Wizard scouts are the elite, deep-recon forces of the Intergalactic Empire. They are a mix of technology and magic like abilities. Richard has been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become one of these legendary soldiers. All he has to do is make it through the Wizard Scout Academy. But with a TAC officer who hates his guts, will he even be allowed to graduate. To make matters worse, the Empire has been attacked and soon finds itself in a major war. With heavy losses in the wizard scout corps, even the Academy cadets are starting to look good to the Empire's High Command. Just when Richard thinks things can't get any worse, he is suddenly sent by 'the One' to help a beautiful elf priestess fight a demon and its army of undead. Wizard scouts may be the best of the best, but Richard is still a cadet in training. Will his skills and technology be enough to overcome dragons, demons, trolls, ghouls, and various undead from his worst nightmare? With only the aid of his battle computer, Nickelo, and the magic of an elf priestess, will his wizard scout abilities be enough to turn the tide? With the fate of two galaxies riding in the balance, Richard is honor bound to do his best in spite of the odds. The question is, will his best be good enough?

He starts out as a mature tough marine that has survived combat, witnessed the death of his comrades and is undergoing extreme training with very little complaint. He is highlighted as having strong combat abilities and demonstrates adaptive thinking when confronted with impossible scenarios. Then for some unknown reason it all goes downhill when he gets his combat armor and battle computer and is sent on his first mission. He becomes a whiny adolescent that needs constant babying from his AI computer. He becomes as dense as lead, somehow not being able to think logically though the simplest scenarios. It appears that all his years and experience as a marine just disappears. He is belligerent and whines about everything. He get supplied with amazing weapons, specially made for him and again whinges that they're not high tech enough. He disobeys his orders just because he is upset about where he was sent to for his mission and how he was sent there. The main character constantly uses "Whatever" as a statement. This statement is used indiscriminately and often throughout the book which just ends up being annoying and detracts from the story.Started out with such promise.....What happened?

I really wish I could read that book they reviewed. I found this book okay but not groundbreaking. The protagonist was very immature, especially considering he was a veteran of over a year of combat. He seemed determined to not learn anything and argued with anyone who actually tried to help him while following all instructions of the one man who apparently hates his guts. I also found the focus on "twentieth century" tech and language to break immersion. It seems that the hero and his a.i. were both from 2004 not the far future. Lastly the constant misuse (typo?) of "opps" instead of "oops" was very annoying.Yes a combo of Starship Troopers and D&D would be great. This is not it. I wish the main character had half the heart/mind/soul of Johnny Rico. He comes off as a spoiled Gen X'er.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Very good mix of science and magic with a good story. By Allen M. I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. Amazon eats a lot of my spare change. Some books show you right away with a sample that they are not worth the purchase but Kindle unlimited has put a lot more books in my range that I probably wouldn't have touched. this is not one of them. I was interested by the premise. Few have mixed magic and science successfully, most of them great authors. Mr Hartman has put together a plausible world that uses both elements together in what I think is an original mix. The main character is a little simple for my taste but the reasoning behind his behavior is well laid out. The plot is well laid out and the book is obviously the first in a series. There are several seemingly divine manipulations that I am sure are part of the larger scheme of things but they were a tad frustrating for the story.Heh, managed that with no overt spoilers. I'm going to put this author on my watch list. I think his book is great and will look for the next.
