Orphans cried out, and the world trembled. In the Northern Kingdoms, the chemical Fye can be found in the very air the citizens breathe. Those born with the ability to utilize this potent power dominated the world, and established an Empire that weathered more than fifty generations of turmoil. Vince, a Wolf gang scout, had no lofty dreams, no ambition save for passing his 10th birthday with food on the table. Unfortunately, for the Lowborn, even such simple goals come at a price. But when pushed past their breaking point, they would teach this world a lesson: There is no force more dangerous, than someone with nothing to lose. It's been five years since the rebellion of Zone S1 ended with a massacre. And unbeknownst to the powers that controlled this world, the real war is about to begin...

Review "A very fine beginning to an exciting new fantasy series. This is the kind of book that you hope finds an audience.Zhu had created such a fully-realized and riveting worldthat a reader wants to stick with the book for longer. Fortunately, this is a series, so more books are coming."                                                                                -SPR

From the Author -New edition uploaded 8/31/15, Professionally formatted to improve the reading experience -Once again enrolling it under Kindle Unlimited since readers have emailed me asking me to do that. :) Thank you all for your interest in my work. (Should be enrolled once again, by 9/19/2015)-Second book is more than half way done(16/10/2015) My goal is to have it finished/carefully edited by the end of this year. Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions/ask to be added to my mailing list at: Thelordofnerds@gmail.comThank you.---  When I sought publishers, one asked me to change my writing to appeal more to Asian Americans, the other told me to adopt a non-Asian Pen name. However, neither of them denied my talents. Despite knowing the dangers of self-publishing, I decided that ultimately, Asian authors should not have to be pigeonholed into a niche.I set out to write a good dystopian fantasy novel, without catering to the whims of others, and without betraying the integrity of the real life stories that inspired this book. And as I clicked "Submit" after thousands of hours of writing, I wished for only one thing: That should this work fade into obscurity, let it be because my talents were found lacking. And if you read this far... Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the book(Should you decide to grab a copy)

I highly recommend this book By George Fan This series starts explosively with "The Emperor's Shadow."The story begins with the lives of seemingly insignificant orphans wandering the streets, but you are quickly drawn into their world. You discover the injustices committed by the nobles of the Glorious Empire, and of the characters' desire to bring forth true change. The protagonists truly grow throughout the course of the novel as they grapple with the themes of justice, sacrifice, honor, and betrayal, all complex things for a child to comprehend. At the end of the novel, you are left wanting more and wondering what is next.If you're a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist (manga/anime) or Eragon (fantasy) or Hunger Games (fantasy), I highly recommend this book.

Great start, rough finish By John This new fantasy book introduces an interesting world and magic system, even if done on an overdone theme (abuse of authority by rich and powerful who are the only ones with access to magic, the poor live terrible lives, with the focus on orphans who overcome these struggles to attend an academy and challenge the system). The reliance of the magic on a chemical in the air that isn't present in some regions serves to make new and exciting what otherwise would have seemed boring. The book is divided into two parts: the first detailing the lives of multiple orphans from different regions and their attempts to overcome their present situations. This section is very well done, and I was able to empathize with the story of the orphans, which served as believable characters who I really wanted to root for. The second section, however, skips many years into the future, and is told predominantly in flashbacks to the time period between the two sections. Now, I understand that this was done to introduce some mystery and suspense into how things became what they were in the second section, but mostly it was just annoying to me. I was looking forward to learning about what happened in the intervening period, but only learned bits and pieces through the flashbacks, and not nearly enough to completely justify the way things were by the end. Additionally, I'm still very much in the dark about the nuances of magic and the academy itself, which were, in my opinion, the things I was looking forward most to reading about. I can understand being in the dark during the first section -- the reader knows just as much as the main characters know about the academy and magic. However, in the second section, the main characters have so much extra information compared to the reader, when they come up with clever solutions to problems or perform amazing feats, I'm not impressed, because I have no idea what their limits are in the first place. Also, I'm just not invested in any of the relationships between the characters in the second section, since the relationships all developed and occurred in a time I did not read about. All in all, the lack of knowledge made for a very frustrating ending to the book.In the end, I would rate the first section of the book a solid 5 stars, but the second only 3 stars, averaging to the overall 4 star rating. I will be reading the sequels when they come out in the hope of a repeat of the first section.

Quality book with many levels of complexity By Anezka Bubenickova Interesting take on the formula of corrupt advanced kingdom/empire and fight for freedom. The deeply entrenched caste system with designs that give illusion of the ability to break through castes and rise within the ranks, thin veneer of stability, that started crumble long ago. The hero that is not good in the traditionally heroic sense of the word, that does even thing that go against his conviction, not for the "greater good", but fully knowing that if he refuses, someone else will carry the tasks and in the end he won't be able to save anyone. The pacing is sometimes almost too fast (especially part two). I felt like I was looking at broken shards of history that someone tried to stitch together, but some pieces are still missing. I would like to see more detail, more about the characters and their development, but I don't see this approach as fault. It leaves the book more real. Not as an escape piece of fantasy, you live through the eyes of heroes, but as a story that has bit of a substance, that seams filtered through eyes of the historian, that leaves some places for your own interpretation.

The pictures are beautifully drawn and, unlike most adult coloring books, there's a good variety of subject matter. The pics are one-sided, and the paper is a pretty decent weight (you can avoid the minimal bleed-through by tearing out one of the blank pages at the end and placing it behind the page you're working on). Pam's artwork is awesome! These are going to be so much fun to color!!I had the immense pleasure of helping with the editing and formatting of this book, and I'd like to provide you with 3 of my favorite drawings from it. ENJOY!!!!!

Working on my second Bachelors, two kids, dogs to train, Army and all of it's obligations, intended or not. I MADE TIME FOR THE SECRET! Book after book Elizabeth Hunter turns out one fantastic story after another. Actually, to call them stories is an insult. Like taking a vacation just sitting in my recliner. Vivid details, raw emotions, twists and turns, drama without the teenager angst. What more could you ask for?I fell in love with B and Geo. So when she introduced Malachi and Ava I was a little standoffish. I didn't want the Elemental World to end. I didn't want my favorite characters shelved, like so many authors do, so that they can move on. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Well except that maybe I would like it more than the Elemental World. Yes, I said it.So, without further ado:The Secret should really be made plural. There is so much going on in this story- but don't worry it isn't too much to follow. More like getting the final exam in Chemistry and someone already gave you the answers. Things said before, in passing, now make complete sense. Hunches you had in The Scribe become true but with a twist! What a roller coaster ride Malachi and Ava have been on. When we left them in The Singer, they had just been reunited and it was rough. I think my Kindle was going to crack as I gripped the poor thing and read the anguish, the fear, the loneliness bleeding from the pages. I wanted nothing more than to have them back together, to live a happy normal life and the ability to kill angels, all of them, just so they could live in peace. Leave my Malachi and Ava alone they deserve it! She called him down from Heaven! The Secret picks up from where we left them in The Singer. Spending quality time alone reconnected and trying to understand the new versions of themselves. Malachi is still without his memories, a challenge for them both. Ava because she wants to support him and Malachi because he wants to remember. Both fearing they can't protect their beloved, the stranger next to them. But Ava has also changed. No longer helpless, the Secrets about her origins are slowly revealed. (I'm smiling because I know what happens but I can't tell you~ you'll just have to read it.) So a journey of discovery begins for them both. A hunt to figure out who they were so that they can understand better who they will be. But the more Ava learns the more she becomes afraid. Afraid for the humans, afraid for the angels, afraid for the Irin and Irina. Will she like what she learns? Will Malachi still love her? Will Malachi ever recover his memories? Will they be whole or will we lose one of them again? The balance must be maintained.I will leave you with a teaser, my favorite from the book and typical Malachi and Ava banter that I adore! From The Secret:They started up the stairs. Ava could hear someone snoring loudly.“I feel like it should bother me more that you’re so good at breaking and entering.”“Why?” Apparently, Malachi was no longer concerned with security. His voice was louder. He pulled out the earbud and tucked it in a small pocket of the vest he was wearing. “I’ve been doing this kind of thing for three hundred years. Trust me, it’s a lot less messy than it used to be. I don’t break and enter for personal gain. It’s just a useful life skill.”“Useful life skills are starting a campfire or… knowing how to tie really good knots.”“I know how to do those things, too.” He tugged her close and leaned down to her ear. “Give me one weekend without a world-changing revelations,” he whispered, “and I’ll show you my knot-tying skills.”The color rushed to her face. “Bad man. Very bad man.”He chuckled. “You wouldn’t be saying that by the end of the weekend.”

Their story was engrossing, deeply romantic and horribly heartbreaking. Book two brought Ava and Malachi back together and we were privileged to see how they came to know and learn to be with one another again in a journey that was hard to witness but felt realistic and rewarding. Book two also provided more world development with increased information about the Scribes, the Irina and the Grigori as well as the omniscient Archangels of the Fallen and the Forgiven. Book three continues with all these same groups but adds in the Grigora, the female children of the Fallen with their accompanying issues and complications, the return of the Irina to the council in Vienna, the politics associated with that and a look at some of the individuals of this group, a couple of surprising new family members for Ava and, finally, a passel of crazed young children who figure large in the final showdown and provide Malachi's next focus of anguish. Whew...there were times that I felt like I needed a playbook just to keep up with everyone. This book felt heavy and I found myself getting bogged down in the relationships between the various groups. I've read many richly detailed books in the past but the increased number of characters, increasingly complex intrigue and globe-trotting to one city after another in The Secret made for laborious reading from time to time. That said, once the big showdown was complete, the ending felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic. I could almost feel the author's desire to be finished with this story.Bottom line: there is no doubt that Ms. Hunter is a gifted writer with a deeply complex imagination. That said, the couple I fell in love with seemed to get lost in the intricacies of the plotting. I won't say I was disappointed by the end of their story, but I also won't say that I was thrilled by it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is how you do trilogy, folks. By Killian Mcrae Few are the authors in this day and age who can pull off such a satisfying, complete, and beautifully written series that both delivers on everything you were waiting for, and still leaves you wanting more.THE SECRET is the divine completion of the Irin Chronicles trilogy. As always, what makes Hunter's characters so endearing is how realistic they are (even if they are mythical creatures). Just because Ava and Malachi have overcome the boundaries of Heaven, Ava having haphazardly brought Malachi back from the dead, their relationship and course is not smooth. There are still a number of issues they have to work out that ring true to any long-term relationship: what's the vision of their future, what are their goals, will they have a family? And why is Ava the way she is? How are there Irina in the world that remain unknown to the Irin? Could there be more, and where would they look?A trip to visit Ava's father only creates more questions than it answers. In Jasper, we find a tortured soul, one who clearly loves his daughter and yet, finds his own existence a daily challenge. When Malachi and Ava glean just enough information to lead them to the next clue about Ava's ancestry, they learn of the secret, one that angels war to protect and which could either cost or ensure the survival of the Irin. What follows is an unraveling of truth that the reader could have never seen coming, and yet, makes perfect sense in hindsight. Through a careful weaving of storylines and characters, Hunter satiates her readers, leading them through the inner workings of Irin society, its Vienna Council, and in the process, dismantling all our preconceived notions about what we thought MUST be true. This is a total rollercoaster of a read, but one that makes you want to run right back into the queue and do it all over again. Highly recommended to all readers of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

I have referenced it many time in creating presentations and working on projects. Progress is made by implementing small changes at opportune times. Momentum is gained slowly and steadily by these small, periodic decisions. The wheel starts rotating slowly but as little pushes continue to be made, the wheel picks up momentum and is hard to stop. This concept is seen in the growth that companies like Google have experienced. Google started out as just a slightly better search engine. Small changes at opportune times have turned it into the booming multi-service company that it is today! Excellent book about management and leadership styles.

I bring this point up because Arilin has written some very intriguing love stories with giant furs before. The only difference being that the worlds they are set in feel like a world all of its own. What I mean by this, is that the world of Goddess is nothing more than our world with different wall paper, right down to a section of the book where it's mentioned that Europe is having problems with immigrating giants, while hard-line US politicians are calling for a ban on giants immigrating to the country. The plot of Goddess follows a cougar lawyer, Russell Rittenhouse and a pacific island princess otter, Kailani as they meet, fall in love, experience heart-break and betray. The characters didn't really jump out at me, as they are the usual suspects. There's the main antagonist, rabbit philanthropist Andrew Bennett, and the wise-cracking fox sidekick, Marvin. The only exception of any of these characters was Kailani. This is because she has an allure about her that's both mysterious and dangerous and reading the story, you'll understand why.Like I said before, there isn't much of a world as all the names and places are exactly the same. Aside from all humans being replaced by furs, the only other difference from our world and this one, are the giants: Or Size-Shifters. The cover of the book is a little misleading, as it's actually the cover of a magazine that Russell is subscribed to: Which means no giant husky woman. This magazine is brought up once, as an expository for giants and a kind-of chekhov's gun for Russell's relation with Kailani.Overall, there are some great moments in the book, but it takes a while to get there, and we don't even get to see any giant action until the very start of Chapter nine. The scenes when the characters are discussing giants are, to me, the only interesting moments of the book because it fleshes out the world Arilin is creating. The iterations between the characters just causes the story to drag, because it's just our world with furs. Still, it is a good read and I do recommend it to you if you like giant/tiny interaction fiction. Because, in-spite of the flaws I mentioned before, it's still manages to deliver.

A Masterful Tale for Macro and Non-Macro Fans By Bryan Osborne As a fan of Arilin Thorferra's past work—making it almost hard for me to believe that it took me this long to get to this tale—I'd be lying if I said I didn't already have some expectations. Well, after the closing page, I can safely and proudly say that not only did "Goddess" exceed expectations and showcase Arilin's already impressive resume, but it should be labeled as a perfect example on how macrophile storytellers have more to their craft than just what others may expect as only fetish material.Thoughts, feelings, drama, love, humor, law, and other more dangerous elements all lie in wait for Russell Rittenhouse. The journey from beginning to end can really tug at your heart and other types of strings. But the feeling to succeed is present all throughout. Without revealing too much of what's already been said, I'll just conclude that, while labeled as a "macro" tale (and, oh yes, there certainly is content that fits that genre), in reality, it's a tale for any 18+ furry to enjoy. Give it a read.

The Weave tells a first-contact story in which humans, seeking to exploit the much-needed resources of a system inhabited by creatures they assume are ''primitive'' and defenceless, discover their mistake the hard way. Human Caty Sanjuro, a seasoned marine and dedicated xenologist, and native Sundown, a determined astronomer, struggle to establish communication across the many barriers that divide their species, at first because they share a passionate interest in alien species, but finally because they know that only they can bridge the differences across species threatening catastrophe for both sides.

Vonda N. McIntyre, author of Dreamsnake and The Moon and the Sun, writes of The Weave: ''Unique protagonists. Unique aliens. Unique war. Nancy Jane Moore's remarkable first novel drew me in and kept me reading and left me, at the end, knowing that Caty Sanjuro and Sundown the Cibolan continue their work and their lives and their friendship. My favorite kind of novel.''

Michael Bishop, author of A Funeral for the Eyes of Fire, writes, ''In this accomplished first novel, Nancy Jane Moore dramatizes at least three great speculative themes: first contact, telepathic communication, and earthlings and aliens at war. In so doing, Moore narrates the compelling struggle of a brave human xenologist, Caty Sanjuro, to wring interspecies harmony from the chaos of interspecies misunderstanding and mistrust. Like Ursula Le Guin, Moore never settles for pat or clichéd extrapolations. Further, she treats each of her archetypal themes with adult thought-experiment thoroughness and all her characters, human and alien, with insight, respect, and compassion. Aficionados of real science fiction will love and celebrate this remarkable debut.''

The Weave, by Nancy Jane Moore

Review "Moore realistically and enjoyably describes the excitement of scientific exploration, corporate greed, conspiracy, telepathic conflict, and the desperation of natives determined to defend their home against invasion."  -- Publishers Weekly"The Weave ... is science fiction that thoroughly deserves its advance praise by Vonda N. McIntyre and Michael Bishop. ... In The Weave, even the sense of wonder gives way to outright surprise: comic, tragic, or somewhere indefinably between." -- Faren Miller, Locus."The Weave is an old fashioned First Contact hard-SF novel that fans of Eleanor Arnason and fans of Larry Niven could both appreciate."                                      -- Sam Lubell on SFRevuThe Weave is on Locus Magazine's 2015 Recommended Reading List in the first novels category.

It felt like the setup was a little too long and dragged somewhat, but the payoff in the last 2/3rds of the book was well worth it.The characters felt wholly realised and I never struggled to remember which character was who or what their motivation was. The depiction of an alien civilisation that's not too alien was wonderful. Thoroughly enjoyable and an immersive experience. By the time I was nearing the last few chapters I couldn't put it down and wound up staying up far too late to find out what happened. It's a story that stands on its own, and although I'd love to spend more time in this world the conclusion is satisfying and makes sequels unnecessary (although they would be more than welcome from this reader).Thank you Nancy Jane Moore for a wonderful read.

How about a sequel in which the humans have an election and the Cibolans can read the candidates' minds. Thanks for presenting such an interesting and consisitent new world and characters with full and identifiable personalities.

By Sara Stamey The Weave is a classic-style science fiction tale of alien contact that updates the tropes with contemporary issues of gender and corporate influence. The characters are fully-dimensional, and I was invested emotionally as the human anthropologist struggled against earthside interference to make essential communication strides with the sympathetic alien. I loved the exploration of different ways to communicate, other than through written or spoken language. And both aliens and humans had factions driven by special interests. An absorbing and immersive exploration of "the Other."
