Navigating through the residency application and process of figuring out what works is daunting. I'm so glad somebody finally wrote a book from the perspective of a medical student. It was EXTREMELY helpful to have advice from med students of different backgrounds and academic records. Hearing stories from people who have been through the process of residency applications and interviews, from an unbiased and straightforward point-of-view, was one of the main reasons I was able to match to my top choice for residency. If you're applying to residency this year, this book is a GEM.

I used it as a fourth year medical student to guide me through the application and interview process and I cannot even begin to describe how helpful it was. How to make your program lists, advice on interview day like what to wear, hard questions you might encounter, how to approach the pre-interview reception, making your rank list, etc. I wish it was available when I was in my first year of medical school! Also includes anecdotes and info on surviving the basic science courses, what actually matters in medical school (grades, extracurriculars, research, etc.) Funny as well as informative. Truly a must have for every medical student.

I think many Med students come in with the misconception that they will be able to easily find their dream job By Nicholas Ulrich The Med School landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade. I think many Med students come in with the misconception that they will be able to easily find their dream job. While not as bad as the Legal Profession, things have gotten more difficult as Med School has become more global and recruits the best of the best. Some of your future peers may disagree, but I digress. It takes some forward looking to navigate around downstream hazards. "Medical School and the Residency Match" does a great job of helping Med students get well ahead of their peers. Since it is written by matriculated students, there is a great amount of insight, call-outs, and watch-outs. I would strongly recommend people take a look at this far in advance of their graduation date. It will help shape how one approaches the following years.
