By CWH1964 We've seen the beleaguered superhero done with Spider-Man and many successors. Spectrum carries on this tradition of a man who perseveres not because he is chosen or destined--but simply because he chooses to. The supporting cast is quite diverse and the action ranging from urban superhero combat to science fiction pulp-style is a treat. The only flaw I saw was that a plot in here could have been resolved in another sequel. Don't do too much at once.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Some Good, Some Not So Good By A Customer I think the author does a nice succinct and clear job of presenting the essence of object relations theory re couple conflicts. The book is quite weak, though, on technique ,i.e., how to actually use an object relations understanding to promote change. I also thought the author was too readily dismissive of other styles of couple interventions that can be used in conjunction with an OR view.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Much needed information By Vidalia11 The author gets to the essence of couples' problems using object relations theory. Without object relations, most psychotherapists stay on the surface of the couples' problems and don't truly understand the situation. That means they can't really help the couple except for putting some band-aids on their problems. This book should be a must-read for all couples counselors.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. At least you can learn a little more about OR... By K. F. Donovan's book unfortunately runs into the modern trap of "well, all therapies work according to the same basic principles of change." After a complex and sometimes incoherent exposition, which is much more theory than practice, he takes a wild turn into this rabbit hole of equivocation. Seriously, even if all therapies work according to the placebo effect, research still shows that therapies only work when rigorously applied. So if you are writing an OR book, stick to OR, and have at least one practical chapter. However, there are some great ideas in here making it necessary reading for anyone interested in OR. However, if one wants to get down to nuts and bolts, read the Scharffs instead--their article in the "Clinical Handbook of Couples Therapy" is worth three of these books.

About the Author David Gerrold was barely out of his teens when he wrote the script "The Trouble With Tribbles" for the classic television series "Star Trek". Nominated for a Hugo Award, it was listed by "Playboy" magazine as one of the 50 Greatest Television Episodes of All Time. And in a 1997 FOX TV special it ranked as the most popular science fiction episode on television of all time. He has written dozens of novels and twice has been nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula awards. His novelette "The Martian Child" won the SF triple crown: the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Locus Readers Poll as Best Novelette. In addition to novel writing, he has written television scripts for "Babylon 5", "Tales from the Darkside", and "The Twilight Zone". He served as a story editor/producer for the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". A frequent guest at SF conventions here and in Europe, he began a charity in 1988 in which money earned from charging one dollar for autographs -- plus profits from the sale of other SF memorabilia -- is donated to AIDS Project Los Angeles.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hmm. Price Has Risen To New Heights, Not So The Content. By Stephen Mann I'm not sure why, but this issue had an unannounced Young Adult tone in some of its new stories that may or may not have been deliberate, which seemed to my undemanding eyes a tad abrupt in style, a little clumsily crafted in places. No doubt this is a calumny of the worst stripe, and is merely my personal taste intruding, but that was the taste in my mouth after finishing this issue.Silverberg's reprint story was interesting, but mined a theme he'd used before in a couple of different contexts. Silverberg's work is something that if you have a taste for it, he rarely fails to deliver. This one had few surprises, though the premise was new and interesting.McDevitt's reprint story was thought-provoking, though I didn't engage with the characters as much as I usually do when reading his stuff. I have probably read this one before but didn't remember any details from that supposed prior reading.Elizabeth Bear's reprint story really saves the reprint part of the issue for me, an engaging tale told well that I hadn't encountered before. The serial is a new one (yay!) from a writing team I haven't sampled before (yay!) but features space-fairing Vampires (oh gawd) and a werewolf (oh gawd almighty). Is there truly any plot vein more overworked than Vampires and/or Werewolves? Is there any protagonist lamer than a Vampire? Why yes, there's the Werewolf. And I'm sorry to let personal bias get in the way of a review like this, but I cannot read any more tripe about Werewolves or Vampires. Mercedes Lackey's co-author here is introduced as a man barely out of (or perhaps still in) high school met by the author during an on-line role-playing game, but I could probably have guessed that. Only someone that young could still find these moth-eaten things interesting. Serial abandoned, at least for the time being, on account of it slathering on the Lame with a trowel. Maybe I'll come back to it, but don't hold your breath. Not a great addition to the growing collection of issues.

By John Shannonhouse This short story is truly amazing. I don't know how to describe it without spoilers. All I can say is that this story had a major emotional impact -- more than any other short story I have ever read.Life can be really hard for those who actually do something instead of just talking about it.

Since the very early stages of life, we all experience some form of stress. Stressors can be mild to severe and can range from unsuccessfully longing for maternal milk in infancy, to recklessly wiggling on a motorbike to be on time to watch the NBA finals on TV, to breaking up a relationship.

All those events that we call “stress” have the capability of perturbing a given state of psychological and physiological equilibrium and moving it to a different level. The transition from crawling to walking has to be considered a form of stress as much as losing a job.

It is through a continuous cross-talk between environmental stressors and individual adaptations that we build our personalities and our ways to cope with daily hassles. External challenges should not necessarily be regarded as “bad”, but instead seen as constructive forces forming our ability to navigate a changing world.

What is stress good for? What is stress bad for? When and why do we need to be “stressed”? Should we worry about stress? When does stress equate to “normality”? When does it turn into pathology? We hope with this book to provide some answers to these fundamental questions.

Review

From the reviews:

“This book explores the positive and negative effects of stress, using a developmental perspective from prenatal experiences through adolescence. It also examines animal models to see how rodents, primates, and birds adapt to stress early in development. … Both clinicians and researchers would benefit from this book. … This book is well written by an international collection of experts in the field and is full of research findings. Readers with a solid background in physiological psychology and ethology will find this book very interesting.” (Gary B. Kaniuk, Doody’s Book Reviews, July, 2013)

Quick done-in-one novella By Goddess of Chaos This is the third story from this series I have read, and while there are strong plot similarities, each one delivers a quick light read with a strong, loving male lead who believes in his strong woman and her right to be free/independent and stand on her own 2 feet... though he would prefer she let him have her back.I think I am glad I have not read any 2 stories on the same night, as that might make each feel a bit less entertaining.

The idea was interesting even though it had holes (where did all the maids come from if there were a shortage of women). I thought it was sweet but incomplete.Mature content

I would love to see this series fleshed out (pun not intended). I can't wait for more from this series and hope that they are more detailed and developed.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. background By Christopher Bollas I was one of the three people to edit this work. DWW called this book his "Primer" and before he would go off to give a talk he would dip into it, sometimes for an hour or more, rather as if he had to get himself back into his own stream of consciousness. He never intended that it be published but those of us on the Winnicott Trust thought readers should have the opportunity to read his notebooks, I regret that perhaps we did not make this clear enough as, in my view, this is the core of Winnnicotts way of thinking.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not an easy read, but worth the work By Rev. John D. White Winnicott, here, forays into an "anthropology" in this work, which is not always accurate, it seems to me, but well worth the read--because it is thought provoking and intellectually stimulating as are all of Winnicott's works. In many regards it provides a background for how Winnicott understood the human being, and how this understanding both arose from his counseling work and in turn influenced his theories of object-relations. If one is interested in the history of psychoanalysis, then this is a fascinating and beneficial book to read.

In the far future, a young man stands on a barren asteroid. His ship has been stolen, his family kidnapped or worse, and all he has on his side is a semi-intelligent spacesuit. The only member of the crew to escape, Hari has barely been off his ship before. It was his birthplace, his home and his future. He's going to get it back.McAuley's latest novel is set in the same far-flung future as his last few novels, but this time he takes on a much more personal story. This is a tale of revenge, of murder and morality, of growing up and discovering the world around you. Throughout the novel we follow Hari's viewpoint, and as he unravels the mysteries that led to his stranding, we discover them alongside him. But throughout his journeys, Hari must always bear one thing in mind.Nobody is to be trusted.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Solid sf with a touch of Vance By DJL Partway through my reading of this very good novel by one of sf's excellent writers, I felt the aura of Jack Vance with his wry humor and character descriptions. I've read McAuley's other novels in his Quiet War sequence and have enjoyed all of them. To me, it appeared that McAuley stretched out the ending, making that the weak point of this book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Evening's Empires left me disappointed By Charlie Watanabe First, Paul McAuley is one of my favorite authors, and 'The Quiet War' is one of my favorite contemporary space operas. However, Evening's Empires left me disappointed.I have read only the first two ('The Quiet War' and 'Gardens of the Sun'). This story is set in the richly woven 'Quiet War' universe, about 15 centuries after The Quiet War. Its a bit of a coming-of-age story for the main character Hari, a young man in the asteroid belt and Saturn orbit; part of a down-on-its-heels solar civilization. The beginning of the story starts strong. It vaguely reminded me of 'True Grit', by Charles Portis. However, I missed something, like a whole novel or maybe as many as three novels. Major plot elements of a story or stories I'm not aware of intrude into this novel. This leads to digressions and repetitions that drag heavily on the story.A major premise also broke-down early for me. When I first started reading, I thought only about a century had passed since The Quiet War. The story postulates that more than a millennium had passed. As rich as the Quiet War universe is, this story did support that. For example, technologically things had not changed much at all since The Quiet War, despite at least two 'Golden Ages'. The author's imagination failed to span the centuries to my mind. It was just too 22nd Century. Finally, characters also had a strange way of appearing and disappearing in the story. Some of them, quiet likeable and worthy of development have the longevity of a Mayfly in spring. So, I was left disappointed. This story would have been a great novella, set about a century after The Quiet War. As a chase across the solar system amongst the ruins of a centuries old solar civilization, it fall flat.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another fine romp By DickStanley. McAuley's whole Quiet War series has been an entertaining exercise in world-building that just might come true someday in the outer solar system. Far more likely than journeys to the stars at slower-than-light-speed. Or FTL via magical means. The young Hari of Evening's Empires is an engaging protagonist for a space opera blended with hard science, and his digital world, for all its problems with piracy, religious fanaticism and recession, is an appealing one. We can hope this latest tale, with its multiple references to the previous In The Mouth of The Whale, is not the end of the series. As, indeed, the last few lines indicate it will not be.

BBW Prisoner + Sexy Alien With An Urge To Mate = Scorching Hot Romance! Melody woke up slowly, as if she had to swim through molasses. She was laying on something hard, and for some reason her neck, wrists, and ankles were cold. She looked around the eerily pristine, gleaming metal room cautiously and quietly called, “Hello? Is anyone there?” She stared at the mirror on the other side of the room. At first, there was no answer. And then, after almost a full minute, a voice like nothing Melody had ever heard spoke, radiating from the ceiling. Like the buzzing of a fly and the digital hum of an old dial-up modem, the voice said, “Undress.” It was utterly impassive and cold. “What?” Melody demanded, startled. “No!” There was no hesitation. As soon as the word left her lips, there was pain. Electricity lanced through her, coming from the cuffs and collars. Her back arched in agony and she screamed. Her knees buckled and she spilled across the floor in a heap. And just like that, the pain stopped. For a few seconds, she stayed on the ground, muscles still twitching. She pushed herself up with trembling arms until she was kneeling on the chilly floor. She lifted her head to stare at the mirror. “Remove your clothing,” the voice spoke again, still impassive and unchanged. This content contains hot romance with some scorching sex scenes, adult language and possible violence. ---- Tags: Alien Romance, Alien Abduction Romance, Romance, Alien Invasion Romance

I think this is the second one in the alien romance series from this author and I’m starting to really like this series. Though short, the author chose to keep the readers hooked from the beginning by avoiding too many details about how Melody gets into the whole trouble of being abducted and then auctioned off by these ruthless aliens. The pace is steady, not fast and the characters were properly introduced. Melody’s character was okay but it was Garon’s character that I particularly admired. The mysterious, handsome alien who was destined to be a part of Melody’s life. Or I guess I should say quiet and didn't talk to her much. He did rescue her though. I enjoyed reading about Melody too...she was fiery and definitely a strong character. Enjoyed the book.

Mix of science fiction, romance and BDSM By amf0001 This book is an odd mix of genres - science fiction, romance and BDSM.The published blurb is incorrect. We meet the crew of the spy ship Krastos. Tom is initially interested in Becca, but she doesn't return the favor, instead she gets upset with him when he voices what he considers to be his very reasonable and considered reservations about their fellow crew member Da'shay, the crazy alien Genta who gets on his nerves. Of course, everyone gets on Tom's nerves, he's naturally inclined to be suspicious and distrusting, but Da'shay is definitely odd, even by Genta standards. And so a very unusual relationship begins. Tom acts foolishly, his captain is furious with him, Becca upset and Da'shay seems... well she doesn't seem to take his mistake in the way it was intended. And lots of action follows - they are trying to figure out why their last job went so disastrously wrong, Tom is trying to figure out Da'shay is up to, and Da'shay is trying to find the words that scurry like mice through her brain. There was also some very hot bdsm scenes, that felt totally believeable, and some nice payback for villains and exonerations for beings who weren't as villainous as we first thought. This is an expensive eBook, I paid $8.77 and it's 6609 locations, so a shortish book- 200 pages? but it is a dense book, with lots going on and I was happy to find it and rate it a keeper and reread. It's the second book of Lyn Gala's that I've read, and she has become an author to watch out for.

By Angela S Goodrich I’ve mainly read Gala’s M/M sci-fi romances, with Turbulence being the only M/F romance of hers that I’ve read prior to Blowback. So I was excited to read this book. In fact, I was anticipating reading it so much that I waited until the review was due to read it because I wanted it to last as long as possible because once I finished it, I had no idea how long I would have to wait for another of Gala’s sci-fi romances. I am both kicking my own metaphorical arse for not enjoying Blowback sooner, while at the same time, basking in the afterglow of a story that was so worth the wait that the anticipation was worth it.This is not your typical romance and not because there are aliens involved. The animosity and distrust Tom has for Da’shay is so strong, you feel it through the pages. When a mission goes bad and a “concerned” party approaches Tom with information about Da’shay that reinforces his ill-feelings toward her, he does the wrong thing for the right reason and ends up having to choose between charges of treason or death. Once he makes peace with his choice, Da’shay steps in and prevents his death, leaving Tom bewildered as he’s made no secret of his feelings toward her. After a series of events ends up with Tom being relegated to slave status with Da’shay claiming ownership of him, Tom’s dislike ratchets up to hate as he tries to figure out whether to kill Da’shay or himself. But when Tom is forced to listen to Da’shay and really hear what it is she is trying to say, his opinion of her takes a 180 and the woman he would have taken pleasure in killing, is now the woman he wants to make happy. But with war looming and Tom, Da’shay and the crew of the Kratos finding themselves smack dab in the middle of it and a possible conspiracy, can Tom trust his newfound faith in Da’shay and his need to protect her outside of the ship, while submitting to her in the bedroom?I loved this book. Not to spoil the story, but due to a procedure that was performed on Da’shay, her pattern of speech is not normal – not even for a genta. The way she talks in riddles reminded me of the Firefly character, River Tam. As Firefly was one of my favorite television shows, I loved how Da’shay’s character was reminiscent of River – although as the book was written before the television show was aired, it should be the other way around, but I “knew” River first. Once I learned to speak Da’shay’s language, it was much easier to understand what she was trying to communicate. Even though Tom was basically forced to listen to Da’shay, I liked that once she finally got through to him, he was willing to reassess the situation and his feelings toward her changed – for the better. I’m sure that the fact the sex between the two of them was scorchingly hot did not hurt his position one bit. I’m not big on the whole submissive male storyline, but I loved it in Blowback and felt like Gala did an excellent job of balancing Tom’s alpha male tendencies outside of the bedroom, with his willingness to submit to Da’shay inside the bedroom. Blowback was an excellent sci-fi romance with just the right amount of action, intrigue, and erotica that kept me glued to my Kindle.I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!

Well, okay, the main character Tom in this book seems to be just like Jane from the movie Serenity (aka TV show Firefly). Tom is similar to Jane in that he is a shoot first and ask questions later kind of guy. Tom is a simple man. Anything too complicated isn't his cup of tea. He is a man who will follow orders only if he agrees with the one giving orders. What he doesn't like is a half breed alien who makes no sense and he figures she's a danger to his entire crew, especially his captain. This blue skin beyotch is Da'shay. Da'shay is unable to communicate effectively. In some ways, she talks like River in Serenity. Except Da'shay is a better written character. The characters in this book are really well done. I liked them, even anti-hero Tom. What I also enjoyed is the sexual slavery undertones and the Femdom. This is very nice as somehow, Tom ends up as Da'shay's slave. This is why the book is not rated higher--jarring transitions. There are some pieces to this story that are not well connected. Some of the scenes, specifically when Tom gets into trouble that make absolutely no sense to me. It is frustrating because this world is kept tantalizingly vague.I understand the point is that we are as lost and clueless as Da'shay is in her mind. At one point, one would think some of the unanswered questions would finally be resolved. This is not the case. With no sequel apparently on the horizon, readers will feel frustration, similar to those who liked Firefly when the show ended prematurely. I do not like premature action. Hopefully Ms. Gala will return to this world and give us more. For example, what is a Diamond? I am dying to know. There is so much mystery surrounding Da'shay which is hinted at but never fully confirmed. With the ending to this story rushed to a closure, I'm left hanging. It is like a strong building climax that is suddenly ruined right as I'm about to go over the edge. Hopefully Ms. Gala will provide a satisfying sequel or a tasty trilogy. This space opera is recommended to sci-fi fans who also enjoy a bit of female domination.

How do the analyst's consciously held theoretical commitments intersect with the actual conduct of analysis? Do commitments to notions like "psychic truth" or "analytic neutrality" affect interpretive style, the willingness to acknowledge treatment mistakes, and other pragmatic preferences? Does the commitment to cerain comcepts entail commitment to related ideas and practices to the exclusion of others?

This is the uncharted domain that Victoria Hamilton explores in The Analyst's Preconscious.  At the heart of her endeavor is an imaginatively conceived empirical investigation revolving around in-depth interviews with 65 leading analysts in the United States and Britain.  In these lively and free-ranging discussions, the reader encounter firsthand the thoughtfulness with which practitioners wrestle with the ambiguous relations between various theoretical positions, whether or not their own, and the exigencies of the therapeutic encounter.

The result is a uniquely detailed map of contemporary psychoanalysis.  Hamilton documents the existence of different analytic cultures, each shaped by a need to maintain inner consistency among fundamental assumptions and also by extratheoretical factors, including geography, collegial experiences, and exposure to particular teachers and supervisors.

A major contribution to understanding the pluralism of contemporary psychoanalysis, The Analyst's Preconscious is also a celebration of the dedication and sensitivity with which contemporary analysts seek to organize their therapeutic practices amidst the welter of proliferating concepts and rival schools of thought.  Coming at a critical juncture in the history of the field, this work is indispensable to all who care about psychoanalytic culture and psychoanalytic practice, and especially about the analyst's real-world adaptation to the theoretical turbulence of our time.

Review

"The Analyst's Preconscious is the most innovative book on psychoanalytic theory in print today. Victoria Hamilton adots a totally new perspective on the understanding of psychoanalytic theories and, in so doing, provides an enlightening commentary on the evolution of psychoanalytic ideas.  Her grasp of psychoanalytic theory is breathtaking, and her book makes an essential companion to any course that aims to convey that theory in a comprehensive way.  At the same time, it will provide all practitioners with profound insights into the ways in which their learning translates into the styles and strategies of everyday clinical work."

- Peter Fonagy, Ph.D., University College, London

"Early on in my reading of Victoria Hamilton's The Analyst's Preconscious, I became astonished that nobody had written on this subject before.  One reason may be: What an enormous amount of work! Hamilton's rigor, fairmindedness, and clarity are exemplary, and her very readable interviews provide the best view I can imagine of how analysts really think about what they do.  Though this was undoubtedly not part of Hamilton's intention, her book is a tribute to her profession."

- Marcia Cavell, Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley

"Victoria Hamilton succeeds in getting right into the minds of analysts of different persuasions, and in demonstrating the great and often unexpected differences in the way they approach their work.  This is a beautifully written, fascinating, and highly stimulating account of a major research project, the results of which will undoubtedly demolish many cherished ideas about the different schools of psychoanalysis and the ways in which different practitioners structure their analytic technique."

- Joseph Sandler, Ph.D., University of London

Palombo Victoria Hamilton has done a superb piece of research on contemporary psychoanalytic thought. Under her skilled analysis, questionaires and interviews with 65 analysts of varying theoretical persuasion in Great Britain and the United States yield fascinating insights into the relation of psychoanalytic theory and technique. Hamilton has an unerring eye for the real issues underlying theoretical differences. She is able to show that most analysts know more about the variety of issues that arise inevitably in the therapeutic relationship than their theoretical loyalties allow them to conceptualize. The serious limitations of current clinical theory appear clearly as she demonstrates that when analysts approach the clinical situation from different angles, their practical concerns often converge in unexpected ways. Nevertheless, she shows that a residue of serious differences remains in some analytic approaches. Her book makes an excellent case for the pluralistic approach she herself advocates.
