Skylar's death came not at the end, after a long fulfilling existence, not in the middle, as a result of an untimely tragic event--but at the beginning, with her birth. As a final effort to save her dying unborn child, Skylar's pregnant mother, a witch, sacrificed herself by invoking a powerful spirit shade to inhabit Skylar's body, imbuing her with life. For twenty-three years, Skylar lived a life of oblivion, content with her simple job, loving adoptive mother and the monthly inconvenience of a full moon hangover after being sedated and caged when she changed into a wolf. It wasn't exciting but it was her life until one night, she woke up in a strange room in the middle of rural Illinois--bruised and with jumbled memories of her mother's death from a vampire attack. The Midwest pack comes to her rescue. Known for being more ruthless than altruistic she doesn't know if she can trust them. But after an assassination attempt by a necromancer, an abduction attempt by a mercenary, and more aggressive and violent attacks by the vampires, she has no other choice but to accept their help. The Midwest pack quickly discover that Skylar is the host to a spirit shade, who gives her magical abilities, that make her as much of a danger as an asset and that she is the key to the vampires' plan to perform a ritual that will give them unrestricted power. Tension rises as the pack become divided between those who think her life is worth protecting as a potential ally and those who believe she is too dangerous to live. In the end, Skylar finds herself fighting for her life--a life that may be tragically taken too soon.

It was well written, very descriptive, and seemed like it was going to be your typical vampire/werewolf book that I have read a thousand times before: girl meets new world and conquers it with minimal effort; has the ability and skills to kick everyone's butt and master everything she encounters without any training, falls in love with the sexy mysterious stranger that has to have her, and they live happily ever after. Well, that definitely didn't happen in this book, and it was a nice change of pace. Skyler (not my favorite name) fumbled in the beginning, and just when I was beginning to get annoyed with her, she began to get tougher, smarter, and more likable. Her witty, sassy sense of humor made me laugh and her comical observations were a well needed relief to her bad situation. The characters were dark, but likable. I wasn't sure who to trust, and throughout the book I kept wondering who the good and bad guys/women were, and I loved that! I hate a generic/predictable story. I liked the chemistry between Skyler, Josh, and his brother Ethan. I couldn't decide which one I would rather have her end up with. I went back and forth a few times trying to decide if I wanted her to end up with the sexy witch or the ruthless wolf with questionable ethics. Most books, I can predict what will happen and they usually have a stock happy ending. Moon Tortured didn't give you that, but it offered a very satisfying read with an unexpected ending that left me wanting the next book to be available. And that's the point of a good series. It should leave you wanting more. I'm curious to find out what is next for Skyler. She's a werewolf that can do magic (which makes for a more multideminsional character, andI haven't seen that in many of the other werewolf books I have read) and is no longer under the radar of a pack that wants her as a member.Even if you like a tidy story that can be wrapped up in a single book, I suggest you give this a try. As I said, it was a nice change of pace. It was a good read and I plan to follow this series.

By Matthew Adams Meet Skylar, a beautiful and peacefully innocent young woman, in a beautifully peaceful and innocent life. She loves her adopted mother, she loves her boring little world, and if she’s a bit snarky it can be forgiven because, after all, her birth mother was a witch and the book launches off almost immediately with her beloved adopted mother being murdered by brutal vampires. Oh, and she herself is possessed by a spirit shade (the only means by which her hexy birth mother was able to save her life while dying in utero). Into this collision of worlds comes a pack of werewolves, a scheming necromancer, and of course a dark but unbrooding potential love triangle between Skylar and the brothers Josh & Ethan. As you follow along with Sky’s discovery of her true identity, powers, and the world into which she’s been plunged, what’s left to miss with such a set of dynamics? The answer is, surprisingly, very little! With a cast of solidly dark, cynically antiheroic characters and a heroine brimming with angst and sexual tension but too strong a personality to just tip over at the typical cues or temptations of the genre, McKenzie Hunter’s first book in the Sky Brooks Series is a fantastic read. The origin stories and character development are creative, the interplay of fantasy with realism keeps things grounded and believable (there aren’t any “oh come ON” beggar-belief moments to exasperate the reader), and the plot hinges on scenes of intense action with deeply emotional internal development for Skylar rather than on her potential love triangle. With a powerful female lead who refuses to be controlled by anyone, enemy or ally, and instead forges her own path and her own band of friends in a supernaturally shady world just to the left of our normal Starbucks and sunshine reality, Moon Tortured reads more akin to Buffy than Twilight, without feeling copied or tired in any way. This book is excellent, and will leave you very happy that there’s a series following it!Rating: 4 out of 5

D'Amico Moon Tortured is a very engaging and highly entertaining book. I read it on a recommendation and I was duly impressed. While it's not a genre I typically gravitate toward, I’m not entirely unfamiliar with the general themes of the book, and after decades of reading a variety of genres and a litany of authors, I feel I can reputably offer my thoughts on this book. My immediate thought when I finished Moon Tortured was that it was excellent. I can’t say it was better than I expected it to be because I didn’t know what to expect. It truly was a page turner for me, and I found myself eagerly awaiting the chance to get back to reading it every time I had to put it down. I was excited to get back into it to see what would happen next. The action is engaging, but even more appealing for me was the character interaction and the development of the story. I could empathize with the main character, Skylar Brooks, because she seemed to be discovering just as much about herself and those around her as I did page by page. Thus the book allowed, if not forced, me to invest myself into not only the variety of characters, but the exciting situations necessary to fully develop the story. Whether Hunter intended that or not, it certainly lent itself to a refreshing literary experience. While I knew going in that Moon Tortured is the first of a series, it could also work as a stand-alone story. But given the rich characters and the intricate story, it lends itself the potential to truly be a brilliantly fun and exciting series of books.Moon Tortured is a fairly rapid and un-daunting read in that it has a fairly straight forward and linear storyline. I found it to be exceptionally well-written with a very smooth and effortless flow. Hunter’s writing has a level of confidence, clarity, and polish that I wouldn't necessarily expect from a first-time author. The storyline at first glance had the potential to be cliché but I was pleasantly rewarded with a fresh concept and story arc that had me enthralled to the end. The characters are intriguing and well-developed, all having very unique yet robust personalities, idiosyncrasies, strengths, and flaws. While they may be archetypal, they are by no means obligatory or tired. I truly became invested in them, cared for them, and enjoyed watching them develop, rooting for some while loathing others. It’s a talented author that can elicit such emotions from characters on a page. Moon Tortured was truly a gem of a book and I eagerly look forward to future books in the series. With absolutely no hesitation I can highly recommend Moon Tortured and wish I could have assigned 4.5 stars.
