The outcome of doing this correctly is exciting: happiness, love, fulfillment and career success. When we don't know how to take advantage of the relational world, in an authentic way, we often struggle in life and career. Greg has written the best book I know of which gives the reader the insights and skills in being intentional about taking advantage of the organic opportunities that life provides, in order to be open to getting to know someone. It might be the person sitting next to you on the plane and it might be dinner with your neighbor. But the Coil (Greg's metaphor for this structure) produces amazing results. I have used his material and it truly works. It is much more profound and relational than networking. It is simply being aware and open to get to know people, and to see where those conversations lead one. Monday About two weeks before getting my copy of The Coil, I was on a flight from San Francisco to Chicago on business. I boarded in an early group, and as I sat in my seat while others boarded, I had my eyes on my magazine but my ears tuned to those around me. I quickly realized a large group of folks in adjoining row were all salesforce.com employees, embarking on an off-site meeting. You see, our companies use salesforce.com religiously. "What luck," I thought to myself. "Here's a chance to get some good information on one of our most important vendors!"I proceeded to sit there, reading my magazine, never taking the simple yet critical next step of opening the dialog with these fellow travelers.Greg Campbell's concise and inspiring book does what only the best business books do: compel the reader to act.A few weeks after my salesforce.com fail, I read The Coil, and since then have committed myself to intentionally following its principles. Within days I had lunch with a member of my "coil" with whom I've not connected in years. We quickly found common ground over a medical struggle each of our children share, and just taking time to encourage each other about this personal issue did wonders for me, and hopefully the same for him.So do yourself a favor: take an hour or two and read this book. But don't stop there. Start following Greg's encouraging principles and I think you, like me, will discover an area of your professional and personal life that desperately deserves your attention.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must Read Book! By Grant Duncan Greg's wisdom about how to build connections and relationships is profound. He cuts through the tension of how some people think of networking as a 'dirty' word - the coil goes beyond networking to look at relationships more holistically. The coil is a mindset and a perspective you should incorporate in daily life to enrich both the personal and professional world. This world is interconnected and we must take the intentional effort to be curious and self-aware. He encourages us take the risk to ask the off-the-wall question and see what may come of it. Probably some small (or big) positive outcome.I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to understand to build better relationships and have a more meaningful and enriching life. Bonus: it's a quick read - 77 pages!
