COLES WRITES WITH VERACITY, WITH A DELICIOUS STREAK OF SUBVERSION.”STEVEN ERIKSON, New York Times bestselling author of Gardens of the Moon Lieutenant Katja Emmes is assigned to the fast-attack craft Rapier, joining a mission to investigate weapons smuggling activity between the Terran colonies of Sirius and Centauria. If true, this act of rebellion could escalate rapidly, and lead to all-out war. When combat does erupt, its ferocity stuns the Terran forces, and pushes them to their limits. It tests the abilities of Lieutenant Emmes, as well, along with Sublieutenant Jack Mallory and Lieutenant Commander Thomas Kane, commanding officer of the Rapier. But failure is not acceptable. They must defeat the enemy... by whatever means necessary. “PULSE-POUNDING MILITARY SCIENCE FICTION FROM A NEW MASTER OF THE GENRE.”WILLIAM C. Virtues of War (The Astral Saga), by Bennett R. Coles Review “Tough-minded and distinctive” - Blogcritics"A fast paced and action packed story that actually had me wanting to read more after finishing the novel. Also, his characters aren’t just remakes of past hero templates. Katja and the rest of the Rapier crew are become real and believable through Coles writing and, as a reader, I was quickly drawn into her journey from novice to hero." - Atomic Moo"Engaging, imaginative in scope, and perhaps even relevant." - Examiner.com"Fantastic space war action, mixed with seemingly current day thoughts." - Destiny Falls"If you are someone who enjoys thrilling military action, fast-paced chaos or are a fan of military science fiction, then this is the book for you." - Geek Hard "High-energy, high-velocity, high-tech, throbbing with explosive action." - The Blood Shed "Talk about hitting the ground running. Coles doesn’t pull any punches. There’s no glamorization of war or battle – what this story provides is a clear and intelligent depiction of human beings and all the coping mechanisms that they develop to deal with the trauma and stress that can result from war. The fast-moving pace of the story is terrific and makes it an absolute pleasure to read." -Impedimenta"By the end of the book, I found myself not wanting to put it down." - Pop Kernal"The writing itself caught my interest and kept my eyes solidly on each page from start to finish. If you are a fan of solid military themed science fiction, this one is a great read" - Science Fiction.com

It features an interesting plot, a well told story line, and well developed characters. Lastly, important for a military science fiction novel, both the science and the military action are believable. The plot is basically a "coming of age" type of plot where a relatively young female officer in her empire's space navy begins her rise to greater skill and recognition. The story is well told and the officer's increased prominence is not exaggerated. The main character is no super-hero and her development is within the bounds of reality. The space battles are interesting and suspenseful and the characters involved in the actions are believable and engaging. The author has military experience and it shows. One slight aspect of the book that I found a little off-putting, however, is the complete self-centeredness of most of the professional officers in this military. Almost to a man/woman they are focused more on their own personal advancement and personal interests than the success of their nation, service, ship/unit, or crewmates. Frequently throughout the book this misplaced loyalty results in severely adverse results. Perhaps that's the author's intention: to show the negative consequences of such behavior. But such widespread counter-productive behaviors do not correspond to anything that I'm familiar with in modern militaries for precisely that reason. But overall the book was well-written and very interesting. I'll definitely buy a sequel.

Gritty, first rate fiction By James O'Hare Two things elevate this book above many others in the genre: the author's obvious military experience and his creation of engaging characters. Moreover, the novel is founded on a cutting edge, but credible, scientific theory. The battle scenes are both thrilling and convincing. They bespeak a writer who knows what he's talking about when it comes to tactics, hardware and combat unit dynamics. He does employ a bit of artistic license to enliven the action (artificial gravity on the ships; the unlikely use of tracer rounds in close quarters spacecraft encounters, etc.) These minor departures from physics, however, in no way diminish the story. The characters are effectively developed and the reader is soon drawn into their lives. What particularly impressed me is that the author avoids neat and tidy resolutions to their personal dilemmas. Life is often messy, and the author acknowledges this reality rather than opting for the expected literary conclusion. You will be surprised, and sometimes dismayed, at the turn of events. While the novel explores the brutal reality of war, it also conveys the moral ambivalence which underlies any human conflict. The ruthless enemy is not simply a black-hatted gunnery target. He is impelled by motives and circumstances that can claim a legitimacy of their own. This is one of the best military sci-fi books I've ever read and I eagerly await the next installment of the saga.

By Man in the Middle I was initially intrigued by the title "Virtues of War", as war is not often described as having virtues. Perhaps its use here is a reference to the 2004 book of the same name about the rise of Alexander the Great The Virtues of War (which I've not read yet.). Wikepedia comments about that book as follows: "Throughout the novel, Alexander is portrayed as a benevolent king who only ever wanted to be a soldier, attain military glory, and treat his enemies with honor in the hopes of eventually making them his friends." Having now read the Astral Saga book of the same name, it occurs to me that the story of Lt. Katja Emmes and of Sublt. Jack Mallory could be summed up in much the same way, except that neither of them is yet in charge of all that much by the end of this volume, which is apparently the first volume in a trilogy to be published over the next two years.I particularly liked the characters of both Katja and Jack, and that their relationships are professional and friendly, rather than romantic. Two other main characters are obviously out for whatever they can get, no matter who else gets hurt. One of them was humbled by the end of the volume, and here's hoping the other will be in a future volume as both their stories also continue. The book does a good job of explaining how a major war can erupt from what at first seems a minor incident, and realistically shows the characters growing in their roles and experience. I particularly liked that Jack was able to think outside the box and come up with new solutions, plus get those considered by highers up. I also like that Jack is living with scars and disappointments, but not defeated by them. Similarly, Katja starts out small in stature, with "famous daddy" issues, but her efforts grow in importance over time, both getting her in trouble, and helping the mission. By the end of this volume, Katja has proven her apple hasn't fallen far from the tree, and perhaps she'll hear praise from her dad in a future volume. For those who like hard science, the book makes a strong effort to realistically describe the science behind its faster-than-light travel and how that affects related topics such as stealth ships. The culture of the opposition is well-described, and given its own virtues, such as environmentally sustainable development and heavy use of robotics. It is realistically allowed to win battles, setting up a multi-book story between a future Earth and some of its colonies. As usual in real wars, sometimes civilians don't fare well, and characters make hard decisions. I'm not sure I could have made some of them, but can't fault their logic in doing so, especially the resulting unpleasant consequences for them personally.I'm not happy to have to wait another full year to see how the story continues, but expect I'll be eager to continue reading when it does.
