6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great Addition to the Ongoing Saga! By Kat Cameron Ms Buroker has done it again! This book continues the story of Ridge, Sardelle, Jaxi, Cas, Tolemek, Duck, Apex, Kaika and others we've met in prior books of the series. This book is not the best place to begin the series, obviously. The author does a great job of telling the story in such a way that you are reminded of what came before (which is important if you read a whole lot and can forget the major points and minor characters) but not in a way that slows the pace of the story in any way. So you can start Blade's Memory but the reading experience will be much better and richer if you begin at the beginning of the series with Balanced on the Blade's Edge - how Ridge and Sardelle met. From there Deathmaker continues the story with Cas and Tolemek's involvement. Blood Charged, Patterns in the Dark and The Blade's Memory continue the ongoing saga. There are some series that use each book to introduce a character and his/her story. These books incorporate all the characters as they journey together to tell the very large meta-story of their world. Fascinating!Once again our group of intrepid (and somewhat outlawed) heroes finds themselves in danger and trying to figure out how to save the day, their country and themselves. Some mysteries in prior books are solved here. Who is behind the plot to kidnap the King? Why are people trying to kill Sardelle? Whatever happened to the Dragon? And many more questions are asked while some remain unanswered. The story is compelling and moves very fast.I read a lot (I mean....a LOT) and Ms Buroker has become one of my favorite authors. Her characters are fully realized people...they have flaws and emotions and behave in ways real people would behave. Their development individually and as a group who acts together toward a common goal is a pleasure to behold. The love they feel for one another is heartwarming and the fear they feel for each other when danger looms is heart pounding. There is a point at the final battle scene where I had to put the book down and take a breath. I was overcome by one character's fear for another.If you've read the other books just let me say this one advances the story by leaps. There are a few things left up in the air so I'm certain there will be at least one more of this series. One character, in particular, has been left hanging a bit and I'm sure we'll see some resolution for those events. The Epilogue shows things to be a bit more settled for our crew but that only means it's the calm before the storm. Right?I highly recommend this book!!

Phenomenal continuation to excellent series By Rue A compliment of the highest order: I think the Dragon Blood series has edged to the forefront and is my favorite series still ongoing. That is, it had better be ongoing, or — I can’t threaten an author I love as much as Ms. Buroker (who also has my email address, Twitter account, and probably knows where I live) but let’s just say that my favorite character had a hard run in this book and I would really, really appreciate seeing a happy resolution for that person in a later book, soon. :) (Bonus if the point of view returns to Tolemek and Ahn; I absolutely adore Ridge and Sardelle, but the back and forth is something else I’ve appreciated about this series!)This book does a fantastic job of continuing to deepen characterization and relationships of the central four characters, while giving secondary parts a chance to shine. It has a strong romantic element without allowing the romance to overshadow the plot; the characters’ actions seem logical in the face of the crisis they’re in, and doesn’t put aside plot for love scenes … but also doesn’t end up forgetting that the romance was there in the first place — anyone who complained that the characters’ romances made them seem “unprofessional” at times needs to remember that Ridge Zirkander is not exactly lauded for his professionalism! It’s actually nice to see the return of a purely romantic scene (while it involves sex, it’s extremely tasteful and not explicit) in a series that was meant to feature them, and a tiny part of me hopes Tolemek and Caslin get one too, though I suppose they’re more, well, professional.I believe it was a better installment in the series than Patterns in the Dark, though this may be in part due to its length, and that’s not to say that I didn’t also give PITD a 5 star review. It definitely didn’t feel like anything in The Blade’s Memory was missing, and it certainly didn’t end too fast! It starts with a bang (not, for once, a literal one) and just keeps going, without any slow moments, though there are some extremely heartrending ones. Despite the heartbreakingly sad moments — which definitely killed what I thought was a romance in the making, I won’t lie — there are also incredibly funny ones in equal measure, and I’m always shocked and delighted when it’s broody Tolemek who brings the laughs.The ending, complete with the series’ best final battle yet, was one that provides a conclusion, but still leaves readers hungry for more, with some loose ends (and a lose villain) untied. The futures of Lieutenant Ahn, Tylie & Phelistoth especially hang uncertain in a way that hopefully leads toward a (positive, but intrigue-filled and exciting!) future plotline.

You may want to refresh your memory by re-reading Book 4. A brief summary in the book, such as "previously, ..." would have been nice. That's pretty much my only critique.Slightly longer: Buy this book, but if you haven't read the other ones in the series, start with the first one, Balanced on a Blade's Edge (see my review for that, I don't know how to link to my review, sorry...). Then, proceed with #2, #3, #4 in the series :-)If you're a fan of the series, you know that Jaxi is the soulblade partnered with Sardelle. We get a lot more of Jaxi in this book (although it's not an all-Jaxi book). Jaxi gets a lot of dialogue, and boy, she is really the life of the party. (Figuratively speaking. Jaxi doesn't party; she doesn't drink, she can't dance on a table with a lampshade on her head--she's a sword, after all!). Many plot twists are resolved; we get to meet Ridge's mom (if you thought the dad was a character, wait until you meet the mom!). Our various protagonists get put into really strange and difficult positions, but manage, through creative effort (and the occasional swordplay, explosive, flying, or fast dialogue), extricate themselves, and save the day.As usual, the dialogue and repartee (including internal dialogue) sparkles. There are more plot twists than usual. While the book ends on a nice ending point (no cliffhangers here, thank you), a sequel (or more than a sequel) are hinted at. (Heck, they're not hinted at. You can see at least two major unresolved issues--kind of like Darth Vader spinning off at the end of the original Star Wars film.)While I had some problems with Book 4, I have no reservations on Book 5. Take a bit of time to refamiliarize yourself with the characters and situations (maybe some re-reading of Book 4), then dive in and enjoy. This book is fast-paced, introduces new villains and complications, but also introduces new supporting cast. I really like how the characters (and minor cats, oops, I meant cast :-) are developed. And the plot and story line are superb.Very highly recommended. Enjoy!
