Jaeron thought he understood the streets of Islar. He thought he had come to accept his decision to follow his father's plan for him, to become a thief in a city rife with corruption rather than pursue his own interest in the priesthood. Family came first. Then he and his siblings return home from their first 'job' to find their father dying - murdered - and a package stained in his blood. A package containing three exceptional wooden toys and a decade old letter hinting at their lives prior to their adoption. THIEVES OF ISLAR is a 130,000 word sword and sorcery fantasy novel that delves into Jaeron's struggle between protecting his family during their quest for justice and his personal need for uncovering the past, a need driven by a ten year-old song he cannot get out of his head.

Tough to tell word count on Kindle but must be well north of 100K words, and only the first of a trilogy. I’m normally not a big fan of epic fantasy unless the author has a couple of Rs as middle initials—it’s really tough to write well—but Mr. Shade has given it a good go, especially for a debut work. That said, this not derivative of either of those authors in the least--if I was to make comparisons I'd say it's a bit of a cross between Sullivan's thief-centric Riyria series (without the bromance) and Addison's palace intrigue extravaganza, The Goblin Emperor (Ok, not nearly as over the top as that one).An exceedingly rich world with tons of characters, some familiar tropes but with some new twists. Not only are the landscapes and characters well developed, but the guild structure of the town, the religious bureaucracies and the like are equally well detailed. Heroes and villains aplenty (without giving any spoilers away, Larsetta is delicious), and lots of shades of gray characters in between. And the three protagonist siblings are well differentiated, nuanced and worthy of being rooted for.Beyond a very readable albeit chewy plot—this is no beach read—the combat choreography is magnificently fleshed out and fun to read. A few nits to pick, e.g. the overabundance of last names starting with “de” which makes it all the harder to sort out the many named characters, but overall an excellent read.

Hooked by the first few pages By Kindle Customer I had just finished a great series and was going through the depressing job of trying to find a new book that could hold my interest. After several attempts, I stumbled across this author and was immediately pulled in. Within just a few pages I was introduced to unusual characters, fantastic action, a mystery that I still haven't figured out and a refreshing writing style. My only cry of despair came at the end of the book when I discovered that, once again, I had unwittingly read the first book of a trilogy that hadn't been finished yet.

The storyline was well developed with unexpected twists. I highly recommend for anyone who wants to experience an adventuring life in another time.
