9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. background By Christopher Bollas I was one of the three people to edit this work. DWW called this book his "Primer" and before he would go off to give a talk he would dip into it, sometimes for an hour or more, rather as if he had to get himself back into his own stream of consciousness. He never intended that it be published but those of us on the Winnicott Trust thought readers should have the opportunity to read his notebooks, I regret that perhaps we did not make this clear enough as, in my view, this is the core of Winnnicotts way of thinking.

White Winnicott, here, forays into an "anthropology" in this work, which is not always accurate, it seems to me, but well worth the read--because it is thought provoking and intellectually stimulating as are all of Winnicott's works. In many regards it provides a background for how Winnicott understood the human being, and how this understanding both arose from his counseling work and in turn influenced his theories of object-relations. If one is interested in the history of psychoanalysis, then this is a fascinating and beneficial book to read.
