"BREAKWATER was a twisty, come-out-swinging book that really propelled this series and its characters forward in a big way. The first installment revolved around the Earth Elementals which by their very definition made them less alien than the Undine so, in volume 2, Shannon Mayer was able to fully let her creative cat (Peta) out of the bag by initiating readers to the secrets of the Deep."-Rabid ReadsFrom HiJinks Ink Publishing and Shannon Mayer comes BREAKWATER (Book 2) in The USA Today Bestselling ELEMENTAL SERIES. With over 1 million books sold, Shannon Mayer proves once again she can dominate her genre right out of the gate."My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental."My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen. As an Ender, one of my father's Elite guards, it's my job to do as I'm told. When my older sister is sent as an ambassador to the realm of the water elementals--the Deep--I have no choice but to accompany her as her bodyguard. With the death of the water elemental's King, a deadly battle for the throne begins; a battle we are forced to choose sides in.There are only a few things I know for sure. The ocean may be beautiful, but lurking in its depths are monsters to fear, the water I tread is teaming with danger and I am on my own. With no one to help, and no one to trust, I have to find a way to keep my sister safe, and stop a civil war.But the secrets within the Deep are far darker than any of us realized.Welcome . . . welcome to the Deep.

By Patti McBride Having read all of the Rylee Adamson novels and Recurve, the first in the Elemental Series, I was on pins and needles waiting for Break Water to be released. As usual, Shannon Mayer does not disappoint. I find that Ms. Mayer has this amazing ability to draw you completely into her characters' world as if you were part of the story. Her characters continue to grow and develop, show their faults and build on their strengths. The action scenes are very well written, so much so that I have no problem "seeing" and "believing" everything that is occurring to our heroine, her friends and adversaries. The relationships and plot lines between her characters are filled with love, hate, tragedy, triumph, and every emotion, conflict and resolution that can be imagined. And believe me, Ms. Mayer has one heck of an imagination. The only fault that I can find is that the books are way too short for my liking, as Ms. Mayer always leaves me wanting more! I cant wait for the next installment, which means I will probably reread all of the Rylee books in anticipation of Book 10, while waiting for Book 3 in the Elemental series. One final note: I do recommend that you read Recurve prior to Break Water to have a better understanding of the characters, their relationships and the back story.

Not even a full day, and I am completely through another Shannon Mayer book. And I'm not reading fast, not skimming like I do with textbooks. I'm actually *reading,* like for comprehension. And what I comprehend is that Larkspur is a far more complex character than Rylee. She is strong and powerful, yet she is broken and vulnerable. She struggles to learn how to harness her powers, learn to tap into her connection to the Earth, and to use her connection to Spirit without it killing her. She wants to be loved by her father, but feels comfortable in her position as an Ender. She is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum, but boy is it fun to watch her try to figure herself out.The book is expertly written, slightly sensual at times, and as with all of her books, throughly exciting and enjoyable. If you have read any of the Rylee Adamson series and enjoyed it, you will love this second installment of the Elemental series. Can't wait for the saga to continue!

By Bay Reader There's a reason I've read all of the Rylee Adamson books, beginning with Priceless, and am now hooked on the Elemental series. It's because this author never fails to pull me into the story and keep me interested in what's happening until the end. So when I received an email from amazon that Breakwater was available, I went right to their site and bought it, and then read it in one day.In Breakwater, Larkspur continues her journey of self-discovery. She learns more about her power as an elemental, and the burden that makes her different. At the same time, she struggles to understand her place within her family, and to prove she has value. Lark is sent on a mission by her father, the king, to act as guardian to her sister, find a missing ambassador of the elementals, and gather what information they can. She's forced to re-evaluate her loyalties and make decisions that could prove disastrous when those she thought she could trust, and those she thought she couldn't, suddenly make her doubt whose side they're really on.If you like a fast-paced read that's action driven, characters you will love (for their pluck and integrity) and hate (because the villains are really nasty) Breakwater won't let you down. **Note: If you haven't read the first book in this series you will want to read it first so you have the background. You won't regret reading this series.**
