By John Vonhof Blisters have long been the #1 food care problem facing runners, hikers, marathoners, ultrarunners - in fact most athletes. Anyone who says they never get blisters simply needs to wait a bit longer, because at some point we all get them. Rebecca Rushton, a podiatrist from Australia, has studied blister formation, read research papers, tried techniques at races, and learned what works and doesn't work. Many athletes have given in to blisters as part of the cost of doing their sport.Fortunately, Rebecca's The Blister Prone Athlete's Guide to Preventing Foot Blisters, is written in clear and concise language with excellent images to show how to both prevent and care for blisters. It's value is two-fold. First, it provides an accurate explanation about blister causes and formation. Secondly, it provides instruction on how to both prevent and treat blisters in the most common areas of the foot: heels, arch, ball of the foot, and toes. By Jason Pawelsky Rebecca has done a fantastic job with presenting valuable information about blister prevention & relief in her new book, The Blister Prone Athlete's Guide to Preventing Foot Blisters. There's so much bad or incomplete information online about blister care, it's refreshing to read about the topic from somebody with practical knowledge of the skin issues that athletes frequently experience.I received an advanced copy of the book, free-of-charge and especially appreciated how Rebecca broke down each chapter based on the location of the blister - heel, edge, arch, ball of foot, and toes. It makes it much easier for people to focus on the particular issue they're facing and the products and techniques that have proven effective to treat blisters in that location.If you've struggled with foot blisters and are ready to give some proven blister prevention methods a try, this is a must-read!

I suffered an 8 week blood toe blister that would have kept me off the roads for months had I not used some of the strategies in her book. I received an advanced copy of the book and I love it as it's fun to read and the diagrams are colorful and easy to understand. I have recently had to purchase orthodics to help with some of my blister issues and am hoping the combination of biomechanics and Rebecca's book will see me to the end of several finish lines! A must read if your a runner with blister problems!

Governments around the world are wrestling with the problems of enormous debts, low growth, high unemployment and a gap between the demands of public expenditure and what can be raised through taxation. This problem has been acute since the financial crisis, but has been a hallmark of western economies for decades. Only a few countries have been able to avoid this pattern, mostly those blest with vast natural resources such as oil. There are two small islands with no natural resources which have enjoyed high growth combined with low taxation: Hong Kong and Singapore. Nor do they have any public debts, in fact, on the contrary, they generally run a budget surplus, and investment income is a feature of their government revenue. Andrew Purves, who grew up on the island of Hong Kong, has gone beyond the conventional analysis of taxation, and asked what each jurisdiction has in common, to bring about this happy state of affairs. The result is quite surprising for two countries who sit at the top of the table for promoting free markets and other capitalist ideals of small government. All land in Hong Kong is owned by the government, who makes it available for use by lease in return for a Government Rent, while Singapore now controls two fifths of its land area, as well as significant stakes in its strategic industries, which deliver a steady stream of unconventional income. Although in Hong Kong this situation has developed almost by accident, Purves suggests that here lies a model for generating public revenue that could be adopted in other countries to allow a shift in taxation from production and consumption to the Economic Rent of land, as advocated by Adam Smith over two hundred years ago.

From the Back Cover Fueled by a fundamental belief in the strength and resourcefulness of families, Dr. Terry Hargrave sets forth a conceptual framework to help therapists and their clients negotiate the difficult pathway toward achieving forgiveness. Unflinchingly honest yet deeply optimistic, the volume is based on a complex therapeutic process that Dr. Hargrave has used - quite successfully - with numerous clients who have suffered severe violations of love and trust within their intergenerational families. He conceptualizes the work of forgiveness as four "stations" on the journey toward this goal. These include Station One: Insight, which addresses the origins of family pain and how insight can be used to make initial inroads to trustworthiness by stopping and blocking the perpetuation of unjustified and harmful actions. Station Two: Understanding pertains to the origins of guilt and shame and how the client can rework his or her perspective to ultimately reduce pain. The tough and risky work of forgiveness is the subject of Station Three: Giving the Opportunity for Compensation. It is here that forgiving is considered as a process by which the victim gives the victimizer the opportunity to demonstrate love and trust in the present so that the family can be reworked. About the Author Terry Hargrave, PhD, is nationally recognized for his pioneering work with aging and intergenerational families and the author of Loving Your Parents When They Can No Longer Love You. . Terry has appeared as a consultant on ABC's Good Morning, America, and he and his wife Sharon are therapists in private practice. Terry is professor of marriage and family therapy at Fuller Theological Seminary School of Psychology. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children and were the primary caregivers for Sharon's mother until her passing.

Boschen For years, I have been using Terry Hargrave's book as a basis for seminars I lead in prison and church settings. Many persons are imprisoned by their family histories and many persons in prison are freer than those walking the streets because they have done the plain hard work of examining the shame and pain of their rearing. Hargrave's four-stage approach to understanding the work of forgiving is important in helping others move beyond the traps of their family secrets and myths. This is not a theological work but it lends itself well to use in helping faithful persons forgive authentically.

In his experience, he has gained some marvelous insights. Hargrave's approach is understandable and on a common sense level that people can understand. His approach is not one filled with blaming of others or society. Instead it focuses on overcoming the hurts and learning how to forgive within families. Many times those people who we love the most can also inflict the most hurtful pains. Hargrave's book provides a step-by-step program to forgiving those hurts. I have used his material over the years and can attest that they are proven with the families that have chosen to apply them. By Amazon Customer I read the first book, "Twiceborn" and had to read this one because I really enjoyed the characters and the problems and solutions along the way. In this book I got to continue with the story as it evolved even further. And now I must wait because the next book looks like it will be upping the game. All and all an enjoyable read. The is NOT a "paranormal romance" but a true urban fatasy. There is a little sex but the romance is not the focus . . . the story is.

Another terrific installment of Sydney's dragons and werewolves By Pauline M Ross This is the second part of the urban fantasy series The Proving, and boy, is it a cracker. I loved the first part, Twiceborn, werewolves and all, but this one is, if anything, even better. It’s a rare accomplishment in a trilogy to maintain the momentum of the first book into the second, but here the author carries it off with style.SPOILER WARNING: the end of the first book had a number of spectacular reveals, and I really can’t talk about events in this book without referencing them, so it will be impossible to avoid spoilers for Twiceborn. Don’t read any further if you haven’t yet read it. There are no spoilers for this book, however.In Twiceborn, Kate O’Connor thought things couldn’t get worse after the death of her son, Lachie. Well, she was totally wrong about that. She found herself drawn into the war of succession between the daughters of Sydney’s dragon queen. The winner will be the last one left standing. Kate doesn’t want any part of it, but one of the dragon daughters has made a dying transition into Kate’s body. Now the two, dragon and human, are one.So Kate has no choice but to fight. But now she has something worth fighting for, because her supposedly dead son has reappeared and she also has a brand-new boyfriend. She’d love to settle down and play happy families, just the three of them, but first she has to settle the Proving, and become the new queen.Kate is an awesome heroine. Not because she’s a kickass fighter in the feisty female protagonist tradition of urban fantasy (although in dragon mode she’s pretty damn hot). No, it’s because she never loses sight of her human side. She’s been given some really short straws in life, but she doesn’t agonise over her situation, she just gets on and does whatever needs to be done to protect her son. It doesn’t always work as she hopes, and perhaps when your mother is half-dragon a child has to be aware of all the unpleasantness that goes along with that, but Lachie is always her first thought in a crisis, and she tries her damnedest to keep things normal for him. There’s this glorious conversation:“Lachie sniffed appreciatively.“Something smells good!”“That’s your lunch, mate,” said Dave.“Can I have something to eat now? I’m starving.”“You’ll have to ask your mum about that.”He gave me his best imploring look.“Have a piece of fruit. You don’t want to spoil your appetite.”I looked around at the others as I spoke. Did anyone else find this surreal? This kind of conversation was probably going on in hundreds of other households around Sydney right now. But none of them were waiting on the results of [spoiler: let’s just say ‘unpleasant dragon stuff’]”Kate is such a wonderful contrast between loving, worrying mother and couldn’t-care-less dragon. I’m quite sure that by the time the trilogy ends, she will have found a resolution to this dichotomy, but in this book it’s pulling her in two different directions. She has to determine when to bring her human side forward, and when it’s necessary to unleash her inner dragon.But the author doesn’t ever allow the story to bog down in angsty whining. The conflict is there, and Kate’s aware of it, but she never dwells on it. Not that she has much time to dwell on anything, because the action kicks off almost from the start and never lets up for a moment. Everyone, it seems, is out to get Kate, and it’s hard to know who she can trust.She has a core group of loyal supporters, amongst them boyfriend Ben, and Garth the werewolf. I got a bit cross with Ben, who whines a lot and turns out to be one of those irritating people whose idea of helping is to do something really reckless and worry-inducing. And Garth’s idea of helping is to quibble about every decision Kate makes. There are some new characters in this book, and one in particular lit up every scene. Shifters are always fascinating, but this was an unusual one (to me, anyway).The author ended the first book in awe-inspiring style, and I was sure she couldn’t repeat the feat. She could and did, in spades. The last few chapters swept me into a maelstrom of emotions, and some utterly shocking developments. And all completely logical. I’d even foreseen some of them, but they still took me completely by surprise when they happened.This was another unputdownable outing from the author, a well-written urban fantasy with loads of action, some memorable characters and that trademark Australian wit. Now I can’t wait for the final installment. Five stars.

Interspecies politics and maneuverings - heady stuff By Sans This being the second book following seamlessly from the first, I'm not sure how well a new reader would go without reading the first but I'd say go read book one anyway! It's a great book :)This book develops the story further as more and more backstory is revealed, making you begin to grasp the size of the whole story. Lots of action, entangled emotions, lies and betrayals, as well as heroic acts and sacrifices. Dragons, werewolves and other interesting were creatures interspecies politics and maneuverings - heady stuff. Set in the Sydney area in Australia, any locals will recognise the streets and areas in the book... i'm secretly keeping an eye out for anyone who might be a dragon shifter...Read it - but read book 1 first.
