The influence of culture on mental illness has been the subject of considerable academic investigation and debate in recent years. This debate has provoked concerns about the validity and reliability of older methodologies which emphasised either universal characteristics of disorders which were heavily biased towards Euro-American systems, or the culturally relativist approach which saw psychological disorders as products largely of their own culture. The "new" cross-cultural psychiatry proposed that the integration of ethnographic and epidemiological techniques be required to enable a culture sensitive psychiatric model to emerge. This monograph describes a series of research studies conducted in primary care in Harare, Zimbabwe, focusing on the most frequent of all psychological disorders, Common Mental Disorders (CMD). The four consecutive studies are unique in several respects, most notably, the involvement of both biomedical and traditional health care providers at all stages, the development of an indigenous measure of CMD for use in epidemiological investigations, the examination of the relationship between local and biomedical models of psychological disorder and the sociodemographic and economic risk factors for CMD. The experiences and findings of these studies provide new directions in our understanding of the contribution of culture to the presentation, assessment, classification and risk factors for CMD in primary care in an urban African setting. The methodology used also sets out a model for epidemiological research in other areas of mental health in different cultural settings.

Elegant cross-cultural psychiatric research By Paul Linde If you are an anthropologist, sociologist, or physician interested in performing fieldwork and top-notch cross-cultural research, then Dr. Vikram Patel's book "Culture and Common Mental Disorders in Sub-Saharan Africa" is a must-read. The author explains in painstaking detail a lucid synthesis of his library research about mental disorders in Africa with truly elegant and meticulous field research that he conducted while practicing and teaching psychiatry in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. Although much of the book is presented in technical research terminology, the summary and conclusions sections are clear and thought-provoking. Dr. Patel is truly a pioneer and trailblazer in doing cross-cultural psychiatric research, emulating and expanding on the work of the original guru of cross-cultural psychiatry, Dr. Arthur Kleinman. I recommend this book as a "can't miss" primer on cross-cultural research and pscyhiatric epidemiology.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good beginning By William Guri Vickram Patel does a great job to present a conceptual framework for understanding mental health in Africa. The mainstream of mental health theories are preponderately Western and often do not adequately represent the reality of mental health in Africa. An important component in African conceptions of both physical and mental health is spirit possession. More than simple superstition spiritual causality is a phenomenon worthy of the attention of health care givers. Patel's work opens an avenue for beginning to understand the significance of African spirituality in the whole of health. I recommend this book highly for those called to work in health in Africa and particulary for mental health care givers.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds is a history of popular folly by Charles Mackay. The book chronicles its targets in three parts: "National Delusions," "Peculiar Follies," and "Philosophical Delusions." Learn why intelligent people do amazingly stupid things when caught up in speculative endeavors. The subjects of Mackay's debunking include alchemy, beards (influence of politics and religion on), witch-hunts, crusades and duels. Present day writers on economics, such as Andrew Tobias, laud the three chapters on economic bubbles.

Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, by Charles MacKay

About the Author Charles Mackay (1841-1889) was born in Perth, Scotland. His mother died shortly after his birth, and his father, who had been in turn a Lieutenant on a Royal Navy sloop (captured and imprisoned for four years in France) and then an Ensign in the 47th foot taking part in the ill-fated Walcheren Expedition where he contracted malaria, sent young Charles to live with a nurse in Woolwich in 1822. After a couple of years' education in Brussels from 1828-1830, he became a journalist and songwriter in London. He worked on The Morning Chronicle from 1835-1844, when he was appointed Editor of The Glasgow Argus. His song The Good Time Coming sold 400,000 copies in 1846, the year that he was awarded his Doctorate of Literature by Glasgow University. He was a friend of influential figures such as Charles Dickens and Henry Russell, and moved to London to work on The Illustrated London News in 1848, and he became Editor of it in 1852. He was a correspondent for The Times during the American Civil War, but thereafter concentrated on writing books. Apart from Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, he is best remembered for his songs and his Dictionary of Lowland Scotch.

By A Customer If you're into investing, sooner or later an investment columnist will mention Extraordinary Delusions as required reading. It's that and more...Charles Mackay first details France's Mississippi Scheme & England's South Sea Bubble (from the early 1700's). Then he covers the famous Dutch "tulipomania" of the 1600's. These are all enjoyable reports of financial manias and their aftermaths (though the South Sea Bubble chapter dragged on a bit). But the financial reader will be surprised when she realizes she's still only 100 pages into a 700 page book! Mackay proceeds to cover:Alchemy - 150 pages of exhaustive (& exhausting) detail of hobbyists & serious investors who were convinced they could turn base metals into gold, if only they could find the right ancient recipe & stoke their workshop cauldrons just a little bit hotter. The Crusades - 100 pages that prove that modern Islamic fundamentalists did not invent the idea of a "holy war". I had no idea the Crusades came out of official harassment of Y1K religious pilgrims! Remember this: If your country is being inundated with religious pilgrims, just try to think of them as a tourist opportunity. You don't want to get them angry! The Witch Mania - 100pp. This section was unexpectedly chilling. As I read about European witch trials of the 1400s-1600s, I kept thinking of our recent satanic child abuse trials. It's all been done before: The wild unprovable accusations, including eating dead babies; trusting unreliable witnesses specifically BECAUSE of the severity of the charges; False Memory Syndrome. At least the rack & Trial by Ordeal are no longer recognized as valid forensic techniques. The Slow Poisoners - Murder isn't really murder if you poison the victim slowly enough, is it?Also covered: Animal Magnetism, Prophecies, Fortune-Telling, Hair & beard fashions in men, catch phrases & slang, Relics, Duels & Ordeals, Haunted Houses, & Popular Admiration of Great Thieves. At times the book dragged, especially in the chapters I wasn't interested in. (But hey, that's what skimming is for.) So with that caveat, go ahead & get the book. It'll be a great investment of 12 bucks!

75 of 75 people found the following review helpful. The definitive book of manias By M. Mcfarland This is it. If you want to know how many times the world has been gripped by madness then look no farther than the reprinted edition of MacKay's classic. Written in that wonderful Olde English style of the early 19th century, MacKay takes us on a tour of the world's most horrifying manias - up to about 1840 anyway.I particularly liked the chapter on witchcraft and witch hunts since it told me everything I'll ever need to know on why seemingly intelligent groups of people band together to banish or murder innocent members of society - just because they are different. Another engaging chapter deals with millennialism - the fear and dread that grips society at the end of each millennium. If you thought the end of the last one brought turbulence, you should read what happened a thousand years ago. This book is often quoted by stock market pundits and talking heads as if it were a treatise on irrational behaviour in the financial markets. It isn't. It deals with irrational behaviour and mass stupidity in all walks of life. Five Stars.

Not very often is it that you read something that actually gets you excited, I don't just mean excited, I mean EXCITED!!!!!! Well, this was one book that did it for me. I consider myself to be a positive thinker but always believe that we must keep learning and reading new material with the hope that some of the information we read will eventually 'sink in' and unlock that part of our mind that seems to hold us back for some unexplained reason. This book certainly hits the nail on the head with the information it delivers and also the way it does deliver is in the method that the author chooses to guide us through 'the awakening'. Bottom Line : An easy to understand volume of how to finally unlock those dreams and gives us the methodology on how to start. It only takes one spark to to start a fire, let this book be YOUR spark.

There were some good tips provided in each chapter that will help you get from where you are today to the goal you have set in mind, even if it takes a few years to get there. Many people think that "thinking positive" will work, and the author believes it will, but it isn't an instant gratification thing. You need to be patient and be persistent and not give up! The book provides some good examples of famous people like Jim Carry, Sylvester Stallone, and Ghandi in regards to being persistent with their goals.I recommend this book to those looking for the means of motivation to get to where they want to be.

I really love that 3% and 97% comparison in the beginning of the book, it's similar to the way I think so it gave me a great laugh. The book also mention the Pareto law (80/20) which I totally agree on. I have been self-employed for over a year now and that's why I can recommend this book, it brings up a bit of a lot that can help you, especially with your mindset. And I agree with the Churchill quote in the book; “Never give up, never, never, never give up”.The business I run today are my third and NOW we're talking! Buy the book.

Schizophrenia has become a recognized psychotic disorder in modern day psychology and research has shown that one in 100 people suffer from this disease in some proportion or degree. It is a dreaded disease and comes as a near death blow to those who are diagnosed with this condition. This fear does not necessarily arise from the scary disease it actually is, but various misconceptions, myths, and misunderstanding that surround it. This disorder has been very thoroughly misunderstood and misrepresented. As a result, there is great confusion and stigma attached to it. This stigma, social pressure, and public opinion have made it very difficult to get the disorder diagnosed, treated or managed. Persons suffering from schizophrenia or under a risk of being affected by it are very insecure due to this public opinion. There has been so much talk about this psychotic disorder with little or no knowledge about it, that it has spread a rumor about the hopelessness and incurability of it. This book aims at spreading awareness and information about schizophrenia and act as a guide for those who want to have a better understanding of this horrible condition.

I have understood how little i think about Schizophrenia and how deceptive most data about it is. I knew it as like 'numerous identities' however acknowledged how wrong i was. This book clarifies the neurological systems included in Schizophrenia in a much less difficult path than most medicinal related books do.This book will stand out enough to be noticed rapidly and keep up it all through while instructing you in the meantime.I wish I had read this book much earlier. The book has detailed information on how to recognize, treat and help our dear ones suffering from this ailment.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Good Basic Place to Start Learning By Rebecca of Amazon In Anthony Wilkenson's book on Schizophrenia he explains that anyone suffering from this mental disorder has difficulty figuring out what is imaginary and what is real. They hear voices which is like another personality talking to them and this is called an auditory hallucination.People who are affected by this disorder also withdraw from society, can experience mania, can become very paranoid and struggle with things like obesity.Since 1 in 100 people are schizophrenic this is a book that everyone should read. I felt it was very informative, well researched and written in a way anyone can understand.I am going to read other books by this author soon. He really seems to know what he is talking about.~The Rebecca Review

Aside from the fact that it is hard to spell, the idea is also baffling. However, when I come across this book, a new light has been given to the word.Although it was not intended to help those dealing with it, this Schizophrenia book serves as a quick guide about it. And the myths, I think, are now cleared.

To the surprise of many, George W. Bush pledged $10 billion to combat AIDS in developing nations. Noted specialist Susan Hunter tells the untold story of AIDS in Africa, home to 80 percent of the 40 million people in the world currently infected with HIV. She weaves together the history of colonialism in Africa, an insider's take on the reluctance of drug companies to provide cheap medication and vaccines in poor countries, and personal anecdotes from the 20 years she spent in Africa working on the AIDS crisis. Taken together, these strands make it unmistakably clear that a history of the exploitation of developing nations by the West is directly responsible for the spread of disease in developing nations and the AIDS pandemic in Africa. Hunter looks at what Africans are already doing on the ground level to combat AIDS, and what the world can and must do to help. Accessibly written and hard-hitting,Black Death brings the staggering statistics to life and paints for the first time a stunning picture of the most important political issue today.

Review "Hunter...uses personal anecdotes to detail the story of a growing epidemic."--Library Journal"This book opens many new perspectives on what has become the largest epidemic in human history. More importantly, it gives us insight into the human tragedy and triumph that is the daily bread of people and communities in the areas most affected by AIDS throughout the world"--Peter Piot, Executive Director, UNAIDS In this book, global AIDS expert Susan Hunter combines her profound emotional intelligence and her expup0erience in Africa to help us understand the true state of the World that we live in. Her writing is brilliant. The tapestry she weaves is compassdn0 ionate, grounded in history, andextraordinarily real. She helps us believe that we can create a better world, if we learn to change ourselves to meet the challenges of AIDS and poverty as they confront us in the 21st century."--Paul Zeitz, Executive Director of the Global AIDS Alliance"Sus0an Hunter's book Black Death is the long needed AIDS 101 primer for Joe Q and Sally Public. Buy this book, read it, then give it to ten friends."--20Eric Sawyer, Co-Founder, ACT UP New York"The story of AIDS in the world is ultimately a story about the way the world is. Susan Hunter's insightp0ful and compassionate account of AIDS in Africa brings this truth into compelling focus. A must-read."--Robert Bilheimer, director of A Closer Walk"This is one of the most important books on AIDS to be published during the last several years. The picture of the epidemic is gripping; more, it's presented in compassionate human terms, and the scientific questions she raises about disease and evolution are quite intriguing. The book is chilling and fascinating in equal measure. It's a splendid read"--Stephen Lewis, UN Special Envoy for AIDS.

KlineCapelle In the first few pages of her book, Susan Hunter explains that HIV / AIDS is the first new disease on our planet since the 1400s; it is the leading infectious disease threat in the world today, outpacing tuberculosis and malaria by 2:1. It is the first disease to be considered a global threat to both national and international security. By 2010, the global human death toll from this disease will be higher than the COMBINED casualties of WWI, WWII, the Civil War, the Bolshevik Revolution, the first Chinese Communist War, the Spanish Civil War, the Taiping Rebellion, the Great War in La Plata and the partition of India. Every 18 months, more people die from HIV / AIDS than during the Holocaust. In some parts of Africa, they literally are running out of land to bury the bodies.Ms. Hunter, with her years of experience working with the UN on Africa, is in a unique position to offer an assessment of the effects of this disease on that continent as well as predictions of its spread globally. In the United States, many have become complacent about HIV / AIDS, believing that this is a disease which can be controlled with a few pills -- and as a result, HIV / AIDS infection is on the rise in the U.S. once again. Ms. Hunter's descriptions bring the realities of HIV / AIDS back into sharp, painful focus. This remains a terminal illness: in the U.S., HIV / AIDS mortality is back on the rise, as many develop complications with / from their medication treatments.Ms. Hunter's book reminds us that if we do not take action in the areas of disease prevention, education, and access to basic health care, we will face a Holocaust each year as a result of HIV / AIDS. Even in the U.S. where many have access to the medications, HIV / AID has become the leading cause of death among 18-34 year olds, as well as the third leading cause of death AMONG ALL AGE GROUPS in the U.S.READ THIS BOOK!

America This is one of five books I've read for a Geography of Health and Disease class at the University of Washington, and by far the least informative of all. Quite a few of the statements in this book are contradictory, if not flat out wrong; the errors I found were on secondary issues (facts that Ms. Hunter states about other diseases, such as River Blindness) but it makes me wonder how accurate the rest of her data is. Because of the way information is cited in the book (no citations within paragraphs, but a very long bibliography at the end) it is also difficult to see exactly where some of her data is coming from and whether it is still accurate. This book was written several years ago, and though a few of her predictions have come true, the majority have not and the reader should keep this in mind if they desire a truly accurate, up-to-date picture of this crisis.I agree that this disease, and especially the plight of those in Africa, should be of serious concern to us in the USA. I do not think that this book is the best source of information about how to deal with this crisis, but rather a good snapshot of one person's opinion about who is to blame for it. One of the biggest downfalls of the book, in my opinion, is her use of generalizations and fictional characters.I highly recommend Helen Epstein's "The Invisible Cure" as she writes as an actual scientist with a much more scholarly approach, cites her sources more clearly, and presents some real data on programs that have (and haven't) actually worked in Africa. She also points the finger and leaves the reader with much to consider, but does so in a more credible way, with fewer generalizations and, I believe, much more real data and interviews to inform the reader. Thanks!
