Schizophrenia has become a recognized psychotic disorder in modern day psychology and research has shown that one in 100 people suffer from this disease in some proportion or degree. It is a dreaded disease and comes as a near death blow to those who are diagnosed with this condition. This fear does not necessarily arise from the scary disease it actually is, but various misconceptions, myths, and misunderstanding that surround it. This disorder has been very thoroughly misunderstood and misrepresented. As a result, there is great confusion and stigma attached to it. This stigma, social pressure, and public opinion have made it very difficult to get the disorder diagnosed, treated or managed. Persons suffering from schizophrenia or under a risk of being affected by it are very insecure due to this public opinion. There has been so much talk about this psychotic disorder with little or no knowledge about it, that it has spread a rumor about the hopelessness and incurability of it. This book aims at spreading awareness and information about schizophrenia and act as a guide for those who want to have a better understanding of this horrible condition.

I have understood how little i think about Schizophrenia and how deceptive most data about it is. I knew it as like 'numerous identities' however acknowledged how wrong i was. This book clarifies the neurological systems included in Schizophrenia in a much less difficult path than most medicinal related books do.This book will stand out enough to be noticed rapidly and keep up it all through while instructing you in the meantime.I wish I had read this book much earlier. The book has detailed information on how to recognize, treat and help our dear ones suffering from this ailment.

A Good Basic Place to Start Learning By Rebecca of Amazon In Anthony Wilkenson's book on Schizophrenia he explains that anyone suffering from this mental disorder has difficulty figuring out what is imaginary and what is real. They hear voices which is like another personality talking to them and this is called an auditory hallucination.People who are affected by this disorder also withdraw from society, can experience mania, can become very paranoid and struggle with things like obesity.Since 1 in 100 people are schizophrenic this is a book that everyone should read. I felt it was very informative, well researched and written in a way anyone can understand.I am going to read other books by this author soon. He really seems to know what he is talking about.~The Rebecca Review

Aside from the fact that it is hard to spell, the idea is also baffling. However, when I come across this book, a new light has been given to the word.Although it was not intended to help those dealing with it, this Schizophrenia book serves as a quick guide about it. And the myths, I think, are now cleared.

To the surprise of many, George W. Bush pledged $10 billion to combat AIDS in developing nations. Noted specialist Susan Hunter tells the untold story of AIDS in Africa, home to 80 percent of the 40 million people in the world currently infected with HIV. She weaves together the history of colonialism in Africa, an insider's take on the reluctance of drug companies to provide cheap medication and vaccines in poor countries, and personal anecdotes from the 20 years she spent in Africa working on the AIDS crisis. Taken together, these strands make it unmistakably clear that a history of the exploitation of developing nations by the West is directly responsible for the spread of disease in developing nations and the AIDS pandemic in Africa. Hunter looks at what Africans are already doing on the ground level to combat AIDS, and what the world can and must do to help. Accessibly written and hard-hitting,Black Death brings the staggering statistics to life and paints for the first time a stunning picture of the most important political issue today.

Black Death: AIDS in Africa, by Susan Hunter

Review "Hunter...uses personal anecdotes to detail the story of a growing epidemic."--Library Journal"This book opens many new perspectives on what has become the largest epidemic in human history. More importantly, it gives us insight into the human tragedy and triumph that is the daily bread of people and communities in the areas most affected by AIDS throughout the world"--Peter Piot, Executive Director, UNAIDS In this book, global AIDS expert Susan Hunter combines her profound emotional intelligence and her expup0erience in Africa to help us understand the true state of the World that we live in. Her writing is brilliant. The tapestry she weaves is compassdn0 ionate, grounded in history, andextraordinarily real. She helps us believe that we can create a better world, if we learn to change ourselves to meet the challenges of AIDS and poverty as they confront us in the 21st century."--Paul Zeitz, Executive Director of the Global AIDS Alliance"Sus0an Hunter's book Black Death is the long needed AIDS 101 primer for Joe Q and Sally Public. Buy this book, read it, then give it to ten friends."--20Eric Sawyer, Co-Founder, ACT UP New York"The story of AIDS in the world is ultimately a story about the way the world is. Susan Hunter's insightp0ful and compassionate account of AIDS in Africa brings this truth into compelling focus. A must-read."--Robert Bilheimer, director of A Closer Walk"This is one of the most important books on AIDS to be published during the last several years. The picture of the epidemic is gripping; more, it's presented in compassionate human terms, and the scientific questions she raises about disease and evolution are quite intriguing. The book is chilling and fascinating in equal measure. It's a splendid read"--Stephen Lewis, UN Special Envoy for AIDS.

About the Author Susan Hunter is an independent consultant who has worked at the highest policy level with world health organizations (UNAIDS, UNICEF, USAID) in Africa over the last 20 years.

24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. A MUST-READ for anyone interested in the HIV / AIDS crisis By L. KlineCapelle In the first few pages of her book, Susan Hunter explains that HIV / AIDS is the first new disease on our planet since the 1400s; it is the leading infectious disease threat in the world today, outpacing tuberculosis and malaria by 2:1. It is the first disease to be considered a global threat to both national and international security. By 2010, the global human death toll from this disease will be higher than the COMBINED casualties of WWI, WWII, the Civil War, the Bolshevik Revolution, the first Chinese Communist War, the Spanish Civil War, the Taiping Rebellion, the Great War in La Plata and the partition of India. Every 18 months, more people die from HIV / AIDS than during the Holocaust. In some parts of Africa, they literally are running out of land to bury the bodies.Ms. Hunter, with her years of experience working with the UN on Africa, is in a unique position to offer an assessment of the effects of this disease on that continent as well as predictions of its spread globally. In the United States, many have become complacent about HIV / AIDS, believing that this is a disease which can be controlled with a few pills -- and as a result, HIV / AIDS infection is on the rise in the U.S. once again. Ms. Hunter's descriptions bring the realities of HIV / AIDS back into sharp, painful focus. This remains a terminal illness: in the U.S., HIV / AIDS mortality is back on the rise, as many develop complications with / from their medication treatments.Ms. Hunter's book reminds us that if we do not take action in the areas of disease prevention, education, and access to basic health care, we will face a Holocaust each year as a result of HIV / AIDS. Even in the U.S. where many have access to the medications, HIV / AID has become the leading cause of death among 18-34 year olds, as well as the third leading cause of death AMONG ALL AGE GROUPS in the U.S.READ THIS BOOK!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Read with a grain of salt By Cpt. America This is one of five books I've read for a Geography of Health and Disease class at the University of Washington, and by far the least informative of all. Quite a few of the statements in this book are contradictory, if not flat out wrong; the errors I found were on secondary issues (facts that Ms. Hunter states about other diseases, such as River Blindness) but it makes me wonder how accurate the rest of her data is. Because of the way information is cited in the book (no citations within paragraphs, but a very long bibliography at the end) it is also difficult to see exactly where some of her data is coming from and whether it is still accurate. This book was written several years ago, and though a few of her predictions have come true, the majority have not and the reader should keep this in mind if they desire a truly accurate, up-to-date picture of this crisis.I agree that this disease, and especially the plight of those in Africa, should be of serious concern to us in the USA. I do not think that this book is the best source of information about how to deal with this crisis, but rather a good snapshot of one person's opinion about who is to blame for it. One of the biggest downfalls of the book, in my opinion, is her use of generalizations and fictional characters.I highly recommend Helen Epstein's "The Invisible Cure" as she writes as an actual scientist with a much more scholarly approach, cites her sources more clearly, and presents some real data on programs that have (and haven't) actually worked in Africa. She also points the finger and leaves the reader with much to consider, but does so in a more credible way, with fewer generalizations and, I believe, much more real data and interviews to inform the reader. Thanks!

Synopsis: Familiarity with Western medicine, Asian doctors, and chiropractors have given me insight about medicine and health care is the U.S. Learning different philosophies and procedures made me think about health and how human bodies function. The Happy Planet index (www.ahappyplanet.com) about happiness worldwide implies there are major problems in the U.S. In Heal America, Heal Yourself, I focus on personal habits and the American health care system, what we can do about it, and how we can secure our own good health though personal actions and proactive care. We need to abandon the traditional mindset about our health and develop a better health insurance system. The book considers pandemic medical crises worldwide, which include the rapid increase of cancer, thyroid conditions, diabetes, and other infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. I point out what we can do to prevent and even reverse these conditions, as well as how to change the American health insurance system. Since I am originally from an Asian country, I see the major differences in the health insurance system and medical costs in the U.S. as excessive and frequently difficult to access. I reviewed his first novel over a year ago and gave it 4 stars. This one is even better. This story is full of its own big ideas, which is no small accomplishment. It picks up again right after the end of Plague Year, but Carlson does a good job of making this book work as it's own story, reintroducing my favorites Cam Najarro and Ruth Goldman -- as well as a bunch of new cool dudes and new threats galore. Most of the survivors in the world are still stuck above 10,000 feet elevation, barely hanging on after the machine plague, but Cam and Ruth have a vaccine nanotech that will allow people to walk below the barrier again, and everybody in the world wants it.Reading Plague War is like walking through a living game of chess with the heroes and villians all crashing together around you as they fight for the vaccine.I won't write any spoilers here, but once again the whole book is loaded with amazing stuff and a few major shocks. Frighteningly real. These books are made for the big screen. I bet a movie will come out soon. The Hoff

By Cynical Dude A fan of "Plague Year," I picked up "Plague War" last week- after a long anticipation- just before flying cross county... and I was not disappointed. It was the perfect way to escape the otherwise hectic runaround of balancing a fussy seven-month old baby girl, an inability to clear my ears, and the jerk in front of my jamming their seat as far back as possible.I was enraptured to find out more about what has become of the world after a year suffering under a machine plague that attacks and kills any living creatures of sufficient size. It's clear Mr. Carlson did his homework on a wide variety of issues- the impact such a plague would have on the environment (such as the prevalence of insects, and how vicious they would have become- something I would never have conceived of prior), the effects of the human body above 10,000 feet, the mechanics of nanotechnology, how the rest of the world reacted to the impending doom of the machine plague.I was vaguely disappointed in not finding out as much about other issues I considered, like what happened to the US Navy- I imagine the Fleet would have sortied, for instance, and they could have supplied themselves well enough to last a year at sea. Major US warships have excellent Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical protection, and could've sealed themselves airtight and modified the pressure inside the ships if necessary (the machine plague self destructs at atmospheric pressures above approximately 10,000 feet)- not to mention submarines. It would have played an interesting role in the war described in the book. All that could've taken another three hundred pages to go over, though. Heh. All in all, an excellent summer read. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed!

By ocmd Plague War, a mix of sci-fi, military adventure and political intrigue, is the second book in Jeff Carlson's post apocalyptic trilogy. The nightmarish landscape presents a chilling albeit believable picture of a world devastated by a nanotech plague. The book works as a standalone but to get the complete story of how our world got so screwed up you might want to start with Plague Year.Nanotechnology designed to fight cancer is accidentally released and has killed most of the world's population. The nano-plague, something like a flesh eating virus, freezes at elevations above 10,000 feet so the surviving population flees to the mountains.Dr. Ruth Goldman, a researcher, has produced a vaccine that will inoculate the survivors against the plague but the government won't release it because it doesn't benefit their own agenda. The U.S. government wants to use the vaccine as a tool to decide who will live. So Ruth is on the run, searching for survivors and hoping to inoculate as many as possible. Traveling with her is Cameron Najarro, a survivor from Sierra Nevada. But the government has their own plans for the vaccine and they'll stop at nothing to get to Ruth. Not surprisingly there is also a group of rebels who are interested in finding Ruth. But another catastrophic event is coming; one that may cause a war that will change things forever. This riveting and original tale paints a bleak picture of technology gone awry. There's plenty of action but this is essentially a character driven survival story. Carlson depicts the desperation of his heroes with great clarity. And the sexual tension between Ruth and Cam only adds to their despair. It's terrifyingly real and comes to a conclusion you won't see coming. A third book, Mind Plague, is out this month.

CHANCES ARE YOU ENCOUNTERED A medical assistant the last time you visited a physician. It could have been the person who scheduled your appointment, or whom you first met with in the exam room, asking routine questions while checking your vital signs. A medical assistant may have helped you with your bill or your prescription needs by calling or emailing the prescription into the pharmacist. Medical assistants are there to make sure you receive the best treatment possible. There are many opportunities for employment in today’s healthcare without undergoing the cost and training required to become a physician or nurse. A career as a certified medical assistant (CMA) stands out as an increasingly vital component in medical practice. Multi-skilled and versatile, medical assistants help care for people and improve productivity in a medical practice, while providing a human touch. Along with the numerous scientific advances that have occurred in medical care over the past century, many changes have also taken place in the way medical care is provided. Long gone are the private practitioners, who until the 1970s often made house calls. These dedicated physicians provided individual care and typically were aided by only a single nurse and sometimes a secretary in the office (although the nurse often handled those duties). With the introduction of managed care and other changes in the economics of healthcare, individual physician practices are disappearing. In their place are larger practices that typically include several doctors and a significant nursing and administrative staff. As a result, physician practices, from those focusing on general care, to specialists such as orthopedic surgeons and ophthal¬mologists, are turning to medical assistants in the interest of cost-effectiveness and efficiency. From assisting in running the office administratively to interacting with patients and helping with basic medical care, medical assistants with their wide range of skills are increasingly viewed as vital partners in caring for patients efficiently and effectively. Because of their versatility and enhanced training in recent years, medical assistants are becoming the allied health professionals of choice for a variety of healthcare settings. Medical assistants are members of a well-established profession and are in demand. An added benefit is that the typical training program requires only one- to two-years. There are also varied employment opportunities in addition to private practice, for example, in hospital departments, clinics, pharmacies, insurance companies, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings. This report will help you learn more about the career, from specific job duties and educational requirements, to the observations of medical assistants currently on the job. If you are looking for an important, exciting healthcare career, and like working with a wide variety of people, certified medical assistant may be the right choice for you.
