Thoughtfully crafted new magical universe with good character development By Amazon Customer A mystery, thinly disguised as a YA coming of age story, the story rests on a foundation of a magical system that completely eschews the Tolkien universe, or any other that I have encountered in the fantasy genre. The author introduces this new magical universe bit by bit over the course of the story as the protagonist travels to city of Vergence and enrolls in the university and develops his skills, his relationships with the other characters in the story and an understanding of his place in the universe. Weaving through this main story are the plots and conflicts between a vicious theocracy, a band of discredited and magically hamstrung uber-sorcerers, and a city government trying to keep civil society balanced and working. For those readers looking for lots of action sequences throughout a book this one will be disappointing. However the first book of a trilogy that introduces a new magical system must lay out the ground rules for the new system before subsequent action scenes can make sense. This book skillfully does that , and also introduces a rich cast of characters that we can care about. And there are enough action sequences to keep the book from being too expository. The storytelling is fluid and well-paced, with almost none of the emotional angst typically explored in a YA novel. I found only two spell-check artifacts, using 'of' instead of 'off' (I think). This is a really well-crafted story with well-written prose that I would expect from long-established and successful author. I look forward to reading more of John March's work.

By Benjamin Evans My only criticism was the sense of disconnection I felt when I encountered paragraphs of overly descriptive ‘introductions’ to new breeds of creature or beasts of burden… perhaps the use of pop culture 'beings' might have helped improve the pace as they have a ‘foundation’ already in our minds eye e.g. dwarves, elves, trolls etc instead John Marsh describes fish people, monkey people and multi limbed things... so many in fact that I don’t even remember any of the names given to these species or what was the point of describing them all to the enth degree.I only mention this cause at times I had to fight the urge to skim over paragraphs of text while my minds eye kept picturing the Star Wars cantina scene where you glimpse 100’s of different aliens all at once... now that’s easy to enjoy and absorb when watching a movie but imagine encountering that level of detail in a book when out of the blue the plot handbrake gets pulled and then diverts to pages of pro’s and cons of a horse drawn cart over a lizard drawn carts. Hopefully you can appreciate that it’s probably unnecessary in the whole scheme of things.Perhaps the copious amount of descriptive world building might build a case for ‘reread appeal’ and in a funny way that’s why I’m feeling generous and will give this a 5 star rating cause by the end of the book I do feel a yearning to get into the next one and even though I cant remember any of the ‘creatures’ names I can picture them fondly.

I have read some of the criticisms, however I have to point out that after having finished the novel I am looking forward to the second. As far as the plot criticisms posted by other readers initially it does not seem to flow as easily as other works I've read. However persistence does pay off and the waters do clear to give a gripping story.
