Praise for Shelf Life "Very rarely can an author say that a work set in his own created world is as good, or better, than the original. That is certainly the case with Shelf Life. I enjoyed every minute of this read. Shelf Life is an exciting, fantastic journey into the world of Pennsylvania with twists and surprises that kept me turning pages. I was sad to see it end." – Michael Bunker, author of Pennsylvania “Bob Crosley's Shelf Life – with its visceral depictions of Gutierrez's interrogations and heartfelt description of one man's love for his invalid mother – will leave you emotionally spent by the end. And that's good storytelling.” – Chris Pourteau, author of Tales of B-Company: The Complete Collection "A gripping vision of the harsh realities of life under Transport" – Philip Harris, author of The Girl in the City  Set in the world of Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania. Jacob Alders is a young man living in the city of New Detroit, on the Great Shelf of the planet New Pennsylvania. Jacob shares a small apartment with his invalid mother, who is suffering from a disease known as The Wasting, which has turned her into a shell of her former self. Raised to hate TRACE for what they’ve taken from the residents of New Detroit, he’s introduced to the net show of a former Transport director, and starts to question the official story. What starts as simple curiosity turns him into an unwilling pawn between powerful forces and changes his life in ways he could never imagine.

Jacob is an eighteen year old young man living in the industrial city of New Detroit, taking care of his mother who is suffering from a debilitating disease called The Wasting, making her non-responsive most of the time. With his father long gone after an incident with Transport, his hole-in-the-wall apartment feels very small, trying to make ends meet while taking care of the only person in the world he cares about. The only time he feels powerful is as a dragon slayer in an online video game he accesses through the internet in his head, which is the only escape he has from his desolate and stark reality where he feels overwhelmed and powerless. When he talks to his mother's long time doctor during an appointment, he begins to realize the world of New Pennsylvania has more going on than he suspects, especially in the control Transport exerts over its citizens. Going to a hidden internet address, he discovers a whole world hiding behind the lies that Transport has been telling than he ever knew. Attending an online virtual meeting run by someone named Marcus, his curiosity is aroused by what secrets he learns that Transport has kept from the populace. What happens from this point forward is where the story, compelling and engrossing already, hits a high gear. Let's just say when you live in a police state, poking around where you shouldn't be snooping gets you noticed. From here on in, Jacob endures unspeakable horrors. In a grueling series of scenes, we viscerally feel what Jacob feels with each gut-wrenching experience he goes through as everything he ever believed in or cared about is slowly and methodically stripped away from him mentally and physically.By the time we reach the end of the story, we feel like we walked many miles in Jacob's shoes, with not an ounce of strength left in us. Emotionally worn down to our last nub, we get a powerful and cathartic scene when you realize how deeply Jacob has been violated to his very core. With a galvanizing ending, we see how courage is redefined by Jacob's actions, leading you to cheer, despite the rigors of what he has gone through to reach this point. This was meticulously plotted and well-executed story. You felt horrible for Jacob and the tribulations he endures, as he is a well-rounded character placed between a rock and a hard place. I also enjoyed the precision use of each scene, as it all propels the story forward while building sympathetic, intelligent and nuanced characters. The larger description of New Detroit and the use of small manipulations by Transport to increase control over its citizens was well thought out and very believable, pulling me deeper into the narrative.I appreciated the connections with two other pieces of Pennsylvania fan fiction, Tales of B-Company: The Complete Collection & Donavan: From Michael Bunker's World of "PENNSYLVANIA". While this all takes place in the world of Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania Omnibus, weaving together this universe that much more, it very much can stand on its own as an independent work and as a commentary on the dangers of living in an Orwellian world. Finally, this novella was extremely hard to put down because it was so captivating and I simply had to know what was going to happen next in the story. An excellent debut by an author who no doubt has nowhere to go but up from here. =)Please note that I was given an Advanced Readers Copy of this eBook. A favorable review was never expected or asked for.

By Bill Matthews A few weeks ago I received an ARC for "Shelf Life", a tale of a young man and his mother set in the Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania World and the ongoing conflict between Transport and Trace. The young man's beliefs about his father and what he knows about the conflict is going to be shaken to the core of his being. His mother suffers from a combination of diseases not too far different from what we see around us every day, except there is no treatment that he can afford. Driven by harsh realities, he struggles to understand fact from fiction. This is a fast paced story and I give it a 5 Big Star rating. When I reached the end, my initial reaction was "bring on the next one". I am looking forward to the next installment. Even though I got a free ARC - I'll be buying a copy.Once again, being an ARC reader had given me the opportunity to get to know and read work by a new and promising author.

A young man who struggles to care for his sick mother is given a slip of paper containing an Internet address, leaving him with a decision to make. In this dystopic world, every move by citizens can be scrutinized, so any decision to listen to the voice of radicals can threaten your way of life and very existence. The emotions conveyed in Shelf Life are spot on, and the rhythm and pacing will keep you reading into the late night hours. Crosley is definitely a writer to keep an eye on.
