About the Author Marc Alan Edelheit has a Bachelor's Degree in Science and obtained a Masters in Education as a Reading and Writing Specialist. He is currently an executive in the healthcare industry staying up late at night to work on his novels. Marc has traveled the world, from Asia to Europe, even at one point crossing the border at Check Point Charlie in Berlin toward the end of the Cold War. Marc is the ultimate history fan and incorporates much of that passion into his work to bring greater realism to his fans. He is also an avid reader, devouring several books a week, ranging from history to science fiction and fantasy. Marc currently resides in New Hope, Pennsylvania, just miles from where Washington crossed the Delaware.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. A Strong First Novel and Solid Military Fantasy By Zach Stiger's Tigers is your fairly standard military fantasy, and that's not a bad thing. The titular protagonist, whose family is infamous for their military exploits, is serving as a captain in the Imperial Legion. He is given command of an infantry company in order to escort supplies and reopen communications with a cut off outpost. The plot is not overly ambitious; Edelheit includes plenty of action and progression and does a good job of wrapping things up nicely while setting the stage for the sequel. Roman history is the primary influence for the book; the soldiers are armed, trained, and organized similar to Roman Legions.I found the military focus to be mostly accurate; the smaller details such as dialogue and interactions were a nice touch. I also enjoyed the concept of political interference to be well handled, something also drawn from the Roman influence I believe. The setting is low magic, allowing Edelheit to really focus on the melee combat and high lethality of warfare. Fans of the early Black Company novels should find themselves enjoying this book. I'm not well-versed in Roman history but I don't think Edelheit drew on it heavily enough to give the book more than a base coat. The writing was serviceable but with many grammar errors, none of which were enough to impact my enjoyment. I also found the protagonist rather bland and uninteresting- I would like to see more development and "screen time" with other members of the company. I usually feel that limited world building is a good thing, especially for up-and-coming writers, but in this case it was almost none existent. I could tell you little more about the setting other than that the Empire is at war with someone in the north and combating a rebellion in the south (where the book takes place).I read this book using Kindle's "borrowing" feature; however I enjoyed it enough that I intend to purchase it and the sequel, when it arrives.Pros:-Good military fantasy.-Well written action.-Plot wraps up while preparing you for the sequel.Cons:-Needs more character development.-Setting and world needs more development.

Good military fantasy By Peter Good military fantasy.This entertaining military fantasy is centered around Captain Stiger and is modelled on a fictitious Empire which is very reminiscent of ancient Rome and its legions.Thankfully, the book is told mainly from Stiger’s perspective rather than having multiple POVs which always destroy continuity. It is very much a scene setter, introducing the main characters and the setting. One does need a little patience as there is little world building and several aspects of both the world and of the personal background to Stiger are mentioned without further reference.I am assuming that all of these and more will be revealed by the author in future instalments in the series; this is one of the reasons why I will definitely by purchasing the next book when it comes out as the scene setter is strong enough that I want to discover more about Stiger and his world.The narrative flows well, Stiger the character is solid if a little inconsistent (he goes from ice cold commander to berserk fury at the drop of a hat) and again I suspect that the author will solidify the commander in later instalments. Although there is a little magic, it is muted and unobtrusive. The plot develops very satisfactorily and the setting is intriguing and becoming quite epic.I am very much looking forward to the next book.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Finally, a good story mixing a Roman military setting with elements of Fantasy! Solid plot, political intrigue, ancient mystery. By Tiberius Discovering this author for the first time, I was a bit sceptical about the mix between a Roman military history setting and Fantasy elements such as elves and magic. I was an avid role-player of D&D and other games in high school and most of university, and remain passionate about ancient military history and Roman Republic and Imperial warfare in particular. But previous attempts at mixing those worlds came very short of my simplest expectations. Not so with this series, and the customisations used by the author to adapt Roman practices to a fantasy universe really hit the spot. The book focuses on the scion of a noble imperial family after he's earned the rank of Captain in the hard northern war against the Rivan kingdom. Captain Ben Stiger is reassigned to the Southern Command to help quell a rebellion, and discovers an inept leadership and diseased and demoralised legions. He's assigned his own company of troops to run a convoy escort to a remote mountain fortress whose garrison seems to have been isolated by the rebels. Along the way, the determined officer trains his men back into an effective force, gets on the trail of a centennial mystery, and faces the minions of a dark god. His lieutenant Eli Far is actually an elven ranger, a fact which surprises most of the people they encounter as few elves venture out of Highborn society any more. The author does a good job of describing the physical features, motivations and coherent personality traits of the lead characters, and convey the gritty realities of legionary life and training very effectively. In this first book of the series, fantasy and magic only play a very minor role, and their progressive easing into the story makes it all the more engrossing given the plot twists they enable. The pace is steady, balancing world building and story telling with action scenes. An enjoyable Kindle discovery, look forward to reading the second book in the series!
