In this sequel to Portals in a Northern Sky, author Charles D. Hayes delivers another engrossing adventure set in the Alaska wilderness and populated with a colorful cast. A Mile North of Good and Evil invites readers to imagine the potential of visual time travel and to contemplate ideas ranging from the inner thoughts of psychopaths to the possibility of total human extinction.

It’s 2028, seven years after introduction of the Portals System, and the world is on the brink of all-out war. Now known as Adam 21, the Portals technology offers the ability to look back in time and view any event in history from any angle. As a result, new animosities have been unleashed worldwide, based on old ethnic wounds and past aggressions. A Mile North of Good and Evil opens as the turmoil becomes explosive. Bold, creative action is called for.

Convening in Alaska, a group of strategists consider innovative and unprecedented ways to calm global tensions. At the same time, a brazen serial killer with ambitions of unequaled notoriety works his way north, and a retired detective gathers clues on the killer’s trail with the help of his gifted niece. Operating from America’s heartland, an influential religious leader objects to the power of Adam 21 and seeks to subvert it. In a world mad with contempt and hatred, domestic dogs tangle with wolves, and vengeance consumes the minds of those who feel wronged. As these players and their stories converge at a remote location in Alaska, the entire world reacts to living in the shadow of doomsday.

A Mile North of Good and Evil contrasts the brutality of man-to-man combat, wolf attacks, and merciless homicides against thoughtful examination of the existential questions facing the story’s characters. Pondering their own mortality while exploring the nature of good and evil, they come to the profound realization that time is the greatest serial killer in the cosmos and that human life has meaning only so long as it is remembered.

By Rpresley If you have already seriously pondered good and evil reading this book will provide insights that you will not have considered. If you've not thought seriously much about that then you will after reading this book. Besides being a profound significant philosophical work it is an interesting story that will hold your attention and when you get to the last line, like me you will slowly fold up your reading glasses needing a moment to reflect on the experience you have had. This guy makes his characters real, you believe their experiences, and you live in the science fiction they are experiencing. You will wonder about your understanding of history. The way this is written brings their story to life in vivid relief. You will find yourself unable to put it down wanting to read just one more chapter and then just one more.

An Enjoyable Mix of Philosophy and Crime Thriller By Susan Carroll A fascinating weave of thought-provoking philosophy, futuristic vision, and action-packed thriller, A Mile North of Good and Evil entices the reader to examine how events or people are seen as "good" or as "evil." Portals technology has all but eliminated false documentation of history, and those who use it are well aware of the consequences of warfare and abuse of the environment. Yet the world continues to act in self-destructive ways. The central question being addressed is how to break the long-established pattern of negative thoughts and actions. In so doing, Hayes has cleverly used a crime thriller genre to engage the reader in reflection about what is, or can be, most meaningful in life. A very different and worthwhile read!

It mixes a new twist on time-travel with thesearch for a serial killer across the Alaskan wilderness and a new drug thatoffers near-immortailty just as the Earth is about to be destroyed by shockwaves from a supernova. All this action spawns illuminating give-and-takeSocratic dialogs in which the author brings down to earth the meaning ofexistence for those of us who don't normally read the great philosphers. This is a very fun book for those who love a good tale and care about thefuture of humanity.
