Book 8 of the Demon Accords. College. A time of transition from youth to young adulthood. New lessons, new responsibilities, new distractions. A period of life treasured by most. Unless you happen to attend an institute of higher learning where the bullies are werewolves, the teachers are sadists, and the pretty girls are all deadly. A school like that demands a special kind of student, someone with the skills and power to survive. Someone like Declan O'Carroll.

I hesitate to call this a "side-line novel", as Declan has become a primary character. Better said, it broadens the scope of the "Demon Accord" universe. This novel combines characters from many of John's past novels, and associates them with the "College Arcane", which is an attempt to combine "normal" and supernatural in an educational environment to explore the effects of recent "Forced Accent" revelations on an unsuspecting world, and perhaps find a path to move forward. This novel reminds me of earlier novels of "Chris" -- growth, painful lessons, etc. Declan has a similar personality and naivety, though he does have (a little) more experience with girls. Declan has many common college experiences, including the difficulty of maintaining a high school relationship in the broader college world. Declan also has several important steps in his "development" forced upon him, and not in good ways.We again meet "Sorrows", and are forced to consider whether the book itself is sentient, or if the book's author has somehow placed a portion of herself within the book. We contemplate "AI" (Artificial Intelligence) and its potential effects on society. I caution the author not to go the route of "past movies" -- the follow-on plot doesn't demand a true artificial intelligence, but more of a "Watchdog program" that has been around long enough to get its "hooks" in all major governmental systems, and was "triggered" by a certain meteor strike. Too easy to fall into cliche and boring, if past movies and books are merely repeated.All-in-all, a good read. John paints a detailed picture of (Declan's) college life while maintaining Declan's first-person point-of-view. We gain a great deal of understanding of Declan's "mental make-up", and insight into other characters as a reflection of Declan's observations. The action sequences are well-written, serious, but not nearly to the level of "Forced Accent", which is good -- time for things to calm down a bit as other plots unfold.Recommended...

It brings back Caeco, Declan, Chris, Tanya and the rest along with some character you may have forgotten. The story follows your stereotypical life of a college student with a bunch of fight or die situations. So it's basically Hogwarts/Camp Half Blood/Xavier Institute. The plot was slow at first mostly because it was Declan complaining about classes and then complaining about how he has to continue hiding his true powers while being bullied by teachers, fellow students and a class bully who is actually an Alpha Werewolf (go figure). This book loses some of its momentum with alot of words and a lack of action. No joke, 15 pages is all you need for all the action sequences in this book, and I am including the sparring parts and the parts where its not really fight and Declan and company jerking around. Finally there is no real main problem in this book, which I mean there is no major bad guy or some conflict that is coming that everyone talks about at great detail. Sure they are mentioned but it is possibly 1-2 pages then nothing, then at the last 5 chapters of the book they appear and its a kick in the face, there is no real buildup. This part is more of a SPOILERS so stop reading if you want no sucky lifeDeclan and Caeco breakup, but the author did it in a way that was not satisfactory. It was in a way how someone writes out a co-star from a movie or t.v. show saying in a not so descript way that they are no longer there. Sure I accept that their relationship was a major contrast throughout the book in that both were jealous whenever the opposite sex was involved or similar situation (Daddy issues). Sure the book revolves around Declan so Caeco was not a major character, but it was very lack luster. I accept it opens up the possibility for a Raynne relationship, even a Stacia relationship if she ever got over Chris but time will tell. Then there is the whole visiting Circle Witches thing. Declan comes face to face with the witch that basically forced his mother and aunt to run to America. Then he comes face to face with his father and half sister. One would think with all the crap he talked about them that Declan would go Rambo on them. But in reality it was a 3 second meeting then Declan leaving saying he has to be somewhere else but then they are never heard from again. So what happened?

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding By Zeus I was starting to get worried after the last book thinking Mr. Conroe might be writing himself into a corner. It seemed everything was coming together and only a book or two left. But, wow, this book was amazing! Opened everything right up. Not only did he bring in characters from his Black Frost book - the Fae and all their intrigue, he explored witches to a great degree bringing their intrigues. Further, this story stayed inside college arcane developing new characters, growing old characters, and meshing them all together. We've got the Irish witches, the Boklunds witches and several other circles involved. Getting kinda long winded here.....pretty much virtually every character ever mentioned shows up. Finally, we get introduced to a possible new villain.... :) gonna have to read it to find out. All in all I cannot give this book enough praise. I absolutely love this series. Its both emotional and kick ass at the same time. On a side note allow me to be a bit presumptuous, I would love to see some possibly short stories or even novels exploring Chris and Tania's childhood and teens years. There is tons of material mentioned particularly in the earlier books regarding Chris and Tania growing up. I think it would be fascinating to read how Chris was trained, and how his school years went or even before he was born and self-fallen. The same goes for Tania. Well, I could go on and on but will stop here. Oh, Mr. C., I believe the brother and sister are from Kentucky, not Tennessee but I could be wrong.

Antonelli If you liked his first book or his second book or his third book you will love his fourth book. IF you liked Rescue Squad you will like this book. Bottom line, its the story of his life as a Lt on a Providence, RI ambulance. His trials, tribulations and successes. Its ambulance stories from the street and unlike some other books, this one has a professional editor so there are no typos (even though typos are the sign of authenticity in a cop of firefighter book).

If you have read "Rescuing Providence"and "Responding" there is not much new here. Some of the stories were published in the earlier books.

The passion he expresses through his writing as he connects with the people of this city makes me eager to read again and again.

A heroic prepper novel of collapse, retreat, and rebirth

When planes fall from the sky and the streets of Denver erupt into violent chaos, McLean faces a choice. He can drop everything and run for his mountain retreat, or he can go back for the woman he's begun to care about. Carrie was never part of his plan, but without her his plan may lose its meaning. Before their journey is over, she will have a greater part to play than either of them suspected. Making their way out of a city in full societal meltdown and across the Colorado Rockies to the ranch where they hope to find refuge, McLean and Carrie's small band grapples with the dangers and obstacles of a world without order and a life in which the strength of individuals-- both physical and internal-- will define their ability to survive.

So you have this ordinary guy, although full of common sense, saving a girl he likes, traveling to his ranch in the mountains. Sounds like your typical preppy-end-of the-world- book but actually it was on the scale of 1-5 a 4 because it was written exceptionally well and I could actually relate to those circumstance. We're not all Rambo-millitary-trained and I appreciate books more when the hero and heroine are just normal types. The pages were filled with plenty of entertainment and this was quite exciting to read. I'm looking for the next book.

31 of 34 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't get past the girlfriend. By Steve Fleischer The story was OK, the situation interesting (though not terribly credible). Dialogue was typical of a first novel (no idea if it really is Dennison's first). I like survival stories and I lived near the area, so I started with high hopes. But I couldn't get past the girlfriend.Carrie was really annoying - the protagonist (McLean) is attracted to her, so he comes back to save her from being robbed/raped/killed (though the author was not clear about the intended order). In spite of having convincingly proven her helplessness, Carrie takes charge and insists on going back to her house (which is indefensible and has no supplies) - and McLean drives her there. Then Carrie insists on waiting for her roommate who turns out to be both helpless and stupid (and is accompanied by someone even dumber and more helpless).During the escape, Carrie continues to impose her will and that wimp McLean acquiesces to every demand. Then Carrie starts flirting with McLean's friend - talk about ingratitude (and self destructive) - and McLean continues to worship her. They spend days together and McLean saves her life several more times and Carrie doesn't even unwind enough to call him by his first name. The final straw for me was when the two of them (Carrie is a proven neophyte with a weapon) witnessed armed 8 men raping and killing. Carrie's response is:"What are they doing to that poor..." she whispered, trailing off with a shudder. Her eyes strayed to McLean's rifle. "Shoot them McLean!" she mouthed, nudging him in the side.Carrie tries to bully poor McLean into taking on 8 killers with a bolt action rifle - That incident gives a pretty good idea on how much Carrie values McLean - and it gives an even better insight into her intelligence.Let's be clear - in an apocalyptic scenario like this, anybody (man or woman) with a gun, food, a well stocked ranch and competent friends is going to have their pick of dates. You don't have to put up with a dumb nag (male or female).I quit at the 72% mark; after giving up hope that Carrie would be less obnoxious.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Fantasy/Science Fiction Adventure with a Comic Book Feel. By speculative reader 22 Comic noir, Humphrey Bogart, Super-heros, mutants, a virus, science, culture, sex, and romance. This is like reading something Stan Lee would do if he had the novel approach. Still, the deeper mystery of the book lies behind all this, but Shadow Dragon is quite simply a non-stop action adventure, urban fantasy, modified superhero story with mutants and intrigue. You get Hermes and his simple homelife with mom and dad and what it means to live at home in your twenties. You get Kim, a telepathic mutant with tiger stripes who quite simply, is not afraid to kill anybody and laugh in delight while doing it. The story is about the death of mutants, but mutants here are the good guys, things comic book fans can relate to. The bad guys? The rich and powerful of course. And still, Coleman takes just enough time to stop and water the tomatoes in the garden so we can see these characters in their natural element. A solid tale with surprising twists and turns, just enough humanity to help us relate, but enough of a shocking horror of reality to make us second guess our own world. Shadow Dragon is a book for fans of fantasy and science fiction who love constant action adventure where there is never a dull moment...and with just a touch of the comic noir. Enjoy!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a future that might be our own By jeffry weiss What irks me regarding most sci-fi adventures is the writer creating a world that only he understands and appreciates. Wade Coleman has made a very believable world, yet different enough to make a reader curious as to what might transpire. Into that maelstrom, he places Hermes and Kim, as dichotomous as two people can be: one from a good home, then other from the streets and prostitution. Yet together they become more than the sum of their parts. They battle mutants and then the system attempting to use Eugenics to cleanse the human races of its unwanted parts. The book kept me spellbound. I loved the humor, the tension, the action and the physical interplay between Hermes and Kim. This author did a great job and I can’t wait to read the sequel.Jeffry Weiss

By Kindle Customer The story itself is amazing, the plot wasn't to slow or predictable, and the characters are realistic! My only question is, who is the editor, and did the author pay them well? So many mistakes it set my teeth on edge, even if the mistakes were small and easily overlooked, they detracted from the experience!

Disability evaluations are the most common clinical mental health evaluations conducted for nontreatment purposes. They place mental health professionals in the role of communicating information that is typically confidential to administrative and legal systems. Unfortunately, mental health professionals receive little to no training in conducting assessments that focus on disability and disability management, and often do not understand the implications and risks of providing this information, especially without conducting what are often specialized evaluations. Clinical Guide to Mental Health Disability Evaluations is geared for general mental health practitioners, providing them with the basic information needed to competently provide the various types of disability evaluations. It also provides enough information to inform forensic mental health providers in conducting more specialized evaluations.

Review

From the reviews:

“The book begins by addressing some of the most basic questions about how to handle requests for disability evaluations and general assessment of the issues, and flows methodically through evaluative issues … . Chapters end with a concise, but relevant, reference section, as well as sections of key points and conclusions. … can offer clinicians the opportunity to serve their patients and everyone else involved in these procedures more productively and comprehensively.” (Steven T. Herron, Doody’s Book Reviews, June, 2013)

From the Back Cover

Millions of people with psychiatric disorders are competitively employed in the United States labor force. At any given time, some employees with mental health problems may want or need to leave the workplace due to these disorders, either temporarily or permanently; others want to remain at or return to work despite mental health impairments. The administrative and legal employment policies and decisions governing these employment actions require medical documentation of psychiatric impairment and disability. Therefore, when occupational circumstances requiring evaluation of psychiatric impairment and disability arise, mental health professionals are called upon to conduct evaluations and document occupational impairments. Clinicians at all levels of training are bound to be asked to provide some form of disability evaluation for individuals who have been or still are competitively employed.

The Clinical Guide to Mental Health Disability Evaluations fills a need of increasing importance for practitioners in all mental health fields and at all levels of training, including general clinical psychologists and psychiatrists and forensic mental health specialists. The Guide offers comprehensive practical information needed to navigate the confusing intersection of the worlds of mental health, public and private agencies that adjudicate disability, and legal requirements that govern agencies and employers and protect individuals with mental disorders from illegal discrimination. Chapters review salient issues such as legal and ethical concerns, malingering, psychological testing, return to work issues, and complex boundary issues. The second half of the Guide addresses practical issues in specialized evaluations, including those required by

• Social Security Disability Insurance

• Workers’ Compensation claims

• Private insurers providing long-term disability benefits

• The Americans with Disabilities Act

• Workplace violence concerns

• Fitness for duty evaluations, including specific chapters for physicians, health care personnel, and law enforcement officers

The Guide ably addresses the need for training in conducting and documenting disability evaluationsand will improve mental health professionals’ understanding and competence in fulfilling all the important roles they occupy in the disability process.

About the Author Liza H. Gold, M.D., is Clinical Associate Professor in the Program in Psychiatry and Law at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.

Very informative with regard to legalities and advice on relevant information to report By Paul The handbook contains separate chapters on different kinds of disability evaluations (e.g., worker's compensation, fitness for duty, social security disability, etc.) It presents relevant criteria used by adjudicators, which can help clinicians to tailor their evaluations and reports to be most useful in the disability review process. It also contains the kind of clinical-legal language that can be useful to clinicians when phrasing their findings so that they would be most useful.
