Book Eight of Eight in the Spineward Sectors Series: Admiral Challenge After nonstop fleet actions against pirates, Bugs, and Droids, the intrepid officers and crew of the Multi-Sector Patrol Fleet are headed home for a much-deserved—and much-needed—R&R Or so they thought With an ever-growing shadow looming across Sectors 24 & 25, a certain Lady due to make more than a few life-changing additions to the Little Admiral’s home life, and mutinous rumblings echoing throughout the fleet, a quick turnaround toward the nearest shooting war might have been a safer course than heading back to base to regroup Before it’s over, allies will be tested, enemies silenced, life-saving operations performed on unwilling patients, and the first shots will be fired in the coming war with the forces that would destroy the Spineward Sectors and its inhabitants’ way of life forever. It all hinges on whether or not Jason Montagne can emerge victorious from this, his latest Admiral’s Challenge.

Rebuilds are normally boring, but the author did a great job on this one and found several ways to keep the action up. By the points:X The scene where The Admiral deals with his Tractoan problem made the book. That one scene alone. The rest is just gravy.X Major focuses: Rear admiral Janeski/imperials, Nikomedes, org growing pains, family issues, reputation/role of the MSPX Don’t like how Nikomedes storyline was left, nor how it played out with AkanthaX Like how the old Middleton crew rec’d a nice setup for another fun side adventureX Would have liked more than a tease over the clover heartX C’mon with the clover timeline alreadyX Thought the babies would be a bigger dealX More info on MEN / MANX A quick readThe end was where it had to be and not bad considering.I'm giving this the full 5 stars for the Tractoan scene. The overall book was a 4, but that scene and its dialog is one of a few I've read over the years that will stick in my mind long after I've forgotten everything else about this series. Like when the main character gets the silver talent pipes in the scene from Rothfuss' "The Name of the Wind".

By Skybird Overall a good placeholder in the series with a number of setups for the future but we need to see resolution (to some degree) of some of the existing plot lines. I agree with Roknar, cliff hangers are all well and good but there needs to be clarification at some point to supporting story lines. I.E.:Warning: Minor spoilersThe MEN/MAN/Women of Two/Sisters of Three plot line needs to be fleshed out since it appears to be a major driver of the entire series.Akantha along with Elaine (Mom) have both conclusively demonstrated a lack of interest in Jason’s well-being (he received no warning about Crystal/Ishtaraaaa from either/no warning from Akantha about Nikomedes/Elaine clearly stated a greater concern for Crystal/Ishtaraa then Jason’s survival-despite all the protestations to the contrary). For a character that is supposed to be able to see plots within plots and be trained to handle people he doesn’t recognize he is merely a mission to Elaine and a sperm donor to Akantha (he can’t be that slow).Akantha is supposed to be a smart, strong woman but she not only collapsed when Nikomedes threatened her but accepted him as her next Protector if he killed Jason (threats to her children and Hold notwithstanding). There’s a faithful, loving, supportive wife for you. Then she tells Jason “It will never happen again,” and he swallows it? Really? What was the outcome for Crystal/Ishtaraa after Elaine talked to Jason? (Expect her to get sent to a Penal Colony and be rescued in some way by the Society)We know there were three daughters but nothing after Akantha was taken off to handle the breach birth. The assumption would be she and the children were fine since the story continued with Jason continuing to prepare the fleet with no mention of mourning or loss. The Nikomedes thing has become untenable. He keeps coming back like a bad penny. Obviously he will be back again since according to Persus “. . . legends are only fought, challenged, and killed by other legends”: and then . . . we have a bubbling regeneration tank.I want Jason to be a solid protagonist but, as written, he's beginning to fail the realism test. Even the most lovesick idiot wouldn’t continue to put up with the nonsense he takes from his wife and mother. As I said, I love the Series but would like it to hold together a little better.

Another Solid Addition to the Series By Sparta There are a number of key threads in the book such as: (1) the Little Admiral dealing with his Tractoan cultural problem of challenges, (2) the repair and building of new ships, (3) minor combat scenes and fleet movements, (4) further pushing of the secret societies agendas, (5) and dealing with pulling together the old Middleton crew. There are a lot of threads that are being pulled on, which are spoilers and I won’t specifically comment. All-in-all, I enjoyed the story and the way the tale was pushed forward; but, the end result is this novel is a setup of the next book--for a number of ship-to-ship battles and political conclusions are on the immediate horizon.Like my multi-book series there are times you run into a book that tie past events with current and future events, more than action packed scenes that move to more action. This book is a more talk, explain and weave themes together than action driven. Some things were exciting and somethings didn’t sit well with me like the Akantha and Nikomedes interaction.Yes, I am eager for the next book.
