"This is the basic law of persuasion ""PEOPLE ARE MORE INTERESTED IN THEMSELVES THAN THEY ARE IN YOU!"" Other people are enticed by your complete attention to them. In normal conversation when people are supposed to be listening they are usually thinking about what they are going to say next. Instead, you should be concentrating on what the person is trying to do. Are they telling you they are feeling unsure of themselves? Are they trying to give their ego a boost? Are they telling you someone else does not understand them? The specific words are not nearly as important as what they are trying to do. Listen to what they are doing. You can expect certain types of people to behave in certain ways. Even before they open their mouth you may have a clue from their body type and dress."

Frederick Crouter shows the importance of empathy when it comes to persuasion and motivation By Cyrus Webb Whether it's in our personal or professional lives we have all been in situations where we want to either get someone to see things our way or motivate them to an action that we want. In HOW TO PERSUADE AND MOTIVATE PEOPLE author Frederick Crouter shows the importance of knowing your audience and being able to reach them where they are. This really means that you have to make it less about you and more about the other person or persons. What type of personality do they have? What seems to be of interest to them? These questions are important to answer because they will help you in proceeding with reaching them and then guiding them. Frederick gives examples of how you can help change attitudes and moods simply by reaching the person at their emotional level and then guiding them in rising with you.The book also gives tips about how you can use previous experiences with the person to get them to think about things that you want them to do or participate in, like going to the movies. It all begins with reaching them where they are and then guiding them in the direction you want them to go.Small in size but definitely weighty in information, HOW TO PERSUADE AND MOTIVATE PEOPLE shares some important tips that anyone can apply.

She is one of my new favorite witch character. Not too many are well developed or just don't act the right age. But Emerson was written just right and I loved it.Anyway......Emerson is an ordinary teen girl. She is about to turn seventeen and that usually means a party, going on dates, having a nice car and just enjoying life. Well, Emerson gets something extra special. She becomes part of a coven! That's normal right?Well Caiden tells her that she is a witch. So all these crazy things aren't her going crazy or some kin of dream. Now her life will change and things are going to be a little bit different than she thought. The story picks up quick an keeps your attention and even surprise you to keep you wanting to get through andknow what happens. I really liked this book and hope to read more from the author.

I am just mind blown, this author has created a interesting world full of witches, werewolves, and gods/goddesses (oh my!). From the start the author already has your emotions going for Emerson when her day is just going to s***s. But its not just the main character that your emotions run high for, oh no. She is so good she has you feeling bad for characters you want to hate but can't when you learn of their back story or they do something very sweet. OH how frustrating it is, but it is a good kind of frustration it keeps you reading ;).Emerson has just turned seventeen and is about to have her world turned upside down with in a week, some wold say she possibly spoiled and singled minded but I say she is just a girl looking for answers and trying to understand and grasp this new world that she is thrown in too. Yeah some of her choices were not the smart ones but who has ever heard of a teenager that is not compulsive, most of the time teenagers are know it alls and compulsive. Even Caiden has a short moment of recklessness, though I really do not blame him lol I would go stupid over a new car even if it is not mine too. Oh by the way Caiden is the guy that you'll be in the background screaming TEAM CAIDEN!!! haha. He will help Emerson navigate this new world, or at least its new to her, and give her the tools that she needs to keep her new witchy powers under control. Lord knows that she is going to need, what ever you do, DO NOT make that girl mad!!!This beautiful crafted world is filled with mystery that will have you bubbling with questions and theories on the way and leave you with a cliff hanger that has you begging for the next book. It is defiantly worth buying and I suggest you do or you may possibly be missing out on an awesome urban fantasy adventure, but you will never know if you do not read ;) it is up to you. I was lucky to be contacted by the author who was so nice to give me a complimentary copy of this book in return that I give an honest review. I want to give a HUGE thanks to her for this opportunity to read her work. I absolutely LOVED this book and it will be one that I will return to and reread. I cant wait for the next book, Deceitful Circle, and the rest of the series. :)

I get inducted into a freaky coven of witches. The first sentence of the book describes the story perfectly. First in this series the scene is set, and the characters are truly believable for the setting. There was enough mystery to attract my interest and Emerson, the heroine and trainee witch, had the usual angst of a seventeen year old. What she really needs is to find out why her mother committed suicide. Or did she?Sebastian, her boyfriend shows jealousy but something about him doesn’t seem quite right. Is he hiding his true self? I believe I solved this by the end of the book, but won’t give my solution here as it would be a spoiler.Caiden, the witch trainer, is the cause of Sebastian’s jealousy and Emerson feels her boyfriend’s being unreasonable. Caiden could be a love interest, but Emerson has too much going on in her life to concentrate on anyone but Sebastian. So why do I only give this a 4.5 rating? This is due to the missing words in the text and incorrect grammar throughout the book. If this could be sorted out with a good editing I wouldn’t hesitate to give it a five.Well done Ms Larsen, I look forward to reading the second book which you gave a preview of at the end of this one.originally posted at long and short reviews

A New York Times BestsellerSince his arrival at The Daily Show, Jon Stewart has become one of the major players in comedy as well as one of the most significant liberal voices in the media. In Angry Optimist, Lisa Rogak follows his unlikely rise to stardom, from his early days growing up in New Jersey, through his years as a struggling stand-up comic in New York, and on to the short-lived but acclaimed The Jon Stewart Show, before at last landing a job as host of a half-hour comedy show that at the time was still finding its footing amidst roiling internal drama.

Once there, Stewart transformed The Daily Show into one of the most influential news programs on television today. Drawing on interviews with current and former colleagues and with new material on his departure from The Daily Show, Angry Optimist reveals how Jon Stewart has come to wield incredible power in American politics and changed how the news is reported along the way.

Review

“Including both humorous and serious insights from colleagues, Rogak presents a detailed picture of the Comedy Central show, revealing exhausting writing schedules, dogs in the office, interns running around at top speed and people who aren't particularly enamored with the host. … An inside look at the man who changed the face of comedy talk shows.” ―Shelf Awareness

“Lots of laughs as well as some surprising pieces of information.” ―Examiner.com

“Sheds an expansive light on the vertically challenged, humorous young boy from not-so-humble New Jersey beginnings, and the strides and stumbles he weathered on his journey to becoming a multi-faceted man of media.” ―Cleveland Plain Dealer

Understanding Stewart By Matthew Ries The life and times of Jon Stewart are more than the last fifteen years of helming The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as author Lisa Rogak writes. The unlikely rise of the short wise-cracking Jewish kid from Jersey rising to become one of the most influential, and comedic, voices of political commentary is a told expertly and without bias.Given Stewart’s impact the last fifteen years, Rogak could have easily just given a brief synopsis of his life prior to January 1999 instead she spent the a third of the book detailing Stewart’s childhood, collegiate years, and life before and after deciding to go into comedy. Rogak gives the reader as glimpse to Stewart as a young man that will affect how he helmed The Daily Show, including the triumphs and the many failures that he experienced throughout the 1980s and 90s.Once Rogak gets to Stewart’s tenure on The Daily Show, instead of just detailing the next decade and a half, she shows how Stewart made the show more in his style and how he was hands on than previous host Craig Kilborn. Throughout the last two-thirds of the book, Rogak tackles The Daily Show years not strictly chronologically but as a mixture of chronology and themes. This approached allowed Rogak to give the reader a fuller understand of Stewart and The Daily Show as a whole.Rogak was very evenhanded in her approach to the overall view of Stewart, mixing praise and criticism from critics and how the viewing audience has seen Stewart. Triumphs and embarrassments are told in their detail as well has controversies surrounding the show from his interview style, to the lack of female writers, and his liberal bias. And as Stewart seems on the verge of a major shakeup in his professional life, Rogak writes about his possible transition to films as director not actor.Given Jon Stewart’s continued presence within media, Lisa Rogak did an wonderful job in writing about his life and career. Although it is hard for an author not to have some bias for their subject, Rogak is able to give a balanced portrayal of Stewart in her book from accomplishments to stumbles. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the host of The Daily Show.I received a free copy of this book via Goodreads First Reads.

Facts, no heart, fairly boring. No, not fairly boring; really boring. It stayed that way for far too long. It became more interesting once Jon Stewart became host of The Daily Show. At that point, there was more about the person, his personality, his interactions with people, some anecdotes sprinkled in.I knew very little of Mr. Stewart although I usually enjoy The Daily Show. I still feel like I don't know very much. He can be contradictory, he can be stubborn, he has a temper. He has a soft spot in his heart for pit bulls, and he has three rescued dogs, my favorite factoid. He is a devoted husband and father. He is 5'7". Yes, there is more than that, but it all felt fairly superficial.I listened to an unabridged audio version narrated by Cassandra Campbell, and her reading did not add to the story. It did, for me, detract.Although now I know a little more about Mr. Stewart, this biography was ultimately unsatisfying.

By Samana Siddiqui Jon Stewart may be easily dismissed by older Americans for his "fake news show" The Daily Show, but among younger Americans, his influence is unmatched. One statistic from Angry Optimist makes that clear: "According to Advertising Age, the median age of the average Daily Show viewer for the third quarter of 2004 was 35.7; in comparison, the median age for news shows on the three major networks was a whopping 60-plus. The age of the average O'Reilly viewer was pegged at 58" (p. 160). Stewart is clearly filling a need and a niche for political satire among young Americans who prefer their news delivered with laughs. This is why understanding Stewart's background, how he developed his talent, and his worldview are key to gaining insight into this critical phenomenon in American political culture. The strength of Angry Optimist lies largely in its early chapters, detailing Stewart's life as a middle class, Jewish-American who lived a comfortable lifestyle in an affluent suburb, but, like most minorities in the United States, was ridiculed and excluded. Whether it was a passing comment from a WASP classmate, or anti-Semitic barbs he endured on the field playing soccer in college, humor became Stewart's way of handling his detractors. It was also how he dealt with the pain of his family's break up at age 10, when his father left his mother. The financial struggles Stewart, his mother, and brother endured as a result marked him deeply.Further on, though, the book becomes paragraphs and paragraphs of quotes minus deeper insight into his character and motivations. While it presents the basic information required of a biography, along with some heartwarming anecdotes (e.g. how he proposed to his wife), Angry Optimist became a dry read along the way.One additional plus of the book is understanding a day in the life of the Daily Show. In other words, how each episode is put together, which is surprisingly very much like a "real" newsroom.Angry Optimist presents an informative view of one of America's most prominent political satirists today, someone who has, and will no doubt have, considerable influence on younger U.S. voters. While weak in presentation in some parts, it offers a detailed enough look at his past, present, and possible future..

War has finally come to Hades and the Death Gates System. For Maiha Mana Nakatoma war is nothing new. Not for the girl who was, until just recently, 97 year old James J. Owens one of the 7 First High Lords of the Death Dealers. War and the suffering it brings is familiar territory. The High Families of Light, Daniels, and Moore have issued death threats against Maiha and her family. They have sent assassins to kill Maiha and her family in their sleep. These Houses have used spies, bribery, and coercion to infiltrate the House Nakatoma military. They have gone out of their way to bring down this once great House. After the brazen attack on Maiha’s family in broad daylight Maiha has brought down the full weight of the Empire to handle these rebels. But will 4 divisions of Death Dealers be enough to handle the rebellion or will she need even more military forces? Forces that she has no idea of where to get. Can Maiha truly face off against the military might of 7 of the Greatest High Families Houses? A military force that will outnumber her own by a factor of 7 to 1. The odds are not in House Nakatoma’s favor. But all of this is overshadowed by something her sister Fuyuko has been hiding from her. A secret so terrible that it takes everything in Maiha’s power to keep control. A secret that could very well send her own House Military on a revenge inspired killing spree. This is a problem that Maiha must face and deal with before it gets out and she loses control of her House Military. While the Emperor has dispatched his Hunters to bring the other members of the rebel Houses to justice. Maiha has been given an Imperial order to stop the rebellion on Hades. A rebellion that can have Empire wide consequences. This rebellion threatens the very foundations of the Empire. Will Maiha have the time to train her family in the use of their new abilities as Second Generation Death Dealers or will Houses Light, Moor, and Daniels force her hand? Already the three Houses are moving to stop her and her forces. The three Houses have gathered more than just their own Military Forces to attack the Nakatoma’s. To add to Maiha’s problems there is the upcoming marriage of her adopted mother the Lady Dai Etsu. Her growing feelings for a certain APS Pilot Sargent Alice Ann Wendell and her growing confusion over her own sexuality. Will the now young again James Owens find love again once more in this new life? Will she forget about her first true love Matsu Nakatoma Owens or will the new young lady move on with her life? How will the fiery hellion face all these new challenges? One thing is for certain she won’t run away and hide. No that is not the way James Owens would handle a problem, and despite the behavioral program that drives so much of her life now, Maiha doesn’t run either. Maiha maybe the only successful secondary configuration in the history of the Death Dealers, but she is still at the very core of her being a Death Dealer. On over a thousand worlds, across countless battlefields their battle cry has been heard. These are men who do not back down and do not retreat. At the back of her mind Maiha hears this cry sounding over and over “By our hands death is dealt”. For the most feared of Death Dealers the man they called Death, there can be only one solution. Victory or death. However that man is no longer among the living. He and his legend has been laid to rest in the Nakatoma Family Shrine. Maiha, maybe the Head of House for her family, but she still looks like an innocent teenage girl. Can Maiha live up to the legend that is already starting to form around her? Can she show the Universe that Maiha Nakatoma is ‘Deaths Own Daughter’?

By Amazon Customer This author has captured the interpersonal communication and plot flow that Robert Heinlein at his peak (Moon is a harsh Mistress through Time enough for Love) better than anyone I have ever read.Since to me Heinlein was one of the best at this, it is no small feat.I have read a ton of reviews of books that have story arc's comparable to “Space Cadet” or “Starship Troopers” that have proclaimed “The new Heinlein”, and none of them have measured up, even if the book is better as a straight story saying a book like Space cadet(written in 1949 for preteens to inspire them to go into aerospace) or Starship Troopers(written as a alternate fix for broken democracy where people with no risk or responsibility ends up sending others off to die) is comparable is silly.Especially when they don't have the plot and communication flow of the later books that made them so good. The writing is like Heinleins and it is huge on personal responsibility like Heinleins, but the story(other than some plot lines which might be shout outs or just the result of Heinlein making concepts that inspired so much later sci-fi) is different in style with almost every anime trope out there, lots of historical Japanese culture, and tons of easter eggs of references to popular tv shows. Those personally aren't a problem to me, it's just a much more modern and younger style than existed back then. The down side is there are a lot of word substitution errors, and some word missing and punctuation errors. To me this is tiny in comparison to finding someone who actually is so enjoyable to read.If the author can point me to a way to clearly send back word substitutions I could send her a fix for at least 80-90% of them within a few days.I am making this five stars because finding someone this good is huge, and word corrections are something that can be done if the author gets the right positive feedback to do it.(although I am sure Amazon makes updates limited or costly).Note: This is written for the first three books which were released at the same time, which is good because since it really isn't written so the individual books have in my opinion a natural sub story arc at the cut points.

In the tradition of Mech Warrior the growth of the hose is great. The use of mechanical warriors and armament along with the imitations is excellent. Reminds me of many hours of game play. The fact I remember the none computer game, and the households . Makes this series even more enjoyable . I always enjoyed role playing as part of real gaming, we are talking 1980's. The author has bought back those found memories. Along with a story that would make a fine game.

But I must say that the editing is horrible, and the logic holes are crazy. The first 3 books happen in about 2 weeks. It's just silly how fast some of the things happen.I have to add again since this says it has 3 editors. Fire them all, then edit it 5 more times, then proofread it 10.

The Sicklands are burning. Coffin Squad, a mix of GenWrecks and GenSOF operators, races from GenWreck base to GenWreck base, only to find death and destruction. The abominations of the Sicklands -the cooties- have systematically destroyed everything they have come across, all in the name of an entity that no one can find- the Other. Now Coffin Squad, with the help of some unlikely allies, must leave the Sicklands and dive back into the Clean Nation stronghold of Caldicott City in a desperate attempt to keep GenSOF Command intact. Mysteries greet them, hordes of diseased citizens attack them, and one person shatters their perception of what it means to live in a world post-antibiotics. And it all leads back to the Other and the place where everything started- Control.

By John P McCrory This book was just okay for me. Due to part two coming out so long after I read the first one it took me a good 100 pages to get up to speed with this one. That is one thing I hate about these books that are series. I read so much I am pretty lost when the next one comes out. Overall this is an okay book and would recommend it to my friends. I do know I love all the rest of his book and have purchased every book by this author.

The only thing I am sad about is that this is possibly the last entry in this series. I just love the concept and thing that it is very realistic, expect for what happens to Blaze of course. But a great read none the less.

Image how life so small, yet out numbers man kind could destroy and create something that could remove the human cancer from the planet.

A Diversity of Wisdom in a Small Space By SRD Management books are everywhere these days, but this small and relatively short volume packs a lot of critical insight--largely because of the wide range of experienced professionals who have contributed to this work. My personal favorite is Ron Hodge's "EQ Trumps IQ" because it really focuses on the qualities of a true leader, and of the need to value people above all else--a critical message in a corporate world increasingly driven by up-to-the minute profitability numbers rather than the long haul of creating and nurturing a solid team that will truly deliver enduring results.

Know-How: Experience, Expertise, Execution - Highly Recommended By Daniel J DeWitt This book is recommended reading for graduate business students and business people early in their careers. I enjoyed learning the ideas and stories that developed from each executive's personal business experience. This highly-readable book will help people avoid mistakes and be more effective as their career's evolve.

Mordell This a fantastic book for anyone curious about improving their impact among organizations and for themselves. The book is organized into easily readable chapters/articles grouped into three topics: Being the Best, Creating the Most Value and Unleashing Potential. Each article is written by a different author. They are real world leaders sharing their experience concisely and are not people trying to sell you on any idea. At the end of each article, the author also shares their suggestions for further reading to the topic. Great insights there alone. While every article won't be a hit with each reader, I am certain there is good value in here for anyone seeking to be better at their leadership craft. I will be sharing this book widely.
