Like John Scalzi Intensely Dislike His Selling Off A Book A Few Chapters At A Time By Kindle Customer I enjoy reading John Scalzi, but I am upset with his technique of breaking a book down into episodes to extract more money than he would get from a single book. It irritates me enough that I probably will stop reading his works.I am particularly concerned that he may be starting a trend and, if so, I hope that Amazon steps in and puts a stop to it.

By Big Cal First and foremost John Scalzi... as an author... is GREAT!But... if I have to buy one of his books "one chapter at a time" again... I'm going to scream!I love his work, but the marketing ploy of... releasing-individual-chapters-as-a-"series"-just-so-you-can-charge-hardcover-prices-for-electronically-delivered-content... is simply taking advantage of your most loyal fans enthusiasm in the worst way.Boo... Hiss... "BAD marketing geek... NO BISCUIT!"

It's well-written (of course) and with a bit less snark than is the Scalzian norm. Which is appropriate, because this is the part where Things Get Challenging And A Desperate Plan Is Hatched. And yet ... things didn't really feel all that challenging and the desperate plan didn't really feel all that desperate. It was hard to feel the gravity of the situation because the story never really dwelled on it. The plot moved along and everybody was oh-so-confident in the face of adversity, which didn't really help convey much if any of an emotional tone. Scalzi's style of fast-moving plot and breezy dialog worked against him this time around. As was the case with Chapter 3, I felt a couple thousand words were missing. I'm fairly sure they were cut in order to move the plot along. Without giving spoilers, we missed a couple of key confrontations, where Our Heroes had to convince certain other individuals to agree to certain actions. The story zipped along without them ... to the detriment (I think) of the emotional tone.A solid story, told in four interesting and well-written acts. And yet, I can't help thinking it could have been a great story if the author could have down-shifted the plot from overdrive to a more sedate pace.
