer role playing games and reading fantasy books since the mid 80's, and this book is both nostalgia and a clever story from the point of view of a Bard character leading a party through the weird machinations and awkwardness of the old CRPG plots. I caught hundreds of references and feel like I missed a thousand more to historical CRPG, desktop RPG, and modern gaming communities. All that and humor and a clever light touch in a fun plot. Very well worth reading, and at the top of the short list of books in this delightful RPG & gaming nostalgia genera. I can only hope for more books like this!

By Phil P So much fun! This book was a hoot!I played the original final fantasy game on the NES and one on the SNES but hadn't done any since. Never was a big into D&D. Had I been i bet this book would have been even more entertaining.Book is a very creative story about characters who interact in an 8 bit D&D world as well as having to follow the rules that that type of game includes. Great dialog, loved the character interactions and even some of the thoughts about why things are the way they are in their world.Highly recommend for anyone who's done the old school roleplay games and D&D.
