"Medicine is a soft science with guiding rules rather than hard and fast laws". In this Instaread summary (think DETAILED and interesting review) you may be surprised to read the name Hermione Granger, a character in the Harry Potter series listed as one of the important people in this book! Johannes Kepler, a German mathematician from the 16th century is also mentioned. There are 6 Key Takeaways stated and discussed in this summary. Here are a couple to whet your appetite:>> #2 - "Modern medicine only dates back to the 1940's. Before them, the choices were amputations, and the "three P's - placebo, palliation, and plumbing." ">> #5 - "Regular cases create a working set of rules but the outliers prove the laws."The author's style is described as clear and suitable for both the medical professional and lay reader. This is a short, interesting read for those who do not have the time to read the original but want to know what the book is about. Please note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread review and NOT the original book. Product provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

Medicine as more art than science By Ivy Reisner This book does a great job summarizing the original work, while bringing in some outside data (such as an article pertaining to how bias affects drug trials) all of which are cited in the back for further reading. In the main, the point being explored is that in some ways medicine is as much art as science. The points it explores are:1- Doctors often work with limited information.2- Modern medicine was born in the 1940s, with the advent of observation and categorization of disease.3- Intuition and observation trump tests that can vary in their accuracy. I found this the most interesting section of the analysis as it goes into specifics on fail cases.4- Bayes' theorem states all knowledge is conditional.5- Edge cases prove especially useful for research.6- Bias, self-selection in study groups, and unavoidable secondary selection criteria impacts the validity of medical studies, and must be accounted for.I would have liked a little more detail. This one was good, but felt slightly more rushed than most of the Instareads titles. I'm not certain I agree with all of the points made. I would argue computer science is younger than medical science in opposition to the book's claims, and that the 1940s seems late for the birth of medicine as, for example, Edward Jenner was working on inoculations in the 17th and 18th centuries, but those are points I would dispute with the original source. This digest reports them faithfully and that is the task of a digest.I was given a sample in exchange for review.

Ray If you’ve ever paid close attention during your sessions with your doctor, you already know that much of what medical professionals do is based upon informed guesswork and intuition. Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review of Siddhartha Mukerjee’s The Laws of Medicine by Instaread summarizes an excellent book about the soft science of medicine, based on the author’s long experience as a doctor. The key takeaway from this book, clearly highlighted in this review, is that knowledge is not absolute, but conditional, and that medicine is not a science based upon hard and fast rules, but one that is shaped by commonsense guidelines based upon experience. After reading this review, you’re likely to be a bit uncomfortable the next time you get advice from your doctor, but even that is conditional knowledge that must be validated by experience.Whether the review makes you want to invest in the book itself is beside the point. The insight you’ll gain from this summary is well worth the 15 minutes it’ll take you to read it.

By Wilbur S I had always been aware of the utility of videos in creating a positive interpretation of a product or service from my own experiences watching them. Now that I'm involved with a startup of my own, I have to think about how to actually execute on a quality video marketing approach without expensively spinning my wheels with experimentation and uneducated forays. I appreciate the structure this book brings for me to get on track with video for getting my company out there.

By Lisa Bresnahan This book is packed full of examples, questions, and “how tos” for both leaders and teams to build stronger and more effective skill sets that will help improve individual , team, and organization performance. I loved the stories shared from many different types of organizations, and how they all achieved high levels of improvement and success within their organizations and business sectors – INSPIRING! The key points and questions at the end of each chapter were extremely helpful to me in both summarizing this powerful content, and also in sharing with my team as we are reading the book as part of our monthly department book club. I have had many AHA moments myself when reading and applying these achievable characteristics, and am excited to see the difference it is already making in our organization’s culture. This is a book that is not meant to be kept on the bookshelf, but kept close by and referenced often by anyone who wants to develop a more collaborative and effective team, as well as improving and sustaining their own skills and results!

First published in 1970, original blurb:

‘Alienation’ is the catchword of our time. It has been applied to everything from the new politics to the anti-heroes of today’s films. But what does it mean to say that someone is alienated? Is alienation a state of mind, or a relationship? If modern man is indeed alienated, is it from his work, his government, his society, or himself – or from all of these?

Richard Schacht, in this intelligent analysis, gets to the root of these questions. Examining the concept of alienation in the works of Hegel and Marx, he gives a clear account of the origins of the modern usage of the term. Among the many insights to be gained from this analysis is a clear understanding of Hegel’s influence on Marx in this most crucial area. Mr Schacht goes on to discuss the concept of alienation in recent philosophical and sociological literature, particularly in the writings of Erich Fromm. Here he finds a great deal of confusion, which has resulted in a series of almost universally unquestioned misconceptions.

This, then, is a book for all of us who use – and mis-use – the term ‘alienation’, and who are interested in the concepts it brings to mind. The arguments of Professor Walter Kaufmann’s introductory essay provide a useful background for Mr Schacht’s analysis. In this essay, Professor Kaufmann states that ‘henceforth nobody should write about alienation without first reading Schacht’s book.’

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. thinking up losses of intimacy By as baby Babylons do SKITS This book is the result of a dissertation topic suggested by Walter Kaufmann. Richard Schacht was to examine the key uses of the terms in major European languages going back to the original Latin usage. The introduction by Walter Kaufmann covers how estrangement has been a common theme for profound thinkers. Karl Marx read some Greek tragedies each year to provide himself with some perspective on how hostile life can be. If society functions best as a popularity contest, those who become hostile to times in which they do not possess the key to popularity may become self-destructive by provoking some opposition from the tricks used to dominate. Alienation was used in legal matters to describe transfers of ownership, and the lack of a feedback loop to keep everybody informed of how ownership of money that has already been spent can become the primary future of a financial system flies far from the tree of smoke in which most people demonstrate their own stupidity on such matters.Extending the discussion to Existential Philosophy and Theology with an addendum on philosophical anthropology includes a child playing with "the feeling of one's activity as one's own." (p. 233). That is all my thinking will ever be to people who want scholars to have fields in which they can dominate thinking in the future better than a financial system which has bets on a bobsled going down clear through to China.

Lots of Fun for Fans of the Greater Demon Universe By Dave Phipps This takes place in the Keeley / Zack / Eve universe (greater demons, vampires, shifters, adelede, etc.). Tyler is human, or at least that's what he thinks. He has to navigate a world he isn't prepared for, but manages to surprise everyone, including himself. This is a fun story. Lot's of twists and turns, lot's of character development, and a great deal of interaction with several people we have met in other books. That interaction is what really made me enjoy the book. We get to see other sides of the characters we've met previously, and see them through the eyes of someone else. There is a bit of sex, but nothing too graphic. I would recommend a slightly older audience, but mid-teen and older should be fine.If you like the other Keeley / Zack / Eve books, you'll love this series. If you like any other P.S. Power books, start with Demon Girl (Keeley Book 1) and work through that series. I highly recommend it.

Despite his certainty that he is going to die, he manages to survive by a combination of luck, some rudimentary martial arts training, and the onset of dawn which weakens and eventually stuns the gang.Of course, this really isn't the whole explanation. During the course of the story we encounter Kelsey, Zack, Eve, and most of the other characters in the story arc. If you enjoyed the earlier stories you will enjoy these as well.As a self-published author PS Power has the freedom to break most of the rules. After writing a sub-series "Other Places" he had the chutzpah to re-write and publish it as "Alternate Places" set in an alternate reality. Both series are good and worth reading, but I cannot imagine a publishing company allowing this to happen. He experiments with multiple different genres and styles of writing as well - mysteries, romance, etc. Many of his protagonists are 'over-powered' which is a stylistic mortal sin for traditional books. Increasingly more authors are successfully 'sinning' in this way. Notable examples are John Conroe, Laurence Dahners, and Glenn Bullion. As part of his wildly creative style he will sometimes deal with some philosophical point of views that are off-putting. The first book contains an anti-feminist plot element that is jarring. His vampires, shifters, and Aledes seem real enough, but the radical feminist characters seem so unreal as to break immersion. I recommend skipping through this part and getting back to the main story, which is quite good.

"trilogy", though we'll see more of him and the rest of the "KeeleyVerse" in the future.Tyler's nature becomes fully known, and he begins working on how to become less dependent on "his mother".His discoveries include "life energy" & "death energy" -- something like lightening would probably fall into an "energy energy" category!I added "points" for a reasonably good conclusion, though I detracted a few from Tyler's far too rapid a growth. He goes from barely being able to animate himself into fully controlling "death energy" within a few pages...Written in 'Power's typical "mind-dump stream-of-thought" manner in a linear, first-person POV, the story has the common typos & occasionally mis-aligned sentence structure that we've come to expect.Entertaining, for those that enjoy this type of writing...

The History of the Psychoanalytic Movement is a work published by Sigmund Freud in 1914. It is intended primarily as a polemic against the competing theories in psychotherapy which opposed his psychoanalysis, for example Alfred Adler's individual psychology and Carl Jung's analytical psychology. Adler and Jung had previously been followers of Freud but objected to his emphasis on sexual matters. His main criticism of them is their insistence on still calling themselves psychoanalysts.

By Norland Tellez Freud needs no praise since history has already secured a place for him in the light of investigators who searched truth and not ideologies, as in the case of Adler and Jung.
