Aarons MSW. PhDPAIN. All of us experience pain at one time or another. It can occur within the short term severity of a tooth ache, during the ongoing onslaught of long term illness such as cancer or the unexpected highway accident. Anywhere or anyplace physiological or mental pain can enter us. Pain is an inevitability of life. What do we do when it comes? How do we deal with pain when it won’t go away? Dr. Aarons tells us that pain is not a subject that we talk about. However, in the book she has written she has chosen to break the silence through her own studies and the personal experiences of many people who have lived through pain. She includes her own experiences as well. She walks us through the process and the subject brings us closer, not only to the reality of all that pain brings, but what can help those of us who live with it. Whether having experienced the severity of pain, or having had small, intense brushes with it the reader will come away with a broader understanding of what pain brings to the person, as well as to family and friends. Most importantly the author discusses ways in which to deal with that previously not often discussed subject.PART I: THE INSIDE VIEW --Dr Aarons begins with her reflections on pain. She discusses the impact of the pain of the patient, beginning with “Pain Changes the World you Experience.” and further highlights many psychological changes that occur within the patient along with the onset of pain. Then she brings in the people who speak for their pain. The reader becomes aware of the many ways the personhood of the patient is attacked and changed by the impact of the pain. She has interviewed eleven people who have dealt with the wearing down of chronic physical pain. (Throughout the book the stories of those who have experienced paint highlight her message.) .Dr. Aaron’s words summarize what is written by the patients. "PHYSICAL PAIN HAS NO VOICE BUT WHEN AT LAST IT FINDS A VOICE, IT BEGINS TO TELL A STORY.”PART II: THE OUTSIDE VIEW --The Caregiver is the outside person who is key through her/his relationship to the patient. The Caregiver brings attitude, personality and current state of being into the room. How this is dealt with by that person determines much about the health of the person. Reading this section one can understand how important the Caregiver becomes. Again, Dr. Aarons describes the use of touch, energy expressed to the patient and what can be talked about or not to the patient. Whether the Caregiver is a nurse or a family member, the Caregiver has a role of the utmost importance. “SOMETIMES IT IS HELPFUL TO KNOW THE IDEAL WE ARE PURSUING EVEN IF WE CAN’T BE PERFECT IN ACHIEVING IT."PART III: RISING ABOVE -- How does the patient take back personhood? (being not a person but an illness) Aarons strongly states that first point. The patient must learn to be on his/her own side, reach inwardly for inner strength and reach out for support. (One interpretation of those words could be to be your own advocate.) Dr. Aarons also asks the patient to look for the passion that will lead the patient back to love or look for what can bring some joy back into life. The even stronger thoughts that Dr Aarons ends with are: "BRING IN LOVE AND LOSE NEGATIVITY."This book gave me so much help in dealing with those unexpected changes that come with our life experiences and bring us pain. I can’t think of anyone I know who couldn’t understand and work with the results of their pain, including me. I have learned a great deal for from reading it. The book performs a service not only to those who must endure such unenviable states, but equally to those who care for them on a professional as well as a personal capacity.Combining the intelligence of the philosopher, the perspicacity of the clinician and the honesty and courage of the rugged survivor, this unusual work offers us a rare if not singular set of perspectives on a subject that all-too-often retreats from view.About Pain is divided into three parts.Part I, “The Inside View”, provides a descriptive account of how pain alters the fundamental structures of human experience, including our experience of the world, of the self and others, of space, time, and ultimately of purpose; for pain can make one question the very sense of enduring the unendurable, and in this it serves as a limit condition of human finitude. The analysis is at once conceptually rich and surprisingly personal. The structural descriptions of experience are illustrated by intimate examples drawn from Dr. Aarons’ own personal struggles as a sufferer, as well as that of eleven other people who suffer from various forms of pain, each of whom describes to us in their own words their unique struggles with pain, and how it transformed their lives as well as that of those closest to them. By bookcat This book speaks to the experience of pain, informs those who care for people with pain, and suggests ways of living with pain and still enjoying life. Dr. Aarons has both personal and professional awareness of the impacts chronic pain has on a life. The stories told by each of the chronic pain patients deepen our understanding of living with pain.. Dr. Aarons' discussion of rising above pain shines a bright light on enjoying life by managing pain.As a person who lives with chronic pain, this book broadened my knowledge of the domain of pain. The book is very readable and the examples clear. Dr. Aarons discusses "Rising above" one's pain and I think of myself as "living" with pain. No matter; we each come to the same place, enjoying one's life.I received an electronic copy of Dr. Aarons' book so that I could review it. The review above is my own.
