The defeated people under the oppression of the Athonites really appealed to me. Even though they lost the war, they continued to resist the oppressive conquering nation. The narration put you in their place, on the receiving end of a long hatred between the two nations. Seri's people are treated like barbarians and lawless animals. The tension in the book was so strong, so real, that I found myself resenting the Athonites and rooting for Seri's people. However, I instantly picked up on bad vibes from Rilen, who had the first claim on Seri. And when I say claim, I mean it. He acts like a territorial animal toward her. His possessiveness didn't even vaguely feel like love. Even so, Seri allows him to bully her into doing his dirty work. He knew, KNEW that if she went to the palace that she would be treated horribly and may even be raped by the guards. Even so, he sent her there without hesitation. He didn't care about her, but she was so eager to please him. That's the first thing that I didn't care for.But I thought, ah, this is just the beginning, she'll get out of that bad relationship eventually.Well, she does. But she gets into another one.Enter Prince Graeme. At first, I thought he may not be that pompous. Sure, he's the prince of the nation that oppresses Seri's people, but hey, who says he has to be a bad person? The book thought so too. All the characters sung praises to his name, calling him "kind" and "gentle". All right, flattery is nice, but I wish it was a little more... true. Throughout the book Graeme is cold toward everyone, even Seri. Graeme keeps her locked in the castle and refuses to let her see her family. He has those moments where he's considerate of her feelings, but most of the book is him telling her, "We're bound by destiny, get over it." Seri is forced into his world with its cruel politics and racism, and yet she gets zero support from him. I understand that they didn't exactly want to be together, but...Well, that brings me to the next part. They act like they hate each other so much, but when it comes bedtime... all that hate is gone. I understand the author was going for the feel that they were forced together and grew to love each other, but it comes off wrong. They know nothing about each other. They hate the nation the other belongs to. Heck, Seri wants to KILL him. Even so, they have some steamy nights together. All the while, Seri is cursing the bond that forces her to get all hot and heavy with him. She even contemplates how to kill him. While having sex.What.Despite all this, they get carried away in the bliss of their bond. But in the morning they hate each other again.Maybe it's just me, but I felt that all they had between each other was bondage and lust. I could probably fit the actual conversations (not snarl sessions) between the two "lovers" in the first 2/3 of the book into a paragraph. That's how much they seemed to despise each other. I don't mean to be repetitive, but their love really did feel forced. And maybe I'm just a little too strict, but the romance really caught me off guard. I should have known, reading the author's profile now. But the absolute heat of their sessions was a little much. Especially since she still plans on killing him.Summary:I did really like the interactions between the two nations. The tension between them was palpable, and since Seri was an object of the uprising, I was really excited to see how it would play out. However, the almost instantaneous and forced romance between Seri and Graeme felt fake. It didn't help that during their steamy sessions Seri would be thinking "Oh crap, this stupid bond. I'm gonna kill him this time!" Like I said though, there is charm to this book. If you don't mind the whole problem between Graeme and Seri, it's actually a pretty decent book.

Great Fantasy/PNR romance By Nicole I absolutely adored this book, it reminded me of WARPRIZE by Elizabeth Vaughan, but with more of a paranormal twist. I'm a huge fan of Jill Myles' writing, so I loved that she kept her sexy and funny style throughout.I really liked that Seri was put between a rock and a hard place, trying to do everything she could to save her family and her people all while navigating this entire new culture she was thrown into. Seri does come across as very young and naive in the beginning and middle of the book, but I thought her character development was well done, as she realized the truth about the boy she thought she loved, and the man who won her heart.I would have liked to have had more time in Graeme's POV, because I loved his character so much. The persona the public saw, and the man he wanted to be were very different, and I wanted the opportunity to get into his head. I wanted the chance to really feel how much he struggled with Seri, knowing that they came from two incredibly different backgrounds, how scared she was of him, and how desperately he wanted her love and acceptance. Alas, Myles didn't grant that wish, other than a few scenes.I think fans of fantasy and paranormal romance alike should read this one. It was fun and sexy and different from the previous books Myles has released.

All she cares about is taking care of her family and getting married to Rilen in the spring. But when the Athonite court arrives, and Seri is given an opportunity to work for an Athonite noblewoman, she goes into the enemy’s castle to earn some money and to spy on the Prince. She soon finds out that the curse of The Blood is real and that the reigning royals are literal monsters who live on blood. When a twist of fate lands Seri and Prince Graeme together – bonds are forged, loyalties are tested and they each have to find a way to make things work.I liked Seri from the beginning. She comes across this normal village girl who works hard to take care of her family. Her world revolves around her father, sister and her love interest, Rilen. She is pretty much resigned to the life that has been dealt to her. Later in the book though, I was really mad at Seri when she had the chance to get her parents out and up to the castle for a better life, she really dragged her feet. Her father had been sick and could have had a cure and medicines, yet she really did not do much to get them there. She did send for them, though a bit late, but never really followed up on it. It just did not feel right to me that she was enjoying the grandeur of the castle while her family was left behind. Rilen on the other hand came off as a really good guy in the beginning. He seemed to care for Seri and even gave up his daily earning to make sure she and her family had enough food. He also seemed to be an idealistic, who wanted to fight for his freedom from the oppression of the Athonites. But his ideas and fight for freedom took him down the wrong path… I really stopped liking Rilen when he sent Seri back to the castle. Prince Graeme made an ‘okay’ impression on me. He could do more… really more if he wanted to. But I guess after growing up under the expectations, he needed time. I also liked Prince Graeme’s sister, she is such a darling. I wish she had a bigger role to play. The world building was fascinating. The concept of Athonites and Vidari and their difference in cultures was interesting. Also the concept of mortal and immortals were handles in a different manner. The book has Vampires, yet the word Vampire was never used. I would have liked more details and more history though… Like about the rest of Graeme’s family and even more about Graeme before he came to the Vidari lands. Also, I do understand the author’s need to explore the bond between the two main characters, but I sure wish there was less sex and more talking between the two.I do not know if there is going to be a sequel, (there is no mention and this book works as a standalone with an acceptable ending) but I hope for more. I would like to know more about how Graeme and Seri end up ruling their people and about Seri’s daughters. I am left wanting more…
