Each is fighting in her own way for the freedom to express herself--often by thrusting sword through a censor's black heart! Be glad, the chicks in chainmail are back, and they will not be oppressed, repressed, or depressed! All new adventures of fearless women warriors by Eric Flint, creator of the Ring of Fire alternate history series; Nebula-winning author Harry Turtledove; Jody Lynn Nye, co-author of the national best seller The Ship Who Won; Campbell Award-winner Wen Spencer, and many more, including the inimitable Esther Friesner herself, as fantasy adventure takes a turn for the lighter side.Contributors:Esther FriesnerJody Lynn NyeJim C. Women Deal with Abuse By Arthur W Jordin Chicks and Balances (2015) is the sixth Fantasy novel in the Chicks in Chainmail series, following Turn the Other Chick. The initial volume in this sequence is Chicks in Chainmail. This humorous anthology contains an introduction, twenty-three original short stories about female warriors, and biographies of the author and editors: - "Introduction" by Esther Friesner presents a theme and a challenge for the readers. - "A Chick Off the Old Block" by Judy Lynn Nye chooses a young corporal of the guards as the companion of a royal princess. - "The Girls from the Hood" by Jim C. Hines mixes various fairy tales into a story of a gang of vigilantes. - "Smackdown at Walmart" by Elizabeth A. Vaughan takes Kate to Walmart with twelve Sacred Chinese Warrior-Virgins for contemporary clothing. - "The Mammyth" by Harry Turtledove follows Tundra Dawn as she and her two sidekicks search for a rare animal. - "Give a Girl a Sword" by Kerrie L. Hughes tries to persuade a mistreated woman to claim Vala, an enchanted sword. - "Bite Me" by Steven Harper Piziks puts Dagmar in the midst of a town of zombies. - "Dark Pixii" by Wen Spencer brings Valentina to an anime convention after being medically discharged from the Army. - "A Warrior Looks at 40" by Julia S. Mandala confronts a female warrior with the effects of aging. - "Roll Model" by Esther Friesner brings a wizard to a bakeshop where disgruntled female warriors are meeting. - "Second Hand Hero" by Jean Rabe leads Teri to a set of chainmail bikini attire that she finds very comfortable. - "Burying Treasure" by Alex Shvartsman engages a pair of twin sisters as guides with a cart load of treasue to bury. - "Calling the Mom Squad" by Sarah A. Hoyt involves a mother fighting an intrusion of a dragon. - "Rabid Weasels" by Robin Wayne Bailey sends a barmaid out to fight giant rodents. - "A Girl's Home is Her Rent-Controlled Castle" by Laura Resnick leads a young law student to greater efforts to keep her relationship alive. - "...And Your Enemies Closer" by Lee Martindale assigns Horatia to a task with a mage. - "Knot and the Dragon" by P.C. Hodgell delivers a dragon to the home of a witch. - "The Rules of the Game: A Poker Boy Story" by Dean Wesley Smith leads a war goddess to ask for advice from Poker Boy. - "Beginner's Luck" by Linda L. Donahue transfers an enchanted sword to Kirsta as payment for a gambling debt. - "One Touch of Hippolyta" by Laura Frankos inspires Elena to place a sword in the hand of a bronze statue. - "Saving Private Slime" by Louisa Swann commits Jillian to the task of training pink blobs in self defense. - "Unearthing the Undying Armor" by Elizabeth Ann Scarbrough rescues a burial site from commercial interests. - "Fashion and the Snarkmeisters" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch divulges the role of an ugly daughter in the fashion affairs of her mother. - "About the Authors" provides short biographies of the authors. - "About Esther Friesner" repeats the biography of this editor.- "About John Helfers" describes the experiences of this editor. These tales cover several themes about females battling for recognition. Several teach women how to deal with putdowns. Others concern the reactions of betrayed lovers. Only one has a negative ending,Unfortunately, this anthology is preceded by a nine year gap. One has suffered from a lack of the proper form of humor. Luckily, many prior authors have returned to remedy my problem. The next installment in this sequence has not yet been announced on Amazon.Highly recommended for Friesner & Helfers fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of feminine concerns, personal relationships, and humor. Read and enjoy!-Arthur W. Jordin

Almost all of the stories are excellent, though some do range away from the original concept; still, they fit with the title of the book. While I loved most of the stories, I have to give particular mention to several: "Smackdown at Walmart" by Vaughn; "A Warrior Looks at 40" by Mandala (great for us women of a certain age); "A Girl's Home is her Rent-Controlled Castle" by Resnik (LOVE her writing!); "...And Your Enemies Closer" by Martindale; and "Fashion and the Snarkmeisters" by Rusch (probably the least chainmail-y of the stories, but fun)."The Mammyth" by Turtledove was a giggle, but more because of the puns than the plot. Still fun!Recommended for anyone who likes light fantasy (mostly) stories, with a range of female protagonists and styles.

Many of my favourite authors have had stories, and the introductions by Esther Friesner are always marvelous. The stories were good, but much more grim than in the previous volumes. There were some funny bits, but no great laughs. I was sad that there was no tale from the "Ladies Aid and Armor Society" which had appeared in each of the previous volumes. However, the stories, if not amusing, were well-told. I am giving this five stars rather than four (since I'd say it's about a 4-1/2) in the hopes that it will inspire the publisher to give us volume 8. So yes, I'm fudging it a smidgen. I'm also giving it the extra star because of how much I loved all the previous books, and I don't want to kill the momentum. So nyah.
