Fun to learn about how these four people found their life passions. Loved the preface where author Katie Mitchell describes her role as listener and what she learned while interviewing people for her book. Read these oral histories collected by a new author. You'll be happy you did.

Families And Forgiveness: Healing Wounds In The Intergenerational Family, by Terry Hargrave

Review ..."Clearly written, thoughtful and articulate... The author's self reflections and stories regarding his won negotiation with shame, hurt and forgiveness add depth and veracity to the book... Useful to clinicians who work with victims and victimizers as well as to family members themselves."-Families in Society

From the Back Cover Fueled by a fundamental belief in the strength and resourcefulness of families, Dr. Terry Hargrave sets forth a conceptual framework to help therapists and their clients negotiate the difficult pathway toward achieving forgiveness. Unflinchingly honest yet deeply optimistic, the volume is based on a complex therapeutic process that Dr. Hargrave has used - quite successfully - with numerous clients who have suffered severe violations of love and trust within their intergenerational families. He conceptualizes the work of forgiveness as four "stations" on the journey toward this goal. These include Station One: Insight, which addresses the origins of family pain and how insight can be used to make initial inroads to trustworthiness by stopping and blocking the perpetuation of unjustified and harmful actions. Station Two: Understanding pertains to the origins of guilt and shame and how the client can rework his or her perspective to ultimately reduce pain. The tough and risky work of forgiveness is the subject of Station Three: Giving the Opportunity for Compensation. It is here that forgiving is considered as a process by which the victim gives the victimizer the opportunity to demonstrate love and trust in the present so that the family can be reworked. Station Four: The Overt Act of Forgiveness is a step-by-step process, whereby a confrontation between the victim and relational culprit can result in a restoration of love and trust. The author provides vivid case histories from his own practice that demonstrate how each of the four stations plays out in a therapeutic situation. Practitioners will also benefit greatly from a discussion of the therapeutic issues facing the therapist who ishelping an individual or family work through painful violations. Dr. Hargrave addresses the goals, pace, and assessment of forgiveness - ever vigilant to maintain the client's integrity and protection - as well as the role the therapist should play in each station. The volume concludes with answers to commonly asked questions about the complex and difficult but highly rewarding process of forgiveness. Families and Forgiveness, the only volume in the therapeutic field to address this timeless issue, will be a great asset to the practice of any therapist who deals with intergenerational violations among his or her clients.

About the Author Terry Hargrave, PhD, is nationally recognized for his pioneering work with aging and intergenerational families and the author of Loving Your Parents When They Can No Longer Love You. . Terry has appeared as a consultant on ABC's Good Morning, America, and he and his wife Sharon are therapists in private practice. Terry is professor of marriage and family therapy at Fuller Theological Seminary School of Psychology. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children and were the primary caregivers for Sharon's mother until her passing.

Boschen For years, I have been using Terry Hargrave's book as a basis for seminars I lead in prison and church settings. Many persons are imprisoned by their family histories and many persons in prison are freer than those walking the streets because they have done the plain hard work of examining the shame and pain of their rearing. Hargrave's four-stage approach to understanding the work of forgiving is important in helping others move beyond the traps of their family secrets and myths. This is not a theological work but it lends itself well to use in helping faithful persons forgive authentically.

In his experience, he has gained some marvelous insights. Hargrave's approach is understandable and on a common sense level that people can understand. His approach is not one filled with blaming of others or society. Instead it focuses on overcoming the hurts and learning how to forgive within families. Many times those people who we love the most can also inflict the most hurtful pains. Hargrave's book provides a step-by-step program to forgiving those hurts. I have used his material over the years and can attest that they are proven with the families that have chosen to apply them. If you are hurt or know people who are hurting from their families, this book is a valuable tool.Jeffrey Murrah[..]

Kate O’Connor’s had a rough week. Thrown into the middle of a war of succession between the daughters of the dragon queen, her introduction to the hidden world of the shifters almost proved fatal. Now, because of Kate and her new powers, that hidden realm has been revealed to the world, which hasn’t exactly won Kate any popularity contests. Still, it’s not all bad news. After all, it’s not every day someone you love comes back from the dead. Throw in a hot new boyfriend, and suddenly Kate’s got a lot to live for—which is bad timing, because now the queen’s set a bounty on her head and every shifter in Sydney is trying to collect it. Kate may have defeated a dragon already, but there are plenty more where that one came from. As her enemies close in and the body count mounts, Kate begins a desperate search for allies. The deadly game of the proving continues. If Kate is to save the people she loves, failure is not an option. The rules are simple: win or die. The Twiceborn Queen is the second book in the urban fantasy trilogy The Proving.

By Amazon Customer I read the first book, "Twiceborn" and had to read this one because I really enjoyed the characters and the problems and solutions along the way. In this book I got to continue with the story as it evolved even further. And now I must wait because the next book looks like it will be upping the game. All and all an enjoyable read. The is NOT a "paranormal romance" but a true urban fatasy. There is a little sex but the romance is not the focus . . . the story is.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another terrific installment of Sydney's dragons and werewolves By Pauline M Ross This is the second part of the urban fantasy series The Proving, and boy, is it a cracker. I loved the first part, Twiceborn, werewolves and all, but this one is, if anything, even better. It’s a rare accomplishment in a trilogy to maintain the momentum of the first book into the second, but here the author carries it off with style.SPOILER WARNING: the end of the first book had a number of spectacular reveals, and I really can’t talk about events in this book without referencing them, so it will be impossible to avoid spoilers for Twiceborn. Don’t read any further if you haven’t yet read it. There are no spoilers for this book, however. In Twiceborn, Kate O’Connor thought things couldn’t get worse after the death of her son, Lachie. Well, she was totally wrong about that. She found herself drawn into the war of succession between the daughters of Sydney’s dragon queen. The winner will be the last one left standing. Kate doesn’t want any part of it, but one of the dragon daughters has made a dying transition into Kate’s body. Now the two, dragon and human, are one.So Kate has no choice but to fight. But now she has something worth fighting for, because her supposedly dead son has reappeared and she also has a brand-new boyfriend. She’d love to settle down and play happy families, just the three of them, but first she has to settle the Proving, and become the new queen.Kate is an awesome heroine. Not because she’s a kickass fighter in the feisty female protagonist tradition of urban fantasy (although in dragon mode she’s pretty damn hot). No, it’s because she never loses sight of her human side. She’s been given some really short straws in life, but she doesn’t agonise over her situation, she just gets on and does whatever needs to be done to protect her son. It doesn’t always work as she hopes, and perhaps when your mother is half-dragon a child has to be aware of all the unpleasantness that goes along with that, but Lachie is always her first thought in a crisis, and she tries her damnedest to keep things normal for him. There’s this glorious conversation:“Lachie sniffed appreciatively.“Something smells good!”“That’s your lunch, mate,” said Dave.“Can I have something to eat now? I’m starving.”“You’ll have to ask your mum about that.”He gave me his best imploring look.“Have a piece of fruit. You don’t want to spoil your appetite.”I looked around at the others as I spoke. Did anyone else find this surreal? This kind of conversation was probably going on in hundreds of other households around Sydney right now. But none of them were waiting on the results of [spoiler: let’s just say ‘unpleasant dragon stuff’]”Kate is such a wonderful contrast between loving, worrying mother and couldn’t-care-less dragon. I’m quite sure that by the time the trilogy ends, she will have found a resolution to this dichotomy, but in this book it’s pulling her in two different directions. She has to determine when to bring her human side forward, and when it’s necessary to unleash her inner dragon. But the author doesn’t ever allow the story to bog down in angsty whining. The conflict is there, and Kate’s aware of it, but she never dwells on it. Not that she has much time to dwell on anything, because the action kicks off almost from the start and never lets up for a moment. Everyone, it seems, is out to get Kate, and it’s hard to know who she can trust. She has a core group of loyal supporters, amongst them boyfriend Ben, and Garth the werewolf. I got a bit cross with Ben, who whines a lot and turns out to be one of those irritating people whose idea of helping is to do something really reckless and worry-inducing. And Garth’s idea of helping is to quibble about every decision Kate makes. There are some new characters in this book, and one in particular lit up every scene. Shifters are always fascinating, but this was an unusual one (to me, anyway). The author ended the first book in awe-inspiring style, and I was sure she couldn’t repeat the feat. She could and did, in spades. The last few chapters swept me into a maelstrom of emotions, and some utterly shocking developments. And all completely logical. I’d even foreseen some of them, but they still took me completely by surprise when they happened. This was another unputdownable outing from the author, a well-written urban fantasy with loads of action, some memorable characters and that trademark Australian wit. Now I can’t wait for the final installment. Five stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interspecies politics and maneuverings - heady stuff By Sans This being the second book following seamlessly from the first, I'm not sure how well a new reader would go without reading the first but I'd say go read book one anyway! It's a great book :)This book develops the story further as more and more backstory is revealed, making you begin to grasp the size of the whole story. Lots of action, entangled emotions, lies and betrayals, as well as heroic acts and sacrifices. Dragons, werewolves and other interesting were creatures interspecies politics and maneuverings - heady stuff. Set in the Sydney area in Australia, any locals will recognise the streets and areas in the book... i'm secretly keeping an eye out for anyone who might be a dragon shifter...Read it - but read book 1 first.

The Private Square. Sounds innocuous until you realize behind it are sexual body parts that most are reluctant to discuss. Just saying the word "penis" can make people squirm. This revolutionary new book exposes the truth about the penis. For men, the penis represents courage, strength, sexual prowess, and virility–it is their machismo. It can be a symbol or power, used as a weapon or a means to share the utmost intimacy, but it is rarely talked about or studied in depth... until now. The Private Square: Penises unveils the mystery of the male's most prized body part, which comes in all different shapes, colors and sizes. The book provides a learning experience that demystifies the penis and reminds us that despite individual differences, there is an extensive range of what is normal.

Tabitha Katz lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with three teenage daughters, an estrogen-besieged husband and a very loveable dog. All but the dog are unsure how to deal with the fact that she wrote and published this book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Educationally insightful! By Monica H. Volume 1 of The Private Square: Penises is a must-have for anyone who believes that knowledge is power. Informative, insightful, educational, and at times, witty, Ms. Katz proves the point that men comparing themselves to a peer-created "prototype" is futile. The range is vast, which is evident in the photos of the subjects. For this reviewer, I believe that the more my children know about male and female bodies and their forms, the less they will seek out outlandish, fake, sometimes grotesque images of men and women all to commonly found on the internet. The book is factual and realistic, not pornographic. Whether you are a parent, a doctor, a therapist, or someone who needs reassurance that he (or his or her partner) is like everyone else, The Private Square: Penises is for you.

Book review for The Private Square By Kathleen I have always said, "if you've seen one, you've seen them all" and after reviewing The Private Square, I realized I have been completely wrong. I am very impressed with the photographs, the detailed information and more importantly, the concept of the book. Ms. Katz removes the taboo of the topic.

Getting thru the trials By DonnaHok As Shanti gets off the boat to the island to go through the trials of the Chosen Cayan feels like he should be going with her. Everyone else goes to the other side of the island to wait. But we find that a whole lot of new people are on the island and most are Graygual. Cayan does go and demands to be let into the trials to be with Shanti and leaves his team and the Honor guard on the other side of the island with certain orders. A lot happens in this well written book and several surprises. Well written and very entertaining to read.

Don't get me wrong, I like Shanti and Cayan, but Sanders is my favorite kind of crazy. Exciting things happen in this installment of this series. Shanti, Cayan and all of their crew are fighting for their lives. I can't wait to see what happens next.

In this compelling audiobook, the authors present an innovative therapeutic model for understanding and treating adults from emotionally abusive or neglectful families―families the authors call narcissistic. Narcissistic families have a parental system that is, for whatever reason (job stress, alcoholism, drug abuse, mental illness, physical disability, lack of parenting skills, self-centered immaturity), primarily involved in getting its own needs met. The children in such narcissistic family systems try to earn love, attention, and approval by satisfying their parents' needs, thus never developing the ability to recognize their own needs or create strategies for getting them met. By outlining the theoretical framework of their model and using dozens of illustrative clinical examples, the authors clearly illuminate specific practice guidelines for treating these individuals.

Review "The authors have skilfully presented an often difficult topic in an easy-to-read work which will be of value to helpers at any stage of their professional development." (Anglican Theological Review) ?So readable and chock full of understandable case examples that it demands to be shared with patients. It focuses on the conduct of parents and their children trying to make sense out of their chaotic lifestyles in search of love, self-esteem, acceptance, and inner peace. Its valuable insights can be potent reinforcers of the therapeutic experience.? (Jack G. Wiggins, Ph.D., past president, American Psychological Association) ?Such a find. The concept is an artful and practical synthesis that bears effective witness to the authors' depth of knowledge of contemporary psychotherapeutic literature.? (Joseph R. McCool, Ph.D., past president, Academy of Family Psychology) ?I believe that this book should be required reading for every family physician. It is a real eye opener for those physicians who routinely prescribe psychotropic medications without psychiatric input and without insisting on the patient's participation in therapy.? (Laurence Bouchard, D.O., past president, American Association of Doctors of Osteopathy)

I would have never guessed that I come from a covertly Narcissistic family system. My family was perfect - or so it seemed from the outside (and even from the inside!). We never fought, we never argued, we never had disagreements. My parents told me and my brothers that they loved us. For 37 years, I believed the family myth. We were the perfect family. But, the "perfect family" label never felt quite right to me. Even though I was told I was loved, I was also told that I "needed more attention" as a child, was a "difficult" teenager, and more recently that I have "emotional problems" (for daring to speak up about a glaring boundary issue). For years I even believed that I WAS a difficult kid until I started to remember my childhood. I remember my perfect father was an alcoholic who was largely absent and almost totally unavailable emotionally. I remember my mom insisted that we never express "negative" feelings. We were expected to always be positive and happy and if we weren't then we were chided for being selfish and ungrateful. If we were sad or disappointed, we were expected to "walk it off" and told that we should "stop crying" or they would "give us something to cry about". We were told that other (less well-adjusted and unhappy) people "just didn't get it" and we were instructed to pity those people. How is it that a kid who gets good grades, is compliant and respectful, doesn't smoke, do drugs or have sex, and whose only goal is to go to college a difficult teenager? The answer is found in this book - that she lives in a dysfunctional family system that defines any small statement of independence as an act of disrespect. In the book, the author defines the narcissistic family system - the "parent system" takes precedence over the "child system". Children raised in these families grow up to believe that they are wrong to experience fear, anger, sadness and frustration because their feelings are never validated. Instead, they are made to feel guilt and shame if they express any needs that conflict with the needs of the parents or are simply inconvenient for the parents. Speaking of my own situation, I even feel guilty writing this down because even mentioning it seems like a betrayal!I have found out the hard way what happens if you threaten or disrupt the family myth. Not only do the parents punish you, but other family members are enlisted to keep you in line. Heaven help you if you stand up for yourself and decide to define yourself on your own terms. Heaven help you if you create reasonable boundaries to protect your husband and your children from their intrusive behavior, lies and abusive manipulations. In the narcissistic family open and respectful communication is never an option. The authors of this book describe so many important aspects of this family dynamic. The case examples are an integral part of understanding how the family myth is enforced and how compliance is ensured. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has been made to feel selfish, disrespectful, ungrateful, or "emotionally unstable" in their family. These should be red flags to you that there is something wrong with the "perfect" picture. Another great book that I would like to recommend is "Emotional Blackmail" by Susan Forward - which explains in detail the tools that the narcissistic family members use to manipulate and control.I want to thank the authors from the bottom of my heart for helping me understand my family and ultimately myself better. I'm struggling with losing the myth (it was beautiful). But I'm grateful that at least I had enough foresight to marry a normal, kind, loving man who is also the best father I know.My only criticism of the book is that I wish there was more specific advice about how to deal with common interactions during holidays or birthdays (if one chooses to maintain some minimal contact). Now that we know what the problem is, what can we do about it?Thank you again for this wonderful book!

Then I found this book on amazon (it wasn't what my therapist recommended though). I needed a book that was not autobiographical, I needed to hear many stories of others lives with covert and overt male and female narcissistic abuse, in order to unlock myself from my disbelief. Finished it last night, still crying this morning, but I know things are going to be uphill for me from here. This book was written by therapists for therapists but I got so much out of it, I would recommend this highly for any adults recovering from "N" abuse who have had at least some therapy. As a victim I found that some of the techniques and methods described for recovery very helpful. (The Lavender Saphire is one of them) There are so many very specific things included in the Pressmans book that really touched home for me, opening doors and fitting puzzles together that had been unsoved for a lifetime. My book is filled with my highlights and dogears, well worth many times its listed price.

As someone who's read a lot of psychology, popular psychology, and self-help literature, I can say that this book is a clear standout. What differentiates it from most books of this type is the clinical expertise and experience of its authors, and its grounding in contemporary psychological theory. Everything in this book is both useful and well-justified. There is no "fluff" or "filler" (in contrast to a typical pop psych book that has, perhaps, one good idea and 300 pages of redundant or obvious material). I am reading it for the third time and still absorbing it.The book is very detailed in (1) describing the consequences of growing up in a narcissistic family, and (2) providing specific techniques for addressing these problems. Although the book is written by clinical psychologists for clinical psychologists (and would obviously be very useful in that regard), I also think it would be very, very helpful for just about anyone struggling with these issues. This is the only book I have ever reviewed on Amazon. I was motivated to do so because this book can be life changing.
