There's one way out ... through the past. Seventeen-year-old Roxy Eisen has been told her entire life she is the hope for her people. The problem is - she's just a normal teenager, except without parents ... or freedom. In 2074 New York City, a tyrant has taken advantage of the devastated United States and claimed the city for her own kingdom. Regal Manager Leona controls the people with the threat of death by portal - a gateway to a black hole created in a project to deflect its pull on Earth. Roxy and a bunker full of kids were hidden below the streets of Manhattan when their parents fought and died in the Resistance sixteen years before. Now Morris, their protector, is dead, and Roxy is in charge. She knows they can't stay hidden forever, and based on information from her friend on the inside, Levi, Leona is closing in. Roxy and Levi could never imagine the journey they will take when they inevitably stand in front of the portal. Who will be waiting on the other side? Can Roxy trust her alliance with Levi, a citadel soldier? What sacrifices will make a way back through time to wage an epic battle against Leona? Can one girl shine brightly enough to lead everyone home? If you liked The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Divergent by Veronica Roth; if you like science fiction, time travel or dystopia, with a hint of romance, there's something for you in Transient, the first book of the Transient Trilogy.

An original mix of drama, romance, mystery, action and sci-fi rolled into one story - fit for all ages By ILuvReading I found this book hard to put down, and when done I immediately started reading the next book in the series. Transient has drama, romance, mystery, action and sci-fi rolled into one story. There's an original combination of many favorite genres & themes in recent popular series of books/movies/TV. You have a totalitarian government with an evil queen / wicked witch / dictator who micro-manages her subjects and dictates who they marry, what job they do, even what they wear. If you cross her, you get banished into a black-hole type of void from which nobody returns. The heroine Roxy is a teenage woman/child who is too busy sheltering other orphans and saving the world to choose between two men/boys who are vying for her affection. (Hunger games, Twilight, Divergent?) She has a special gift of empathy - sensing others' emotions - that reminds me of Counselor Troi of Star Trek TNG. Mix in some time-travel, lots of futuristic gadgets and modes of transportation. The sci-fi is just the backdrop to the real story of how the people cope and interact in seemingly impossible situations. In spite of it all, there is a sense of hope and conviction to morals that are usually missing in similar stories. There are no gratuitously explicit sex scenes or graphic blood and guts descriptions. People still "bond" for life and make sacrifices for others. I would recommend this book as appropriate to readers of all ages.

By Kmarie MK Parsons has used her own unique touch on this sci-fi,dystopian time travel adventure that makes this novel completely original from others out there. She uses a brilliant melding of time, space and worlds, filled with mysterious twists that keep the reader glued to the pages. I couldn't put it down till it was finished. When I tried to put it down, I ended up dreaming about it, so had to wake up and get Roxy to a safe place! The book is full of action, love & humor, and just the right amount of clean romance to keep things interesting. Loyalty, honor, sacrificing for others and strong values are some of the positive messages to be found. Extensive historic research and great attention to detail, help readers visualize the smallest descriptions in the story. The interweaving story lines are all nicely tied together at the end of the book, yet have left me with some unanswered teasers, which I can't wait to have answered in the next book in the trilogy- Paradox.

By Angela Manwiller It took me a while to get into the story, mostly because I'm not a fan of sci-fi or fantasy genres. But my husband is, and we like to read books together, so I stuck with it. The action parts of the story did eventually draw me in to where I wanted to keep reading to the end. There were a couple plot twists that I didn't anticipate, and that makes me want to read the rest of the series to find out what happens! I liked getting a full picture of Roxy, who she is, what her struggles are. And how interesting to have the whole story from her point of view. There were a lot of good statements about sacrifice, thinking beyond what you see, truly thinking of others more than yourself. Didn't care much for the romance that develops, but again, that's personal preference...and many good stories have romance somewhere! Good book to add to your shelf!
