First published in 1970, original blurb:

‘Alienation’ is the catchword of our time. It has been applied to everything from the new politics to the anti-heroes of today’s films. But what does it mean to say that someone is alienated? Is alienation a state of mind, or a relationship? If modern man is indeed alienated, is it from his work, his government, his society, or himself – or from all of these?

Richard Schacht, in this intelligent analysis, gets to the root of these questions. Examining the concept of alienation in the works of Hegel and Marx, he gives a clear account of the origins of the modern usage of the term. Among the many insights to be gained from this analysis is a clear understanding of Hegel’s influence on Marx in this most crucial area. Mr Schacht goes on to discuss the concept of alienation in recent philosophical and sociological literature, particularly in the writings of Erich Fromm. Here he finds a great deal of confusion, which has resulted in a series of almost universally unquestioned misconceptions.

This, then, is a book for all of us who use – and mis-use – the term ‘alienation’, and who are interested in the concepts it brings to mind. The arguments of Professor Walter Kaufmann’s introductory essay provide a useful background for Mr Schacht’s analysis. In this essay, Professor Kaufmann states that ‘henceforth nobody should write about alienation without first reading Schacht’s book.’

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. thinking up losses of intimacy By as baby Babylons do SKITS This book is the result of a dissertation topic suggested by Walter Kaufmann. Richard Schacht was to examine the key uses of the terms in major European languages going back to the original Latin usage. The introduction by Walter Kaufmann covers how estrangement has been a common theme for profound thinkers. Karl Marx read some Greek tragedies each year to provide himself with some perspective on how hostile life can be. If society functions best as a popularity contest, those who become hostile to times in which they do not possess the key to popularity may become self-destructive by provoking some opposition from the tricks used to dominate. Alienation was used in legal matters to describe transfers of ownership, and the lack of a feedback loop to keep everybody informed of how ownership of money that has already been spent can become the primary future of a financial system flies far from the tree of smoke in which most people demonstrate their own stupidity on such matters.Extending the discussion to Existential Philosophy and Theology with an addendum on philosophical anthropology includes a child playing with "the feeling of one's activity as one's own." (p. 233). That is all my thinking will ever be to people who want scholars to have fields in which they can dominate thinking in the future better than a financial system which has bets on a bobsled going down clear through to China.

Lots of Fun for Fans of the Greater Demon Universe By Dave Phipps This takes place in the Keeley / Zack / Eve universe (greater demons, vampires, shifters, adelede, etc.). Tyler is human, or at least that's what he thinks. He has to navigate a world he isn't prepared for, but manages to surprise everyone, including himself. This is a fun story. Lot's of twists and turns, lot's of character development, and a great deal of interaction with several people we have met in other books. That interaction is what really made me enjoy the book. We get to see other sides of the characters we've met previously, and see them through the eyes of someone else. There is a bit of sex, but nothing too graphic. I would recommend a slightly older audience, but mid-teen and older should be fine.If you like the other Keeley / Zack / Eve books, you'll love this series. If you like any other P.S. Power books, start with Demon Girl (Keeley Book 1) and work through that series. I highly recommend it.

Olive This review is for the three book series of Tyler G. : Among the Living, Living Proof, The Living and the Dead.A new character, Tyler Garnett ("Call me Ty") is out jogging early one morning and encounters a gang assaulting a young woman. Being a good guy, he tries to help before he realizes that the gang are all vampires - as is the victim. Despite his certainty that he is going to die, he manages to survive by a combination of luck, some rudimentary martial arts training, and the onset of dawn which weakens and eventually stuns the gang.Of course, this really isn't the whole explanation. During the course of the story we encounter Kelsey, Zack, Eve, and most of the other characters in the story arc. If you enjoyed the earlier stories you will enjoy these as well.As a self-published author PS Power has the freedom to break most of the rules. After writing a sub-series "Other Places" he had the chutzpah to re-write and publish it as "Alternate Places" set in an alternate reality. Both series are good and worth reading, but I cannot imagine a publishing company allowing this to happen. He experiments with multiple different genres and styles of writing as well - mysteries, romance, etc. Many of his protagonists are 'over-powered' which is a stylistic mortal sin for traditional books. Increasingly more authors are successfully 'sinning' in this way. Notable examples are John Conroe, Laurence Dahners, and Glenn Bullion. As part of his wildly creative style he will sometimes deal with some philosophical point of views that are off-putting. The first book contains an anti-feminist plot element that is jarring. His vampires, shifters, and Aledes seem real enough, but the radical feminist characters seem so unreal as to break immersion. I recommend skipping through this part and getting back to the main story, which is quite good.

"trilogy", though we'll see more of him and the rest of the "KeeleyVerse" in the future.Tyler's nature becomes fully known, and he begins working on how to become less dependent on "his mother".His discoveries include "life energy" & "death energy" -- something like lightening would probably fall into an "energy energy" category!I added "points" for a reasonably good conclusion, though I detracted a few from Tyler's far too rapid a growth. He goes from barely being able to animate himself into fully controlling "death energy" within a few pages...Written in 'Power's typical "mind-dump stream-of-thought" manner in a linear, first-person POV, the story has the common typos & occasionally mis-aligned sentence structure that we've come to expect.Entertaining, for those that enjoy this type of writing...

The History of the Psychoanalytic Movement is a work published by Sigmund Freud in 1914. It is intended primarily as a polemic against the competing theories in psychotherapy which opposed his psychoanalysis, for example Alfred Adler's individual psychology and Carl Jung's analytical psychology. Adler and Jung had previously been followers of Freud but objected to his emphasis on sexual matters. His main criticism of them is their insistence on still calling themselves psychoanalysts.

The author presents techniques that can be used to induce and maintain hypnosis, as well as methods of doing hypnotherapy. John does approach the discipline of hypnosis, so that at times the reader might have some technical concepts also. The book is very understandable if you stick with it.I wish there were an accompanying CD with the book. Anyone seriously interested in what the power of hypnosis approach is should buy and read this book.

The definitive text By sdone Paul Kleinman, MD again gives us the final word in the radiologic evaluation of inflicted trauma in infants and children. In his third edition, Dr Kleinman has enlisted the help of many leaders in this challenging field of investigation and treatment. After nearly half a century in medicine I think I can safely say this is probably the best documented, referenced and illustrated medical textbooks I have ever read. I am in the process of reading it from cover to cover and can give it my best recommendation. It is a must-have text that should be on the desk of everyone working in this area of child protection

Excerpt from Biological Aspects of Human ProblemsThough the manuscript of this book was left in the form of a connected draft, it was not in final form for publication at the time of Dr. Herter's death. This applies more particularly to the chapters here grouped under book four, which do not fairly represent the full development of the authors thought as indicated by many additional notes, and by complete but unconnected passages by which they are accompanied. A more extensive treatment, especially of the eleventh chapter, had been planned; the substance of the two following ones was represented by three separate drafts, each of which contained a considerable amount of material not duplicated in the others. The most complete of these drafts is here printed, with the addition of a few short passages from the other two.In editing the manuscript for the press, no essential alterations iu plan or treatment have been made, but a few minor changes have seemed necessary. The five long chapters of the original draft have been subdivided into fourteen shorter ones and have been grouped in four "Books."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cullen Vitalism is a profoundly science-ejected concept, though many CAM or 'natural health' cabals falsely claim that vitalism survives scientific scrutiny. Here's a 1911 manuscript, published in 2007, that -- surprise, surprise -- illustrates the 'science-ejected status' of vitalism EVEN THEN, about ONE HUNDRED years ago, per:"if we accept vitalism in the present state of science as a substitute from the mechanistic hypothesis of life, we must do so with the knowledge that a stimulating working hypothesis is being displaced by one which holds out no helping hand to the investigator. For we cannot look on a belief in vitalism except as an act of faith. The conception is too vague, too inexpressible in terms that are clearly intelligible, to serve as a real aid to the progress of scientific thought. There is little room for doubt that the mechanistic theory is the one which now best serves the interests of humanity [p.027.]"-r.c.

“I am only that which others see me as, and others are only that which I see them as.” Everyone knew the name Beio-Rhett but no one knew what he looked like. While he did his part during the Rebellion, Beio-Rhett was not known for being benevolent. Instead he was seen by many as a mercenary. However in a galaxy where fighting is common place, and grudges are held among nationalities for generations, it is up to Beio Rhett, his friend Dembo, and the scrupulous Sergeant Singatt to travel to distant lands and become pseudo government agents. While seemingly straight forward for Beio-Rhett and Dembo, there is more to their mission than they were prepared for. Even with joining forces, can the ragtag group combat the Masked Menace?
