All But Human (Fate Fire Shifter Dragon) (Volume 5), by Kris Austen Radcliffe

Review One of my favorite things about Radcliffe's writing is that she never lets the characters grow stale. Although they remain consistent, there is always growth, always new discoveries -- both in themselves and in our knowledge of them. Rysa, Ladon, Derek, AnnaBelinda, Gavin, Daisy, even Brother- and Sister-Dragon ... they are constantly learning more about themselves, constantly growing, and yet remaining true to who they are. They long ago stopped being "characters" and simply became real. I also continue to be impressed with the way Radcliffe has us learning about this world through Rysa's eyes, through her ADHD and her attention issues. It may feel fractured as we read, but that moment when Rysa finally understands -- and as Rysa, so do we -- is such a triumph! We feel like we've won the battle alongside our heroine. -- ★★★★★ Amazon Reviewer

From the Author Q: Rysa Torres, the main character of the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series, has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). What inspired you to write such an unlikely heroine?A: I wrote GAMES OF FATE for my daughter, a real young woman with real ADHD. The FFSD universe may be Urban Fantasy/ Science Fiction, but Rysa's anxiety, her hyperactivity, and her fractured and flitting way of seeing the world are all true to life -- and not attributes of someone you'd expect to save the world.A girl with ADHD can be a hero, too. She may not start out plucky, and may have farther to go in her journey, but don't discount the passion and creativity of someone with ADHD. She can save the world, and in the FFSD universe, she does.Q: How did you decide to include American Sign Language in the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon universe?A: I have a limited understanding of ASL; a family member who is not deaf but is nonverbal uses ASL. It was because of this family member that I realized the nonverbal dragons could also use ASL as a way to communicate. Q: Which Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon titles are FREE when I subscribe to Kris Austen Radcliffe's newsletter?A: GAMES OF FATE (book 1), CONPULSIO (an FFSD novella), and BONDS (book 4.1). Paste the following URL into your browser: tinyurl.com/krisaustenradcliffeQ: How many books are in the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series, and what is their order?A: GAMES OF FATE, FLUX OF SKIN and FIFTH OF BLOOD (books 1-3) make up ACTIVATION: THE COMPLETE FIRST TRILOGY. These three novels are tightly tied together and each picks up on the heels of the previous book. It's best to read them in order.Together, the novellas BONDS, BROKEN and SILENT make up book 4. This miniseries introduces Daisy Pavlovich and Gavin Bower (Rysa's friend who appears briefly at the beginning of GAMES OF FATE) into the FFSD universe.ALL BUT HUMAN and MEN AND BEASTS (books 4 and 5) make up the REDEMPTION DUOLOGY, and like the novels of ACTIVATION, are tightly tied together; and again, it's best to read them in order.Readers may start with either Rysa's story (GAMES OF FATE) or Daisy's story (BONDS). It is best, though, to be caught up with both heroines before starting book 5, ALL BUT HUMAN, where Rysa's and Daisy's paths converge. Also part of the FFSD series: CONPULSIO (a Roman Era novella), plus the short stories "Pop Rocks", "Cinder to Dust", and "Dmitri and the Mad Monk".The series, in order:(1) Games of Fate(2) Flux of Skin(3) Fifth of Blood(plus Conpulsio, Pop Rocks, and Cinder to Dust)(4.1) Bonds(4.2) Broken(4.3) Silent(5) All But Human(6) Men and Beasts(7) The Burning World (coming soon)Box sets:(1) Activation (2) Bonds Broken & Silent(3) Redemption (coming soon)Q:What genre is the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series?A: FFSD is a New Adult Urban Fantasy Romance story within a Science Fiction universe. Dragons, Fates, Shifters, ghouls called Burners, immortal warriors, Roman emperors--they're all here, along with a smattering of nanobots and, well, new tech.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. utterly captivating By Jonel Radcliffe had me hooked from the first page of this novel to the very last. The fast paced story combines intimate relationships with suspenseful events in a way that kept me on my toes. The well-crafted plot had so many twists and turns that I never knew what would happen next, yet couldn’t help but try and guess. Radcliffe writes with a raw & snarky tone that sets the scene for her characters and their trials. Vividly picturesque descriptions bring Radcliffe’s characters & creatures to life for readers. Her descriptions are so vivid that I could actually smell the coffee her characters were drinking, to the extent that I had to go put a pot on for myself. The world that she has created is developed on so many levels that it feels very real to me. Readers get to know the various creatures, species, and godlings quite well. We are also introduced to their various customs and prejudices.I love how Radcliffe writes as if we already know her characters well, but continues to develop them, giving us just a little more detail with every event or encounter. The fact that Rysa never changes in the essential elements of who she is definitely warms my heart. Her attention issues remain a prominent part of who she is, yet at the same time she’s learning to manage them, to work within the bounds of what they present for her, rather than trying to make them go away. Ladon’s character becomes more and more complex throughout. Readers really get a sense of who he’s become through the millennia and what shaped him. Surrounded by their friends and family, who’s stories we also come to know, Radcliffe creates a cast that you can’t help but love.My final thoughts here? This novel embodies all that’s good about urban fantasy. Radcliffe brings her fantasy & supernatural creatures to life while leaving us firmly planted in the everyday. I could easily see this happening next door to me & I’d love to live it.Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

An amazing paranormal series just gets better By Lilly Once again Kris Austen Radcliffe takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride of love, pain, strength, brokenness, loss, joy, and grief. Book 5 in the Fate-Fire-Shifter-Dragon series picks up right on the heels of "Silent," the final novella in the Bonds-Broken-Silent trilogy that together make up Book 4. When we begin, Ladon and Dragon are excited, happy, and healthy; Rysa is happy to see THEM happy ... and choosing to ignore the twinges of concern from her seers. Although you know that danger and tension are coming -- otherwise how would we have a plot? -- that moment of "normal" is a nugget of pure joy. Over the course of the series we've grown to love these three, and to see them loving life together is like a snapshot of "this is what life should be like."Of course, from that moment to the climactic end of the book, you're white-knuckled and obsessed. Every step, every revelation, takes its inevitable course to the agonizing, unexpected twist of unimaginable separation. You might find yourself, like me, yelling "NOOOOO!" at your Kindle -- which I admit to doing more than once! I found myself unable to put the book down, until that final "Call me Nate." I took a deep breath, put down my reader, and went straight to Amazon to check the release date of Book 6!One of my favorite things about Radcliffe's writing is that she never lets the characters grow stale. We feel like we've won the battle alongside our heroine.I've lost track of the number of times I've re-read these books, either in part or in whole. Each time there's a new discovery, a new "a ha!" moment. Kris Austen Radcliffe is one of my few "If she wrote it, I'll buy it" authors. (As I go back and check, I can confidently say that yep, I own everything she's written. And I don't regret a single purchase.) If you haven't yet discovered the Fate-Fire-Shifter-Dragon universe, I beg you: right now, stop what you're doing and go buy Games of Fate: Fate Fire Shifter Dragon Book 1. Read it. Then read all the rest. When you get to "Call me Nate," I'll be here. Together we can wait impatiently for the release of Book 6! :)**Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**

I love that Rysa and Ladon cherish each other and are willing to go through these trials together and will take their commitment to the next level!Icing on the cake? Dragon wanting a pet! 24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Best book of series...so far By Cheryl Stout Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. - Winston ChurchillThis is the third book in the EXTINCTION CYCLE series, with at least four planned. Book one EXTINCTION HORIZON and book two EXTINCTION EDGE were two of my favorite post-apocalyptic books...ever. Now book three in the series EXTINCTION AGE is here and this is the best book so far. I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Reading Copy and I am a happy fan girl. I also bought a copy of the book for my collection - and to support this exceptional author.MSGT Reed Beckham and Dr. Kate Lovato are back, battling the Variants by any means possible, along with the other members of Team Ghost...and Fitz, the sharpshooter soldier who just happens to have blades for legs.Besides being killing machines, the Variants are evolving quickly into even smarter, deadlier foes against mankind. Operation Liberty, which failed overwhelmingly, was just an example of the animal cunning of these creatures. Now Kate is back in the lab trying to come up with another weapon to use against the Variants. If she fails, things are looking downright impossible for mankind.Author Smith has a deft touch with the rapid pacing of this series and this book really zooms along. He also has a talent for bringing his characters to life on the pages. Of course, that doesn't mean they're going to stay alive. His battle scenes end up looking like wedding scenes in A Game of Thrones. So be prepared for bloodshed, pathos, romance, and hope. This is a dark series but there are moments of hope, too.Book four EXTINCTION EVOLUTION is due out in Fall 2015.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. No, Seriously. Don't Go in There! By David W. Another fantastic novel by Smith. After reading the first 2 books in the series, I had no idea how the author could top them. Well, it is safe to say that this is the best book in the series thus far. Smith has ramped up the action, suspense, romance and even a little bit of humor to keep all of his fans and yes, even the newbies, happy. I love how the story line is easy to follow and every scenario is different from the previous. Yes, Beckham is consistently charged with taking his team into the thick of it in order to perform some impossible mission, but there is always a new outcome you don't see coming. With twists and turns, violence and gore and love and hate, there is plenty to like in this series. But will you be able to catch your breath? I'll leave it to you to find out. Can't wait to read Book 4: Extinction Evolution!!!!

26 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Another exceptional book by Nicholas Sansbury Smith By india51 Another exceptional book by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. If at all possible this is probably the best of the three books in the series. Nothing but fast paced action that is always moving the story forward, excellent characters, and more twists and turns then any story out there. Probably the strongest part of this book are the characters. Smith does a superb job in developing and maintaining strong characters that fill the pages. Heck even the dog is better developed than half the characters in the typical zombie story that are being published these days. Just overall a great story, and a great continuation of the Extinction Cycle. You won't go wrong picking up this book, just make sure you read the two previous books beforehand. Smith is also one of the few authors that allows each of his book its own conclusion, no cliffhangers. Super job from page one to the final page!!

Lies. Deceit. Denial. A ghost. Must be Wednesday morning.

RoseAngel Dobson - psychic quasi-extraordinaire - uses her telepathic powers to help people and pets at her humane society job. She’ll be the first to admit, though, she’s a masked superhero in this regard, keeping her true colors hidden behind a ringing phone. Helping people - alive or dead - is what she does, and by golly she does it well. So when a darkly mysterious caller with the sexiest voice on the planet calls - accompanied by a ghostly vision of a boy in need - RoseAngel knows she has to find out who this child is, and how to help save him. It has absolutely nothing to do with trying to learn more about the caller who makes her heart do the jitterbug. Nope. Nothing at all.

Travis Mattison is hiding his true identity, going under the alias Trevor Matthews, although the spunky redhead who bumps into him at the grocery store seems to know his real name. He is too close to finishing a three-year ordeal, suffering through a series of events that would put a lesser man in R-wing, and if Ms. Dobson knows who he really is, nothing in his world will be safe.

Including his life.

As the attraction between them grows, so does the risk. RoseAngel’s life gets upended, while Travis’s is endangered. All RoseAngel has to do to save their future is pinpoint Travis’s location on a map.

Too bad she was probably eating ice cream the day they handed out that ability.

This is a new release of a previously published edition.

By Mary Buckham There are days when you just want a story that is easy to read, makes you feel good and reassures you that all is right with the world. This is one of those books. Right from the beginning you want Travis and RoseAngel to find their Happy Ever After, but, like any good story, it's not easy or straight forward. There is enough external issues at play to keep them apart (mystery, suspense, hidden secrets) even as the sexual tension builds. Then there are the dogs and the cats. What's not to love in this story! I gobbled it up in one sitting. Enjoyed the thread of psychic abilities that added spice to the mystery/suspense plot and couldn't wait to flip the page and find out what was going to happen next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun and exciting By Lorraine Lander Callahan does a great job of keeping readers on the edge of their seats with this book. RoseAngel has psychic powers and while they help her do her job of taking calls at the humane society from troubled pet owners, they don't help her avoid falling for a mysterious stranger. When his problems become hers, RoseAngel must find a way to use her powers to save both of them. The heroine has a wry sense of humor that keeps the story fun in between having you on the edge of your seat. Pet lovers will also enjoy the dog and cat characters as well as the ways that RoseAngel helps them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this book By KS I enjoyed this book. It was "cute" and "light-hearted." I enjoyed some of the twists the author presented. I kind of wish it was longer and more developed. I enjoyed the main guy and probably would like the main girl more if there was more story to it.I was also interested in the other characters like their friends and siblings. I think this author does a good job in getting you interested into the characters and their stories. I just wish we could have heard these stories. Hopefully, we'll get to if the author decides to make a series of it.

I was glad to see Griffin get his HEA. I don't feel the same for either Holden or Dawn, so I hope the next story is about Blithe or Storm. These stories are best read in order to get the most out of them. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to the next one. Enjoy!

Filled with case studies demonstrating where investigations went wrong (and where they went right), you'll be equipped to apply best practices and avoid common mistakes. Start saving money, and get the right team in place with The Claim Game.

By Shawn Webb-Young I first read this novel about 6 months ago and have been increasingly drawn to write a review ever since:In a world both familiar and surreal, Way of the Serpent unfolds through compelling and unusual happenings that twist and turn within the lives of characters that inhabit generations, which have been turned inside out and upside down. In a word, Birdwell has produced a novel that is mesmerizing. With the detail of an ethnographer, she weaves a tale of intrigue, passion, betrayal, love, conflict, confusion, and longing. It is a world in which human association is being transformed and the players are in the midst of negotiating freshly emerging modes of love, connection, and subjectivity. The richly drawn characters pull us in and throw into relief similar patterns in our own lives, however more benign they might at first seem. In thought-provoking passages, we are compelled to examine our lives through the textured experiences of Jenda Swain, her family, lovers, and acquaintances as they navigate their daily lives in the year 2125, and the results are often unsettling.Birdwell creates a world that straddles an unknown space between the past and not-so-distant future in which uncertainty reigns supreme; confusion is the norm when one is not even sure to which generation she, and those around her, belong. Traditional reference points are fading and pieces of the cultural puzzles no longer seem to fit in any discernible configuration. The mere notion of nostalgia is increasingly meaningless. Disorienting in its complexity, Way of the Serpent explores identity in new and refreshing ways that expand our abilities to question and explore the meaning of life as we now know it by invoking our uncertain future.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. It is riveting, engaging, mysterious, suspenseful, and profoundly thought provoking. Most importantly, it is relevant - ethically and emotionally. It clings to the consciousness long after the final page is turned.

Burns I received a copy of this book from the author, this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review. In the interests of full disclosure, I’m acquainted with this author as she is a former professor of mine. This fact may indeed be influencing my opinions and the content of this review, however, if that is so, it would be to make me harsher than usual. Tough classes breed tough critics, and who has never wanted to be the one to critique their teacher’s works? So starts the beginning of what I am told is to be a series, the next one which may be coming out Spring 2016.So what happens when everyone can live for practically ever? In literature it is almost always a cautionary tale, because there simply must be a trade off of some sort. Somehow I feel that when we get to that point in our medical revolution we will race forwarded with no real thoughts to the outcomes, just as people in this world have done.Jenda Swain lives in a post-apocalyptic world, though few know that this is so, as the end of all they knew came gently and everything seemed for the good. The trade off for longevity and eternal health doesn’t seem so dire. Merely your memories, but that isn’t so bad, because technology once more evolved to rescue them. Imagine if Facedbook was where you went to store all your memories, imagine then that with all this power, government and governance was a mere shadow and corporations are the real power. That last part doesn’t seem so far fetched at the moment, to be honest. But this is the world Jenda lives and works in. She is a cog in the machine of exomemories, until that chance encounter mentioned in the blurb sends her spiraling off her pre-planned and narrowly defined life.So what did I think of this book? It was very interesting. I enjoyed the wheels within wheels conspiracies and the intricate ways different plot threads were woven together to form a rich albeit care worn and oft mended tapestry. And Jenda’s emotional turmoil at discovering the lie that is her life, that was believable and engaging, as was her relationship with Luis. What I struggled with was how the story was told, with much telling and less showing, and much of that in Jenda’s head, and she seemed so removed from many of the events. This puts the reader at a slight remove, watching the events of the story unfold instead of feeling immersive. But the way the author blended components of a morality play with a mystery and a thriller was all but riveting. The sum of the whole was greater than its parts, much like human memory, so while the way the story was written may have not have been to my preferences, the story itself absolutely was and was what kept me racing through it.In retrospect, I suspect the stylistic choices were purposeful and were likely a mirror and commentary on the events of the story itself. It just wasn’t, as I said, my preference. But that ending though was amazing and emotional. I almost wish I had waited to read this until the sequel comes out early 2016 so that I can binge read and find out what happens next.Fortunately dear readers, I did not and am able to tell you about it while this book is currently on sale for the holidays so check it out.

A Spot-on SciFi classic in the vein of Asimov or Bradbury By Anthony (Tony) Burnett Though this is a beautifully written and complex novel, I was most impressed with Birdwell's spot on interpretation of society in the near future. Yes, this is science fiction in that it incorporates a yet to be discovered scientific principal, the end of aging. This novel is so much more. It's a social statement, a political statement, a romance novel, and an action-adventure. That description only begins to skim the surface.I don't see this as a post- apocalyptic work. This is society progressing through a natural order, except that people don't die. There is a trade-off. Interestingly Birdwell leaves it to the reader to decide if the trade-off is worth it or not.The narrative is both beautiful and chilling. The characters are well developed, people you would want to share coffee or maybe even a weekend with. They're human at their most flawed and compassionate selves.I don't want to give too much away but regardless of your general genre preference this is a must-read. It works as a standalone but the good news is there's a sequel and it's here.
