About the Author Mary Sue McAslan is a doctor of pharmacy specializing in medication safety and healthcare quality improvement. Dr. McAslan led her first quality circle in 1981 and has since gone on to lead quality improvement initiatives at the Cleveland Clinic Healthcare System, Kaiser Permanente, the Veteran s Healthcare Administration, and Omnicare, Inc. In her current role as a lean six-sigma black belt, she provides leadership for root cause analysis teams, rapid process improvement teams, 5S initiatives and other Lean process improvement strategies. Dr. McAslan has led efforts to improve patient outcomes, focusing on patient-centered medical homes, telemedicine clinics, and improved discharge planning. She has hands-on experience with one of the most comprehensive health information systems, including computerized physician order entry, e-prescribing, patient portals, clinical decision support tools, and medication reconciliation.
