All But Human (Fate Fire Shifter Dragon) (Volume 5), by Kris Austen Radcliffe

Review One of my favorite things about Radcliffe's writing is that she never lets the characters grow stale. Although they remain consistent, there is always growth, always new discoveries -- both in themselves and in our knowledge of them. Rysa, Ladon, Derek, AnnaBelinda, Gavin, Daisy, even Brother- and Sister-Dragon ... they are constantly learning more about themselves, constantly growing, and yet remaining true to who they are. They long ago stopped being "characters" and simply became real. I also continue to be impressed with the way Radcliffe has us learning about this world through Rysa's eyes, through her ADHD and her attention issues. It may feel fractured as we read, but that moment when Rysa finally understands -- and as Rysa, so do we -- is such a triumph! We feel like we've won the battle alongside our heroine. -- ★★★★★ Amazon Reviewer

From the Author Q: Rysa Torres, the main character of the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series, has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). What inspired you to write such an unlikely heroine?A: I wrote GAMES OF FATE for my daughter, a real young woman with real ADHD. The FFSD universe may be Urban Fantasy/ Science Fiction, but Rysa's anxiety, her hyperactivity, and her fractured and flitting way of seeing the world are all true to life -- and not attributes of someone you'd expect to save the world.A girl with ADHD can be a hero, too. She may not start out plucky, and may have farther to go in her journey, but don't discount the passion and creativity of someone with ADHD. She can save the world, and in the FFSD universe, she does.Q: How did you decide to include American Sign Language in the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon universe?A: I have a limited understanding of ASL; a family member who is not deaf but is nonverbal uses ASL. It was because of this family member that I realized the nonverbal dragons could also use ASL as a way to communicate. Q: Which Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon titles are FREE when I subscribe to Kris Austen Radcliffe's newsletter?A: GAMES OF FATE (book 1), CONPULSIO (an FFSD novella), and BONDS (book 4.1). Paste the following URL into your browser: tinyurl.com/krisaustenradcliffeQ: How many books are in the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series, and what is their order?A: GAMES OF FATE, FLUX OF SKIN and FIFTH OF BLOOD (books 1-3) make up ACTIVATION: THE COMPLETE FIRST TRILOGY. These three novels are tightly tied together and each picks up on the heels of the previous book. It's best to read them in order.Together, the novellas BONDS, BROKEN and SILENT make up book 4. This miniseries introduces Daisy Pavlovich and Gavin Bower (Rysa's friend who appears briefly at the beginning of GAMES OF FATE) into the FFSD universe.ALL BUT HUMAN and MEN AND BEASTS (books 4 and 5) make up the REDEMPTION DUOLOGY, and like the novels of ACTIVATION, are tightly tied together; and again, it's best to read them in order.Readers may start with either Rysa's story (GAMES OF FATE) or Daisy's story (BONDS). It is best, though, to be caught up with both heroines before starting book 5, ALL BUT HUMAN, where Rysa's and Daisy's paths converge. Also part of the FFSD series: CONPULSIO (a Roman Era novella), plus the short stories "Pop Rocks", "Cinder to Dust", and "Dmitri and the Mad Monk".The series, in order:(1) Games of Fate(2) Flux of Skin(3) Fifth of Blood(plus Conpulsio, Pop Rocks, and Cinder to Dust)(4.1) Bonds(4.2) Broken(4.3) Silent(5) All But Human(6) Men and Beasts(7) The Burning World (coming soon)Box sets:(1) Activation (2) Bonds Broken & Silent(3) Redemption (coming soon)Q:What genre is the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series?A: FFSD is a New Adult Urban Fantasy Romance story within a Science Fiction universe. Dragons, Fates, Shifters, ghouls called Burners, immortal warriors, Roman emperors--they're all here, along with a smattering of nanobots and, well, new tech.

The fast paced story combines intimate relationships with suspenseful events in a way that kept me on my toes. The well-crafted plot had so many twists and turns that I never knew what would happen next, yet couldn’t help but try and guess. Radcliffe writes with a raw & snarky tone that sets the scene for her characters and their trials. Vividly picturesque descriptions bring Radcliffe’s characters & creatures to life for readers. Her descriptions are so vivid that I could actually smell the coffee her characters were drinking, to the extent that I had to go put a pot on for myself. The world that she has created is developed on so many levels that it feels very real to me. Readers get to know the various creatures, species, and godlings quite well. We are also introduced to their various customs and prejudices.I love how Radcliffe writes as if we already know her characters well, but continues to develop them, giving us just a little more detail with every event or encounter. The fact that Rysa never changes in the essential elements of who she is definitely warms my heart. Her attention issues remain a prominent part of who she is, yet at the same time she’s learning to manage them, to work within the bounds of what they present for her, rather than trying to make them go away. Ladon’s character becomes more and more complex throughout. Readers really get a sense of who he’s become through the millennia and what shaped him. Surrounded by their friends and family, who’s stories we also come to know, Radcliffe creates a cast that you can’t help but love.My final thoughts here? This novel embodies all that’s good about urban fantasy. Radcliffe brings her fantasy & supernatural creatures to life while leaving us firmly planted in the everyday. I could easily see this happening next door to me & I’d love to live it.Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

An amazing paranormal series just gets better By Lilly Once again Kris Austen Radcliffe takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride of love, pain, strength, brokenness, loss, joy, and grief. Book 5 in the Fate-Fire-Shifter-Dragon series picks up right on the heels of "Silent," the final novella in the Bonds-Broken-Silent trilogy that together make up Book 4. When we begin, Ladon and Dragon are excited, happy, and healthy; Rysa is happy to see THEM happy ... and choosing to ignore the twinges of concern from her seers. Although you know that danger and tension are coming -- otherwise how would we have a plot? -- that moment of "normal" is a nugget of pure joy. Over the course of the series we've grown to love these three, and to see them loving life together is like a snapshot of "this is what life should be like."Of course, from that moment to the climactic end of the book, you're white-knuckled and obsessed. Every step, every revelation, takes its inevitable course to the agonizing, unexpected twist of unimaginable separation. You might find yourself, like me, yelling "NOOOOO!" at your Kindle -- which I admit to doing more than once! I found myself unable to put the book down, until that final "Call me Nate." I took a deep breath, put down my reader, and went straight to Amazon to check the release date of Book 6!One of my favorite things about Radcliffe's writing is that she never lets the characters grow stale. We feel like we've won the battle alongside our heroine.I've lost track of the number of times I've re-read these books, either in part or in whole. Each time there's a new discovery, a new "a ha!" moment. Kris Austen Radcliffe is one of my few "If she wrote it, I'll buy it" authors. (As I go back and check, I can confidently say that yep, I own everything she's written. And I don't regret a single purchase.) If you haven't yet discovered the Fate-Fire-Shifter-Dragon universe, I beg you: right now, stop what you're doing and go buy Games of Fate: Fate Fire Shifter Dragon Book 1. Read it. Then read all the rest. When you get to "Call me Nate," I'll be here. Together we can wait impatiently for the release of Book 6! :)**Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
