Excerpt from PsychotherapyThis volume on psychotherapy belongs to a series of books which I am writing to discuss for a wider public the practical applications of modern psychology. The first book, called "On the Witness Stand," studied the relations of scientific psychology to crime and the law courts. This new book deals with the relations of psychology to medicine. Others discussing its relations to education, to social problems, to commerce and industry will follow soon. For popular treatment I divide applied psychology into such various, separated books because they naturally address very different audiences. That which interests the lawyer does not concern the physician, and again the school-teacher has his own sphere of interests. Moreover the different subjects demand a different treatment. The problems of psychology and law were almost entirely neglected. I was anxious to draw wide attention to this promising field and therefore I chose the form of loose popular essays without any aim towards systematic presentation of the subject. As to psychology and medicine almost the opposite situation prevails.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Tyler Hitchens A heavily dated book written in the early era of psychotherapy. Although Munsterberg's lack of scientific knowledge is obvious in his writings it cannot be helped due to the time in which it was written. What he does offer is a thorough and compelling philosophical appraisal of the "future" of psychology. He deals with the mind body problem with great skill and offers that the solution is in how the question is framed. Many questions in psychology are dealt with in this text in a most skilful and supervising way making this work a must read. However I would not recommend this book to an undergraduate psychology student who is looking for a book to expand their knowledge of psychology for study purposes. This book is so philosophical and dated it serves better for history, literature and philosophy interest. Much of Munsterberg's ideas have been falsified with the progress of science, but there is still something cutting edge about this book.

At one point, I was needing more information for a school paper, the psychotherapy book helped a great deal, and I was even able to cite from it. It is and awesome book, I recommend it.

This book explains psychotherapy to the person that wants additional background information. If you are wondering what your therapist does, or what they would do for you, this is not that book. However, I personally would be happy to assist you with those questions. I have years of studying psychology under my belt and consider myself a geek always wanting more information. This book provides me with that. It is really a great read that I cannot wait to reference in the future.

Amazon.com Review Malcolm Gladwell Malcolm Gladwell Reviews Think Like a Freak

In one of the many wonderful moments in Think Like a Freak, Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner ask the question: Who is easier to fool—kids or adults? The obvious answer, of course, is kids. The cliché is about taking candy from a baby, not a grown man. But instead of accepting conventional wisdom as fact, the two sit down with the magician Alex Stone—someone in the business of fooling people—and ask him what he thinks. And his answer? Adults.

Stone gave the example of the staple of magic tricks, the “double lift,” where two cards are presented as one. It’s how a magician can seemingly bury a card that you have selected at random and then miraculously retrieve it. Stone has done the double lift countless times in his career, and he says it is kids—overwhelmingly—who see through it. Why? The magician’s job is to present a series of cues—to guide the attention of his audience—and adults are really good at following cues and paying attention. Kids aren’t. Their gaze wanders. Adults have a set of expectations and assumptions about the way the world works, which makes them vulnerable to a profession that tries to exploit those expectations and assumptions. Kids don’t know enough to be exploited. Kids are more curious. They don’t overthink problems; they’re more likely to understand that the basis of the trick is something really, really simple. And most of all—and this is my favorite—kids are shorter than adults, so they quite literally see the trick from a different and more revealing angle.

Think Like a Freak is not a book about how to understand magic tricks. That’s what Dubner and Levitt’s first two books—Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics—were about. It’s about the attitude we need to take towards the tricks and the problems that the world throws at us. Dubner and Levitt have a set of prescriptions about what that attitude comes down to, but at its root it comes down to putting yourself in the mind of the child, gazing upwards at the double lift: free yourself from expectations, be prepared for a really really simple explanation, and let your attention wander from time to time.

The two briefly revisit their famous argument from their first book about the link between the surge in abortions in the 1970s and the fall in violent crime twenty years later. Their point is not to reargue that particular claim. It is to point out that we shouldn’t avoid arguments like that just because they leave us a bit squeamish. They also tell the story of the Australian doctor Barry Marshall, who overturned years of received wisdom when he proved that ulcers are caused by gastric bacteria, not spicy food and stress. That idea was more than heretical at first. It was absurd. It was the kind of random idea that only a child would have. But Dubner and Levitt’s point, in their utterly captivating new book, is that following your curiosity—even to the most heretical and absurd end—makes the world a better place. It is also a lot of fun.

Review “Utterly captivating.” (Malcolm Gladwell, New York Times bestselling author of Blink, The Tipping Point, and David and Goliath)“Over nine entertaining chapters [Levitt and Dubner] demonstrate how not to fall into hackneyed approaches to solving problems and concretely illustrate how to reframe questions.” (New York Daily News)“Compelling and fun.” (New York Post)“This book will change your life.” (Daily Express (London))“Good ideas... expressed with panache.” (Financial Times)“An interesting and thought-provoking read.” (The Horn)“Their most revolutionary book yet. With their trademark blend of captivating storytelling and unconventional analysis, they take us inside their thought process and teach us all to think a bit more productively, more creatively, more rationally --- to think, that is, like a Freak.” (Bookreporter.com)

By Derek Halpern If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life. And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works. But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world. And that's why I believe this is their best book yet. Here's a little summary of what I learned:1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone. As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic. And that's it.Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

By Guyzen Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this book. The way that the writers can intertwine different stories to make valid points is remarkable. It really does a good job of proving by observation how some things in life seem irrational, but ultimately make a lot of sense. The only problems that I have with the book are the length, just over 200 pages, and it rehashes a lot of stuff that they go over in other works. This book is easy enough that you can probably read in one or two sittings and it is very captivating throughout. I really enjoyed the anecdotes they use to bring across the point of the book that everyone can benefit by thinking differently about the world (i.e. think like a freak). One of the main things that I liked is how they describe the way children ask questions and are so curious about everything. Children don't have a set worldview and are eager to learn by asking a lot of questions. Parents often dismiss these questions when it might be valuable to see the world through a child's eyes and challenge set it stone opinions or thoughts. The writers also make a good point about how the three hardest words in the English language are "I don't know" and how it should be okay to say these words. By applying these words to our lives, we will first of all lie a lot less and more importantly be able to demonstrate a willingness to find out answers to questions we simply don't know.As I stated before, I wish that this book was longer, but I really did enjoy all that was written and would recommend "Think like a Freak" for those interested in challenging their current worldview and seeking to approach life in a creative way.

Their first book, Freakonomics, was worth the hype. The second book felt it was riding on the coat-tails of that success. I'm puzzled about how to think of this third one. It just wasn't very interesting. Or particularly insightful. Or even very entertaining.I read it on an eReader, so was somewhat surprised when I came to the end of the regular about 2/3 of the way through the book. The remaining 1/3 was detailed, boring endnotes. (And I usually LIKE reading these sort of endnotes with additional insight.) After a few moments consideration, though, I was glad it was over.Dubner has done a superb job evolving the podcast/radio show from a shadow of the first book to a high quality production with compelling stories, guests, and viewpoints. I'd skip this 3rd book and just tune into the podcast.

Dead Pulse Rising: A Zombie Novel (The Kyle Walker Chronicles Book 1), by K. Michael Gibson

Review The slavering hordes of undead rule the streets of Baltimore, their decaying forms shambling across the ruined city, implacable and unstoppable. The remaining survivors hide desperately, for all hope seems lost... until an armored fortress on wheels plows through the ghouls, crushing bones and decayed viscera. The vehicle stops and two men emerge from its doors, armed to the teeth and ready to cancel the apocalypse. This is K. Michael Gibson's "Dead Pulse RISING."The story follows the onset of a mysterious disease that infects the populace of Baltimore, turning many into flesh-eating zombies. Whether it is a manifestation of Mother Nature's wrath or a new form of biological warfare remain unknown. What law enforcement officer and ex-USAF special operator Kyle Walker and his partner Marvin Winters know is that they have to use their fighting skills, their massive armored vehicle, and copious amounts of firepower in order to survive and protect those dear to them. Their struggle is further complicated when spooks from the United States Department of Homeland Security arrive and display an unwanted interest in something Kyle has aboard his vehicle. The Homeland Security agents are also hell bent on keeping the Baltimore situation a secret, and are prepared to use any means to keep the greater public in the dark of what has happened to the city. The author combines social anxieties about doomsday scenarios, threats of bio-terrorism, and unwarranted government intrusion to craft an original take on the zombie apocalypse genre. Cannibalistic monstrosities, special forces operatives, tactical combat action, and the end of the world await readers in the pages of "Dead Pulse RISING."

About the Author K. Michael Gibson resides in Maryland with his wife, Kerri, and his five children, as well as his faithful dog, Peanut, and his cats, Oscar and Otis. He enjoys creating art and music and is an avid outdoorsman, spending as much time as he can in the great outdoors. He has worked in law enforcement for the past decade and draws from his experiences to deliver realistic yet imaginative horror.

Michael Gibson is a fast-paced horror novel following the exploits of security guard Kyle Walker as he is caught up in the wake of a mysterious plague sweeping through the Baltimore area. He and his partner Marvin Winters come across a traffic incident during a routine assignment and find police officers being accosted by zombies. The intrusion of Homeland Security into the affair anticipates an escalation of events as Agent Alex Bishop is assigned to investigate. Kyle and Marvin soon discover that Russian scientist Ivan Morozov has confessed to complicity in a Soviet plot to spread a manmade virus throughout the USA. Infected patients are transformed into mindless cannibals, and if the plague is not stopped, the fate of America may well hang in the balance. The author uses a first-person narrative along with omniscient narrative in taking us along the path of intrigue, suspense and wholesale carnage as the security guards join forces with HS Director Don Hammond and his operatives to deal with the outbreak. Kyle’s wife Karen provides us with the female perspective, her role as a day care provider placing her in a precarious position as the zombie menace threatens the children in her charge. The action moves flawlessly from scene to scene, and in the final frame Kyle finds himself compromised into helping the duplicitous HS agents continue on the mission. Yes, my friends, Volume Two is on the way.Pick up a copy of Dead Pulse Rising by K. Michael Gibson. You’ll eat this up and be ready for more faster than a barrel full of zombies.

By Jim I was very interested in the story, especially the part about the government cover up. However, as is often the case, there were a few issues with editing and grammatical errors.Death by spell checker. The wrong word, spelled correctly but not used as it was meant to be used. There were also some issues with his weapons knowledge and knowledge of military tactics and weapons.Minor issues, nothing really serious, but still there were a couple of what the heck moments. Where something changed and I went back to make sure that I was correct and the firearm being used had indeed changed or morphed into a different firearm.I will freely admit that I am something of a gun nut and having served in the U.S. Army like to read books that have their facts as close to real world as possible. Granted we are talking about a Zombie apocalypse, coupled with a Government or at least a Governmental agency cover up. But still real world accuracy makes the story much more interesting at least to me, and it shows that the author has done his fact checking/home work or knows what he or she is talking about.Kyle uses a .357 FTX round. Good choice, but I was thrown for a bit trying to place it. I ended up going to the safe and found out it was or could be the .357 mag 125 grain FTX Critical Defense round from Hornady. Or it might be the 140 Grain Flex Tip eXpanding by Hornady. Personally I like the 125 grain, but that is a matter of personal choice.Cops are not issued .44 magnums or .44 Specials, Desert Eagle does make a semi auto in .44 mag, but not Glock. Richard went from using something that shot a .44 hollow point to reloading his Glock. It has been awhile since I checked (it was in a past issue of the Glock magazine) but I remember that Baltimore PD (as well as the Maryland State Troopers) are all issued the Glock 22 in .40S&W, along with Remington 870 shotguns. Some qualified officers are issued M16 or AR15 semi auto rifles.Marvin uses a Glock in .45ACP, silver (I'm guessing the slide) with fake wood grips. Granted I have never seen one and wondered if it was even possible. So I did a quick search and I'll admit I was wrong, it is possible. Faux wood or 3M Di-Noc Wood Grain Vinyl Wrap can be seen here: http://www.glockforum.com/forum/f8/faux-wood-mahogany-glock-grip-4652/While I do understand what scattershot is, I wondered why the author did not just say buckshot or #4 shot, which is more common. I honestly have not heard the word scattershot used in decades, since I was little and living in lower Alabama. Usually shotgun ammo is referred to by what size the shot is or if it is a slug or specialty ammo.Another reviewer already covered the fact that the stinger missile is SAM (Surface to Air Missile), man portable, or fired from a vehicle or helicopter and is used for ground to Air or when used from a Helicopter it is a ATAS (Air To Air Stinger), but it is not a AGM or ATGM weapons system. So it would not be used as an AGM. Air-launched anti-tank guided missiles are what is typically launched from helicopters. Although I really am wondering if it is possible now. Sort of like the old UH-1B/C/M gunships that used the 2.75 in FFAR (Folding Fin Aerial Rocket) with 17 pound warheads, which was an unguided rocket...point and fire, hope it hits kind of thing. Now I was an 11B (Infantry), so I can not swear that it is impossible or even possible, but hey it could work like the 2.75 FFAR rockets that were used in Vietnam. There were also a few character issues, especially with Kyle. He was in the Air Force, did some time in the sand box and yet has issues with blood and guts as well as no medical training. Still I guess that some people might not get used to being in a war zone, or possibly forget what it was like, but while you do get older and slower you still remember the training.Over all I really enjoyed the book, it was action packed and went at a pretty good pace. I have paid more for books that I really disliked, so I feel that I really got my money's worth with this book and am looking forward to purchasing book two in this series.I think if some of the issues are fixed in the first book, or worked out in the second book I would rate book two with five stars. I would give this book a 4.5 star rating, if it was possible. But since it is not, I went with a four star rating. This book has a lot of potential and well I found myself rooting for Kyle, Marvin and Richard and want to know what happens next.

Spoiler alert. This one starts back in the 80's with the escape of Dr. Morozov from the lab where he worked. The Americans got him out and little did they know his work would bring down the world.Kyle Walker works for an armored car company. He and his seventy year old partner, Marv, a Vietnam vet, have been partnered for quite a while. They do deliveries and pick ups with various banks and businesses in the area. The hours can be long depending on how many pick ups and deliveries they have to make.On arrival at work Kyle heads for the vault to pick up the invoices and items for delivery. One of the items was almost left off. Its a case with an LED light on it. Kyle wonders about it but once he sees where its headed he forgets about it.Kyle and Marv head off but get stopped on the on ramp to the throughway by a massive accident. LEO's are on site.Kyle heads over to see if the officer will let him go around because of the armored car. No luck. The officer is being an idiot and he tells Kyle to get back in his vehicle. That's when the screaming starts.Kids are attacking and biting anyone they can. Those bitten, officers included, rise up and start attacking everyone they can.Kyle and the Officer, Richard, open fire and find the only way to stop these things is with a head shot. Kyle tells Marv, via radio, to get out which Marv does. They then observe white SUV's arrive on the scene. The men are attacked along with everyone else. They withdraw and Kyle sees jets streaking toward them.Kyle, in his military life, was in Air Force Intelligence among other things. He knows what those jets will do and tells Richard they need to leave noow. They get to a police cruiser and take off as fast as they can go to get away from the area.Marv is getting out when a chopper gets in his way. The chopper fires a missile into the road in from of Marv and the vehicle overturns.Marv can't figure out why the chopper is firing at him and the only thing remotely of interest in the armored car is that damned case. Marv grabs it gets out and leaves the area as fast as he can.The jets released bombs that obliterate the area killing everything in that area. Kyle and Richard end up in the overturned cruiser but are alive. They both get out and get the hell out of the area.Kyle and his wife were sweethearts at one time in their lives but grew apart and married others. They met up later and married.Between them they have five kids who are currently with Kyle's family in another State. HIs wife runs a very lucrative day care center for local kids. His wife is tough as nails but has no use for guns. That changes quick when a crazy man breaks into her house and she and the kids are forced to fight for their lives.Kyle and Richard finally find Marv and he lets them know its the case the Homeland thugs were after. The men make their way to the police station and arm up with weapons that were left.Kyle tells them he needs to get home to check on his wife and Marv needs to get home to check on his. Richard goes with Marv and Kyle heads home.Once there he sees his home has been attacked. There is a dead body in the living room and his wife's car is gone. His wife will be on her way out of the area to his parents house. Kyle gets to his gun safe, arms up and heads out to his parents home.Marv finds his wife dead in her bed and knows she's been murdered. He and Richard head out.So begins one pretty damned fine read. This one has Kyle, Richard, Marv, Bishop who leads the Homeland thugs, a Bishop who finds out exactly what Kyle did in the military, missing cases like the one Marv opened, murder, attempted murder, a Bishop who is determined to get those cases back and will use any means to do so, a Kyle who makes his way to his parents house only to be captured, a Bishop who issues and ultimatum to Kyle knowing Kyle can get the job done as he's seen Kyle's service record and knows exactly what Kyle is capable of and Kyle Walker doing his best to protect his loved ones and survive.

By lucille “Hypnotherapy –all you need to know about hypnotherapy and how it can help you” Dr Ruth Kidson.Ruth Kidson, an ex medical practitioner and a practising therapist has written a clear , informative account of the history and practice of hypnotherapy, She does not use jargon nor does she diffuse the book by referring to esoteric, mystical, concepts but she elucidates the practice succinctly and effectively. The history of its development and use worldwide is fascinating The author highlights the differences between therapeutic hypnosis used in a medical context and the more exhibitionist “stage “ hypnosis which is most often most associated with the term. The book does not attempt to proselytise but it gives numerous examples, some from Dr Kidson’s own practice ,of where the techniques have proved effective and sometimes where they have failed and why.In this book hypnosis is indubitably a powerful force for good with proven results in curing conditions such as asthma, insomnia ,anxiety and pain. It is most effective with those who are motivated and open to the power of suggestion and unfortunately it has sometimes been abused. This book has extended and deepened my knowledge and would be extremely useful to any potential patients as well as to any practitioner interested in integrating it into their practice. Although there is no definite knowledge about how hypnosis works these numerous examples show that it does!.Val Simanowitz (Counsellor, trainer and supervisor. MBACP Senior Accredited Therapist and Supervisor))..****

It's very well done and looks good on the DVD even though it must have been re-encoded later. She basically uses Bikram's standard set (which I love) and modifies about three poses, deletes a handful, and adds some. The ones deleted are those done on the belly or which put pressure on the belly; the modified ones generally involve putting your knees apart to allow room for your belly. I think the poses are held for a shorter time than Bikram's too. The new poses are just a few to replace the stomach poses. The audio track that comes with it is useful for playing again and again; it isn't so slow that it gets annoying on successive repetitions.I want to add one things I really think she should have mentioned: when you are pregnant, your tendons and ligaments loosen up a lot. It is very easy to overextend and overstretch. Do not strain when you are doing the poses.I think this is a great buy for anyone who already enjoys Bikram's Yoga and wants to continue doing it safely while in the second and third trimester.

I am a Bikram Yoga teacher and it's a fabulous resource to have. Have seen many pregnant mamas use this sequence. I'm thrilled to now have it on my kindle and not just as a DVD. Thanks Rajashree!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You Are the Gatekeeper of Your Thoughts - galvanizing! By Elizabeth Pavlovna "You are the gatekeeper of your thoughts." If nothing else this sentence should represent a bright light, a gateway, a symbol of direction. This short read galvanizes the relative factors that press on a positive outlook in life. The book guides you through the maze of negative factors that can mess with your whole life and how to overcome them. Working to keep a positive set of thoughts is obviously not easy for many people but if you do not try nothing changes. You can find enough inspiration here to help overcome negative factors in your life. Worth the effort.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I think its a good idea executed poorly By Sam Wanamaker I have a strong feeling that all those 5 star reviews are paid for. This book has several misspellings throughout it and with how short it is and how big the text is, there is not much content in here besides "think positive" repeated over and over. I think its a good idea executed poorly.

Very helpful tips for overcoming negative thinking By Paul I always believe that our mind is the most powerful tool we can count on and, if we invade our thoughts with negative thinking we will be crippling it's possibilities enormously. I needed a read that would give me that extra boost when I am feeling a bit depressed or having a hard time copping with my everyday problems and thoughts. This book provides a series of simple to follow tips that you can apply once you have identified you're being negative. Thanks to the author for making it so clear.
