Long In Fight for Valor, Edwin fights to regain his memories and save Veracka from the Regent Council who would usurp the princess' power for their own gains.The thing about this book, and about the whole series, is it is just fun to read. The bad thing about this book is I could not put it down. I read it in two nights straight. I lost sleep, but it was worth it. It's just a fun blend of fantasy and sci-fi, political intrigue, and romance. The reading is easy going and the ideas and plot kept my interest. The characters are all nuanced and very easy to relate to, except for perhaps the regent council and assassins. There are at least seven really interesting characters here. I loved princess Thea, the young royal dealing with a difficult situation, planning and biding her time against her captors, working tirelessly for her people, and using some amazing abilities. Edwin's ability only grow in this novel and we see the real extent of it. Finally seeing progress between the Orescans and Verackans was great as well.Overall, this was a great closure to the series. There were a few twists and surprises that were nice, and everything is tied up nicely. And since I can't find much bad to say about it, it is 5 stars for me.NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Selections from Marx's Unpublished Masterwork By not a natural David McClellan's translation of selections from Marx's Grundrisse was first published in 1971 At that time, the Grundrisse was little known in the U.S., and a complete English translation by Martin Nicolaus did not appear until 1973.Written during the period from 1857 to 1858, the Grundrisse, or First Principles, was not published during Marx's lifetime. McClellan concludes, moreover, that its existence was not known to Marx's life-long collaborator, Friedrich Engels. In McClellans's judgment, however, the Grundrisse is the centerpiece of Marx's oeuvere, surpassing Capital in its scope and coverage.The Grundrisse undercuts tedious efforts to neatly divide Marx's work into periods, including those separated by an epistemological break that Louis Althusser and others have discerned between the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844 and the German Ideology, published two years later. Instead of moving rather abruptly from Marx the humanistic philosopher to Marx the materialist social scientist, the selections from the Grundrisse offered by McClellan make it clear that Marx's earlier and later work are complementary and mutually consistent. Yes, Marx's understanding of political economy was productively developed over the course of his adult life, but that development was marked by continuity rather than abrupt departures and dislocations.Marx's understanding of alienation, first developed in the Paris Manuscripts, has been frequently cited as an unfortunate youthful concern, betraying his early humanism and having drastically diminished importance in his later work, especially Capital. In the Grundreisse, however, alienation is a conspicuous concept, one which Marx invokes again and again in explaining the circumstances and activity of labor. The completed first volume of Capital, when compared with the Grundrisse, seems best described as the work of Marx when he focused narrowly on peculiarly economic issues. The Grundrisse, however, is much broader in scope, part of a planned multi-volume, all-encompassing social scientific master work that Marx did not live to complete.I read McClellan's book as a prelude to the daunting task of reading the Grundrisse in its entirety. McClellan provides his own introductory material and occasional footnotes, but nothing that serves the purpose of an instructive commentary. There is, moreover, no explanation of how McClellan selected the passages included in his one hundred fifty page book. The reader, in short, is left pretty much on his own, and the material that McClellan provides is often quite difficult, even for readers who are familiar with much that Marx wrote.The primary virtue of McClellan's book is that it provides an overview of the Grundrisse that does not include discussion of historically specific details that will almost certainly be unfamiliar to the reader. Nevertheless, this is not a book for someone completely unfamiliar with Marx and his customary mode of exposition. Given the opportunity, I thing Marx would have rewritten some of the material, recognizing that his efforts to be precise sometimes led him into bewildering wordiness and hopelessly convoluted passages.Nevertheless, it is abundantly evident that the Grundrisse is in many ways a continuation of the work Marx began with the Paris Manuscripts. I found McCleallan's selections especially valuable for their further development of the notion that the more productive the worker the more he strengthens the position of capital, and for illuminating the nature of a demand crisis, something that is currently crippling the U.S. economy.

What I loved most is that Elizabeth openly talks about her own inner struggles with the nursing profession and then specifically shares how she got through them. By stjohnisle Ellizabeth lays out so simply yet beautifully how we as nurses can learn how to re-ignite that enjoyment and love of nursing despite all the newer challenges we face on a daily basis. As a practicing nurse herself, she is keenly aware of what we as nurses must deal and not just the many issues we confront but the pace at which nursing has become. I love that she gives us specific tips that we can use anytime, anywhere to turn our thoughts around and make our shift and our lives a less stressful and more peaceful place to be. I recommend this book to every nurse! It uplifts, recharges, re-ignites and gives one a more positive outlook on nursing and life in general. It definitely has given me a renewed love and joy of what I do as a nurse.

I loved how it had me wanting to finish it in one sit down. I definitely didn't see that particular ending coming either. Great job by the author. I can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. Keep writing!

By Robert Steven Thomas Already read and reviewed the author's first book in this series "Warship" rating it 5-Star as well. This second book further develops the main character (Captain Wolfe) and his interesting personality. Having both served in the military as well as holding some minor local-community political positions over the last dozen years, I can easily relate to the difficulty that comes with being forced to coddle shallow individuals who hold higher positions of authority only by virtue of their extended tenure. So, in addition to being a very interesting scifi plot, this series also offers an excellent study and examination of power politics. The pace, action and adventure in the book are also first-rate.

Captain Wolfe, cleared of charges by the admiral that set him up for failure is put in charge of 5 of the most advanced ships the humans have. As the Phage are finally starting to make their move, secrets starts coming to light that could only have politician involved. When Captain Wolfe verifies these secrets, he takes things in to his own hands as he will not stand by as the Phage destroy planets while the military does nothing. After a pitches battle where an finally takes command and withdraws all remaining ships Captain Wolfe is left with two ships and is intent to protect the planet as best he can when an unlikely group of ships shows up, very powerful ships. In command of those ships is someone from the history books.A highly recommended read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Continuation By JPS This one is the continuation on “Warship”, the first of the series. It is a continuation in more sense than one.The story, which picks up where the first volume ends, is still not exactly original with largely mysterious aliens wiping out human occupied and colonised planets. This takes place while mostly corrupt, selfish and/or careless politicians and senior naval commanders (there are a few exceptions) try to use whatever happens for their own benefit. The theme of the lone (and heroic) destroyer commander who desperately tries to raise the alarm among a complacent and ill-prepared human universe but gets framed as a warmonger in an attempt to discredit him is also used.If this was it, with the “usual” space battles throw in and a relatively fast-paced and quite entertaining story, this would be an “ok” three-star book. There is, however, somewhat more to it. Some of the book’s twists and scenes are out of the ordinary, such as the way in which Commander Jackson are saved, at the eleventh hour of course, from what seemed to be total destruction. Another interesting scene is that of the Federal Assembly of Representatives in cession, with the author providing a rather interesting glimpse of politicking when some Federate States decide to suspend their contribution to the Federation, and even take hostages. Other “nice touches” were the introduction of a terrifying alien “super-weapon” and a first contact with these murderous aliens.There were however also a few little glitches which give the impression that the author may have been a bit careless about “loose ends”. For instance and to pick on just one episodei, Fleet Special Forces, which seem to be successors from Seal Teams, take part in a daring assault to release high jacked warships and their kidnapped crews. They are carried to their target by the hero and his fellow captain and ex-Executive Officer. There are several elements in this story which are a bit difficult to believe. One is that these naval crews and their ships would all have been captured without putting up the slightest resistance to begin with. Another is that they would have been, very conveniently, held, apparently unrestrained, on their own ships. A third is that once the confrontation is resolved through negotiation, no more is heard of these Super NOVA forces, although they were left in a rather precarious position with no way of pulling out.This one was still worth four stars as it is a mostly good and entertaining story. It still made me want to read the next instalment and learn how the humans will cope with the alien assault and retaliate.
