An important guide to learn about working collaboratively in the schools By beth C Dr. Laundy creates an understandable and logical progression for the reader which helps in understanding special education laws and policies. She then leads the reader to understand and integrate the importance of the systemic approach in working with educators and families.She makes a strong case for a multi-disciplinary team approach among the mental health professionals most often involved in the educational system. AS she develops her explanation it becomes clear that the team cooperation among the mental health professionals should be a parallel process with the "family team" as well. The LOGS model provides a powerful conceptual tool ad a road map to assist the mental health, educational and family systems with intervention strategies. Likewise, her integration of the new DSM and explanation of how this fits with diagnosis and assessment on this milieu is quite helpful. An added bonus is her inclusion of information about various assessment instruments. If you want to better understand working within school systems, and want to come prepared with powerful tools, this is the book you need.

By Amazon Customer Dr. Laundy has provided us with an excellent manuscript describing a systemic approach to School-Based Mental Health/Student Achievement. She addresses the history of school guidance, its current status, and its development as the laws and needs of students have changed over time. She then acknowledges the deficiencies in the current system and how the inclusion of systemic (family) therapists not only addresses these problems, but drastically improves the delivery of services. The book makes a compelling argument toward a collaborative approach, including family therapists, and provides a blueprint on how to accomplish this in your school system.
