Writing professionally for almost 20 years, I appreciate the nuance of different aspects of medical writing. I define a medical writer as developing content about the practice of clinical medicine, clinical research, or the health policy and economics influencing decisions at the point of care. I distinguish the role of a scientific writer as being more directed toward a lay audience. Personally unable to claim success at nailing 8th-grade level a la Flesch-Kincaid writing, I stopped trying after a client asked me to describe a ureter based on its resemblance to spaghetti. And then I was subsequently fired for the apparent important lack of the marketable skill. Or when challenged to write National Institute of Health (NIH) Congressional Justifications for government funding informed the writing had to be 8th grade level or it couldn’t go to congress for review. Yes. Really. My original perspective for this book was along the lines of Anthony Bourdain in Kitchen Confidential--a raw, informative, but not always pretty account of the medical writer's daily life. Thinking of the repercussions of telling such a substantive story I recall an Anne Lamott quote, “You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.”

In that short time I have seen the careers of many people in the medical community stall due to sub-par writing. This is the ideal book for those in medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotech and related professions who want to improve their medical writing skills. McClain combines practical tips and wit as she explains the keys to producing engaging, effective and professional written work product in these rapidly-evolving industries. Those seeking to establish themselves as consultants or freelance writers will find this book particularly helpful, as it offers an array of novel insights into the medical freelance writing profession that the author has acquired over the course of almost two decades working in this area. The books covers all aspects of medical writing, including but not limited to advertising copy for pharmaceuticals and other products, advisory board summaries, books, journal abstracts, medical education materials, multimedia projects, practice management materials, abstracts and posters for medical conferences, proposal writing, regulatory documents, web content and white papers. Highly recommended!

I could tell that the author does have a passion for her career and would like to help those new to the field. Having just started medical writing at an agency a couple of weeks ago, I found the quick pointers and anecdotes helpful. They gave me a better understanding of the field and what to expect. It's an extremely quick read (maybe 1-2 hours for slow readers like me). It reminded me of a lunch that my bosses took me on recently, where we talked a bit about work and how they felt about it. You'll find some good resources that you may or may not want to check into, but nothing groundbreaking.I could tell the author follows some of the podcast and thought leaders that I do, so I have heard much of the information in this book in other formats. My criticism is that it would have been beneficial to focus on a much more specific goal/task/problem/question. This book bounces all over the place without depth in any of them. Because of the generality, it felt like a quick attempt to establish more of the author's platform than anything else.
