By Justin I find it kind of refreshing that there is an advanced, conquering alien race and the explanations make sense in how they can be so advanced and still be conquest oriented. Some 'warrior races' in mainstream scifi leave me wondering how they managed to get past the iron age, let alone up into space. This series definitely gives me a better answer to that and makes them more interesting for it.It also goes a bit more into how their culture works and is hardwired for better or worse. It reminds me a bit of the Lensman series by EE Smith where there were certain alien races had only one (intelligent) gender and how egalitarianism is kind of an irrational concept to them. The culture reminded me about an article I read on how pirate ships were set up- everyone had a day to day job but being a fighter/soldier was an assumed second job for everyone whenever it was needed.Without giving away spoilers the 2nd in the series also gives a really good reason why the conquering aliens would want to spare humanity. They have a problem and humanity, the creatures they could not defeat as they would have liked might be the resource needed to deal with them.
