Into the Shadows is a story of survival and recovery from a traumatic brain injury. Dr. Krista Breithaupt was enjoying a family vacation when she suffered an aneurism that left her hospitalized for months. This book is an account of brain injury and her long journey of renewal, rediscovery, and growth. This story lends special insight and an intimate voice to a very common but misunderstood condition which changes the lives of the sufferer and those who care for her. Harnish What makes this book a must-read for people are two realizations:1) We all have disabilities (albeit not as severe or life-threatening) and can relate very quickly some segment of the emotions and issues that Krista faces in everyday life. What is clarifying is the ways that Krista has learned to adapt to the disabilities and frailties that we all find in ourselves. Like many of us, her first reaction may not be the best, but her ability to stand back and analyze herself and modify/adapt her behavior is a lesson for us all and nothing short of amazing; and,2) We tend to only be able to see or index 10% of the Internet - the rest - the dark web - can only be accessed by invitation. This book gives a rare chance to get invited to see life through Krista's eyes and emotions. Krista has always been a very private, independent and brilliant person in her career. Now people are invited to see the 90% of Krista that has been heretofore private and better understand the challenges that she has had to face personally. After the first 30 pages, I was hooked and could not put the book down.

Back to the Sunshine By Ellen A professional acquaintance, Krista is smart, driven, and breathtakingly beautiful (she fails to mention that in the book). She disappeared a couple of years ago to rumors of some terrible illness. She soared triumphantly back into my life with this amazing story of changes, wrought by a physiologic catastrophe. While as obvious to others as her partially-shaved head must have been, the reader learns gradually, as she did, the full impact of the event on her body, her thoughts, and her community. Her professional mind reigned supreme as more fundamental skills were found to be missing and painfully relearned. She was surely a challenging patient, as would be so many of us who have worked evaluating healthcare professionals Turn that part of the brain loose, filters removed by the damage, and awkward moments will surely result. The Krista who was is revealed as we learn about the new Krista, and both are fascinating and impressive. Her matter-of-fact approach to her adventure makes it an easy and absorbing read, while taking us "into the shadows" and back out again.

By Peggy Breithaupt An excellent picture of the impact such an unexpected happening can have on both the patient and her friends and family.A must read for anyone trying to comes to terms with how the patient perceives her situation and how friends and family react.
