The population pushes ten billion people. The future is bleak. Scientists have determined that if the population continues at its current rate of acceleration, global resources will be depleted in a generation. Earth’s sixth extinction does not include the human race. Something needs to be done. In an attempt to control and decrease population, a mutated form of the measles is released. As a precaution, an assurance plan is placed in motion. A sampling of mankind is hidden away in a protective bunker, placed in stasis where they will sleep through the entire event. They are set to awaken one year later to a perfectly balanced world. Not all goes as planned. Sadly, only a few survive the stasis process. Nora Lane and Jason Rudolph are two of those who survive. When they wake, like the other survivors, neither of them remember how they got there and why. All they know is they must get out. A countdown clock on the door winds down to something. They are ill-prepared for what they will face when that door opens.

It contains nearly all the elements of post-apocalyptic books: sinister government conspiracies, plague, war, deranged future people, cryogenics, attempts to rebuild, and a chance at salvation. Some people wake up after being cryogenically frozen. They are all intelligent, but they can't remember why they were frozen. It comes back to them after a few days as each remembers certain things so they are able to piece the whole thing together. Against all rationality, they go looking for their families. They always do that in post-apocalyptic books even though the families are most likely dead and have been for a long time.Three groups head out in three different directions. They each encounter different aspects of post-apocalyptic America. The characters are pretty well-developed and their reactions to what they see are very real. In some cases, they are devastating; in some cases, hopeful. As other reviewers have said, the main problem with the story is that it just...ends. What happens? What do they find? Is life worth living? We don't know because the story just...ends. I've had this issue with other books by this author. I don't know what the problem is. She is a prolific writer. Why does she have issues with ending her stories? It didn't spoil this book for me because it is really rather good, but it is frustrating. It's a quick read, so it will be worth your time and maybe you can come up with your own ending. Maybe that's what the author really wants after all.

It is almost as if the author ran out of time and turned in an assignment half done. Ending comes flying out if nowhere with very unfulfilling character wrap up. Be prepared to turn a corner - expecting something great - but then hitting a wall with "the end" written on it with spray paint.

Andersen Perhaps Ms. Druga should invest some of her profits from her 'prolific writing career' into a proofreader and/or editor. Surely someone with such a storied background would know the difference between pedaling a bike, and peddling a bike. One of these is wrong! Do you know which one? Ms. Druga doesn't. Tell me, just how does a "windowed blow"? I would surely like to know. Also, it should be mentioned, is the incorrect use of, commas. It seems as though she loaded a shotgun with commas, pointed it at the page, and pulled the trigger. Where there should be a comma. She starts a new sentence. It detracts from the story. "Blood flowed from it, seething at the sliced"?? What the heck does that even mean? Why are the characters putting the buggies "in gear" when they stop? Get it together! You're making a weak story even harder to read.
