Dead Pulse Rising: A Zombie Novel (The Kyle Walker Chronicles Book 1), by K. Michael Gibson

Review The slavering hordes of undead rule the streets of Baltimore, their decaying forms shambling across the ruined city, implacable and unstoppable. The remaining survivors hide desperately, for all hope seems lost... until an armored fortress on wheels plows through the ghouls, crushing bones and decayed viscera. The vehicle stops and two men emerge from its doors, armed to the teeth and ready to cancel the apocalypse. This is K. Michael Gibson's "Dead Pulse RISING."The story follows the onset of a mysterious disease that infects the populace of Baltimore, turning many into flesh-eating zombies. Whether it is a manifestation of Mother Nature's wrath or a new form of biological warfare remain unknown. What law enforcement officer and ex-USAF special operator Kyle Walker and his partner Marvin Winters know is that they have to use their fighting skills, their massive armored vehicle, and copious amounts of firepower in order to survive and protect those dear to them. Their struggle is further complicated when spooks from the United States Department of Homeland Security arrive and display an unwanted interest in something Kyle has aboard his vehicle. The Homeland Security agents are also hell bent on keeping the Baltimore situation a secret, and are prepared to use any means to keep the greater public in the dark of what has happened to the city. The author combines social anxieties about doomsday scenarios, threats of bio-terrorism, and unwarranted government intrusion to craft an original take on the zombie apocalypse genre. Cannibalistic monstrosities, special forces operatives, tactical combat action, and the end of the world await readers in the pages of "Dead Pulse RISING."

About the Author K. Michael Gibson resides in Maryland with his wife, Kerri, and his five children, as well as his faithful dog, Peanut, and his cats, Oscar and Otis. He enjoys creating art and music and is an avid outdoorsman, spending as much time as he can in the great outdoors. He has worked in law enforcement for the past decade and draws from his experiences to deliver realistic yet imaginative horror.

Michael Gibson is a fast-paced horror novel following the exploits of security guard Kyle Walker as he is caught up in the wake of a mysterious plague sweeping through the Baltimore area. He and his partner Marvin Winters come across a traffic incident during a routine assignment and find police officers being accosted by zombies. The intrusion of Homeland Security into the affair anticipates an escalation of events as Agent Alex Bishop is assigned to investigate. Kyle and Marvin soon discover that Russian scientist Ivan Morozov has confessed to complicity in a Soviet plot to spread a manmade virus throughout the USA. Infected patients are transformed into mindless cannibals, and if the plague is not stopped, the fate of America may well hang in the balance. The author uses a first-person narrative along with omniscient narrative in taking us along the path of intrigue, suspense and wholesale carnage as the security guards join forces with HS Director Don Hammond and his operatives to deal with the outbreak. Kyle’s wife Karen provides us with the female perspective, her role as a day care provider placing her in a precarious position as the zombie menace threatens the children in her charge. The action moves flawlessly from scene to scene, and in the final frame Kyle finds himself compromised into helping the duplicitous HS agents continue on the mission. Yes, my friends, Volume Two is on the way.Pick up a copy of Dead Pulse Rising by K. Michael Gibson. You’ll eat this up and be ready for more faster than a barrel full of zombies.

By Jim I was very interested in the story, especially the part about the government cover up. However, as is often the case, there were a few issues with editing and grammatical errors.Death by spell checker. The wrong word, spelled correctly but not used as it was meant to be used. There were also some issues with his weapons knowledge and knowledge of military tactics and weapons.Minor issues, nothing really serious, but still there were a couple of what the heck moments. Where something changed and I went back to make sure that I was correct and the firearm being used had indeed changed or morphed into a different firearm.I will freely admit that I am something of a gun nut and having served in the U.S. Army like to read books that have their facts as close to real world as possible. Granted we are talking about a Zombie apocalypse, coupled with a Government or at least a Governmental agency cover up. But still real world accuracy makes the story much more interesting at least to me, and it shows that the author has done his fact checking/home work or knows what he or she is talking about.Kyle uses a .357 FTX round. Good choice, but I was thrown for a bit trying to place it. I ended up going to the safe and found out it was or could be the .357 mag 125 grain FTX Critical Defense round from Hornady. Or it might be the 140 Grain Flex Tip eXpanding by Hornady. Personally I like the 125 grain, but that is a matter of personal choice.Cops are not issued .44 magnums or .44 Specials, Desert Eagle does make a semi auto in .44 mag, but not Glock. Richard went from using something that shot a .44 hollow point to reloading his Glock. It has been awhile since I checked (it was in a past issue of the Glock magazine) but I remember that Baltimore PD (as well as the Maryland State Troopers) are all issued the Glock 22 in .40S&W, along with Remington 870 shotguns. Some qualified officers are issued M16 or AR15 semi auto rifles.Marvin uses a Glock in .45ACP, silver (I'm guessing the slide) with fake wood grips. Granted I have never seen one and wondered if it was even possible. So I did a quick search and I'll admit I was wrong, it is possible. Faux wood or 3M Di-Noc Wood Grain Vinyl Wrap can be seen here: http://www.glockforum.com/forum/f8/faux-wood-mahogany-glock-grip-4652/While I do understand what scattershot is, I wondered why the author did not just say buckshot or #4 shot, which is more common. I honestly have not heard the word scattershot used in decades, since I was little and living in lower Alabama. Usually shotgun ammo is referred to by what size the shot is or if it is a slug or specialty ammo.Another reviewer already covered the fact that the stinger missile is SAM (Surface to Air Missile), man portable, or fired from a vehicle or helicopter and is used for ground to Air or when used from a Helicopter it is a ATAS (Air To Air Stinger), but it is not a AGM or ATGM weapons system. So it would not be used as an AGM. Air-launched anti-tank guided missiles are what is typically launched from helicopters. Although I really am wondering if it is possible now. Sort of like the old UH-1B/C/M gunships that used the 2.75 in FFAR (Folding Fin Aerial Rocket) with 17 pound warheads, which was an unguided rocket...point and fire, hope it hits kind of thing. Now I was an 11B (Infantry), so I can not swear that it is impossible or even possible, but hey it could work like the 2.75 FFAR rockets that were used in Vietnam. There were also a few character issues, especially with Kyle. He was in the Air Force, did some time in the sand box and yet has issues with blood and guts as well as no medical training. Still I guess that some people might not get used to being in a war zone, or possibly forget what it was like, but while you do get older and slower you still remember the training.Over all I really enjoyed the book, it was action packed and went at a pretty good pace. I have paid more for books that I really disliked, so I feel that I really got my money's worth with this book and am looking forward to purchasing book two in this series.I think if some of the issues are fixed in the first book, or worked out in the second book I would rate book two with five stars. I would give this book a 4.5 star rating, if it was possible. But since it is not, I went with a four star rating. This book has a lot of potential and well I found myself rooting for Kyle, Marvin and Richard and want to know what happens next.

Spoiler alert. This one starts back in the 80's with the escape of Dr. Morozov from the lab where he worked. The Americans got him out and little did they know his work would bring down the world.Kyle Walker works for an armored car company. He and his seventy year old partner, Marv, a Vietnam vet, have been partnered for quite a while. They do deliveries and pick ups with various banks and businesses in the area. The hours can be long depending on how many pick ups and deliveries they have to make.On arrival at work Kyle heads for the vault to pick up the invoices and items for delivery. One of the items was almost left off. Its a case with an LED light on it. Kyle wonders about it but once he sees where its headed he forgets about it.Kyle and Marv head off but get stopped on the on ramp to the throughway by a massive accident. LEO's are on site.Kyle heads over to see if the officer will let him go around because of the armored car. No luck. The officer is being an idiot and he tells Kyle to get back in his vehicle. That's when the screaming starts.Kids are attacking and biting anyone they can. Those bitten, officers included, rise up and start attacking everyone they can.Kyle and the Officer, Richard, open fire and find the only way to stop these things is with a head shot. Kyle tells Marv, via radio, to get out which Marv does. They then observe white SUV's arrive on the scene. The men are attacked along with everyone else. They withdraw and Kyle sees jets streaking toward them.Kyle, in his military life, was in Air Force Intelligence among other things. He knows what those jets will do and tells Richard they need to leave noow. They get to a police cruiser and take off as fast as they can go to get away from the area.Marv is getting out when a chopper gets in his way. The chopper fires a missile into the road in from of Marv and the vehicle overturns.Marv can't figure out why the chopper is firing at him and the only thing remotely of interest in the armored car is that damned case. Marv grabs it gets out and leaves the area as fast as he can.The jets released bombs that obliterate the area killing everything in that area. Kyle and Richard end up in the overturned cruiser but are alive. They both get out and get the hell out of the area.Kyle and his wife were sweethearts at one time in their lives but grew apart and married others. They met up later and married.Between them they have five kids who are currently with Kyle's family in another State. HIs wife runs a very lucrative day care center for local kids. His wife is tough as nails but has no use for guns. That changes quick when a crazy man breaks into her house and she and the kids are forced to fight for their lives.Kyle and Richard finally find Marv and he lets them know its the case the Homeland thugs were after. The men make their way to the police station and arm up with weapons that were left.Kyle tells them he needs to get home to check on his wife and Marv needs to get home to check on his. Richard goes with Marv and Kyle heads home.Once there he sees his home has been attacked. There is a dead body in the living room and his wife's car is gone. His wife will be on her way out of the area to his parents house. Kyle gets to his gun safe, arms up and heads out to his parents home.Marv finds his wife dead in her bed and knows she's been murdered. He and Richard head out.So begins one pretty damned fine read. This one has Kyle, Richard, Marv, Bishop who leads the Homeland thugs, a Bishop who finds out exactly what Kyle did in the military, missing cases like the one Marv opened, murder, attempted murder, a Bishop who is determined to get those cases back and will use any means to do so, a Kyle who makes his way to his parents house only to be captured, a Bishop who issues and ultimatum to Kyle knowing Kyle can get the job done as he's seen Kyle's service record and knows exactly what Kyle is capable of and Kyle Walker doing his best to protect his loved ones and survive.
