If you took Lord of the Rings, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Alice in Wonderland and the Bhagavad Gita and put them in a blender, the odds are that you would not end up with this book. But perhaps something like it.Part fantasy, part surreal comedy, and part spiritual coming of age adventure, Real Dragons is a story related by an alien to an Earth child as they travel to our planet. He tells her of his first mission here in the fourteenth century when he was sent by his master to find the last seed of the microvita tree, whose mysterious power had the potential to transform our world. The microvita tree was destroyed in the sinking of Atlantis long ago, and only an evil necromancer and Joe, the last dragon from Atlantis, know how to find it. One problem. The dragon eats people.

From the Inside Flap Long ago a great master from another world appeared on our planet and planted a magical tree on the island of Atlantis, the microvita tree. The subtle microvita energy from the tree gave the Atlanteans special powers of mind, raising them above other peoples, enabling the birth of a great empire. But the true value of the tree lay in its hidden promise.  When it blossoms, after hundreds of years, it releases a flood of spiritual energy that will transform the planet, ushering in a golden age of enlightened consciousness. However, as the tree grew, an evil necromancer, Nefarious, began to manipulate the mysterious microvita energy for his own dark purposes. Using its power he bred new species, ultimately spawning the great and terrible dragons, the ultimate weapon of war, thus setting the idyllic kingdom on the path to its own destruction. Our story opens thousands of years later, in a time when the age of Atlantis is a near forgotten dream, and civilization has stagnated, mired in ignorance and conflict. But not all have forgotten the promise of the microvita tree. Far away on his home planet, the master still lives, and turns his attention to the suffering of a world in need, sending an emissary on a secret mission to re-awaken the power of positive microvita on the earth.

From the Back Cover In Book One of The Microvita Tree, the intrepid Doctor Dogalogue travels to Earth in the fourteenth century to recover the last remaining seed of the microvita tree in the long-submerged ruins of Atlantis. If he can find the seed and replant it, this magical tree when it blossoms will release a flood of spiritual energy that will transform the planet, ushering in a golden age of enlightened consciousness. But the only ones who know how to find Atlantis are Nefarious, the evil wizard, and Joe, the most fearsome dragon in the universe."Dada has opened the door to a new Wonderland."  - Lewis Carroll "If I was still alive this is the book I would love to have written. -The ghost of Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "I gave the book to Krishna but he couldn't get the New Zealand humor." - Veda Vyasa, author of the Bhagavad Gita "... nowhere near as good as Lord of the Rings, but it is a lot funnier." - The ghost of J.R.R. Tolkien "They'll publish anything these days." - William Shakespeare

This book teaches us about humanity in its simplest form, which reminds us of the complexity and Divinity that exists within each one of us!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. pleasantly surprised By Andrew Rawlings Fantasy, ugh! or so I thought until I was introduced to the "mayor of Not Enough Hugs Valley" and "lured by the sweet water that tinkled and whispered as if it would never run out of gossip." With his strong command of the language Dada captured my attention and has given me much to think about. If you are looking for a book to spend some time with, check this out. I am now watching for the next installment and the next. Watch out! JK Rowling ' a reader '

Much of it is very funny, with a joke in every sentence. Then suddenly the jokes stop and the narration describes a beautiful nature scene or a spiritual experience with words that touch the divine. The laughter and the beauty won me completely. What a joy. Waiting for the next volume!

Otherness, by David Brin

From Booklist In his latest collection of short fiction, essays, and insightful commentaries on both, Brin defines the term otherness as the currently popular relativistic dogma that other points of view are just as important as our own. Using this conception as a loosely organizing theme, Brin assembles some of his finest recent work, from "Shhh," a wryly original tale about alien first contact in which humans may hold a secret edge on their otherwise overwhelmingly superior visitors, to a skeptical critique of reports of extraterrestrial abductions. In "Bubbles," otherness is explored through the electronic awareness of a sentient spacecraft that discovers a doorway to another universe. In perhaps his most penetrating nonfiction piece concerning otherness, "The New Meme," Brin explores the limits to human interpretations of reality. Although, falling short on plot and character, the stories here often read as thinly disguised thought-experiments, they succeed as entertaining hard sf. A treat for Brin fans and connoisseurs of first-rate speculative science. Carl Hays

Here's a brief summary of its contents, with each story/essay independently rated. From * "I did not like it at all" to ***** "I loved it". I was expecting something like Kiln People. The Giving Plague: A scientist tries to avoid catching a plague in which discovery he took part. ***Myth Number 21: A super short story. To say more would spoil it. *Dr. Pak's Preschool: Early stimulation on babies is taken to the extreme. ****Detritus Affected: Some archaeologists in the near future make grim discoveries at a site. ***The Dogma of Otherness: An essay about the newness of caring for other. **Sshhh...: Humanity looks for its secret unique talent in the Universe. *****Those Eyes: A radio talk show profoundly affect a UFO crew. ****What to Say to a UFO: An essay about how the story came to be. ***Bonding to Genji: Introduction to the world of Genji. *****The Warm Space: In the future, natural humans will be left out of the space race from robo humans, so a man makes a choice to be remembered. ***** The best of the book.Whose Millennium? An essay on Y2K and its relative irrelevance from a millennial standpoint. It was a good one before y2k. **NatuLife: A city dweller and his ancient virtual world. ***Piecework: Using natural resources for production. *****Science versus Magic: An essay comparing Science and Magic. **Bubbles: One stranded spaceship makes an astounding discovery. ****Ambiguity: An scholar discovers he's done more than he thought he would. **What Continues... and What Fails... Evolution on a universal scale. *****The Commonwealth of Wonder: An essay talking about ideas that spread and other topics. **

That he is a disciple of Richard Dawkins was evident from a line in "The Giving Plague" taken directly from the title of Dawkins' book, "The Selfish Gene". He makes it obvious by the final essay. He also appears to like the surprise twist at the end of the story as several of these short stories have them. The end of "Dr. Pak's Preschool" seemed to me to be a bit contrived, as did the end of the (much better) "The Warm Space", but "Piecework" was such a fabulous, delightful story that I read it several times over even before I went on to finish the book. "NatuLife" was also a fabulous story with many layers of meaning and significance. A fascinating premise that first appears in "Ambiguity" takes a decidedly preachy turn in "What Continues...and What Fails...", a story that crystalizes the author's (and Dawkins') views on evolution. When it comes to the essays, "The Dogma of Otherness" is both clever and interesting. Brin's sense of humor comes through quite well. Starting with "Whose Millenium" the essays get preachy though, and the mask came off in the final one which was both predictable and boring for anyone who has taken part in internet debates on evolution or religion.I own this book, having picked it up when the local library discarded it to make room for others. Most of the stories are definitely worth reading, but it isn't likely to find a permanent spot on my shelves either.

Good, provocative and unexpected By Amazon Customer I've tried to read David Brin books before and found them either too subtle for me, or just plain boring. Though, I have read the blurbs on many of his books, and always thought he had some surprising ideas -- as if he'd been practicing those lateral-thinking puzzles for years. I was quite surprised to find a great collection of very provocative ideas that kept me interested all the way through. From a Japanese culture where the ultimate work-ethic means babies are tutored within the womb and are hooked up to computers at their birth, to "organic humans" discovering themselves useful again after years of uselessness in a culture and society of ultimate "cryo-mechanical humans": I was impressed. He even touches on theories of the existence of the entire universe(s) in a highly entertaining way. My recommendation is forget his longer (and long-winded) novels and devour his short-fiction. The ideas/stories in this collection are crystalised and involving. This one may actually cause me to look more closely at his other novels...

By Tonia A nice book to tie up ends with the characters we don't know a whole lot about, it's nice to see back stories on the less developed characters that we see through out the book, and even some brand new characters, I love this series, if you are looking for a zombie series that has a bit of everything in it, I think you should try this out. I read a lot of series, but this is one of my top favorites.

Need more about this Broken, Shattered, Mad, Lost World By ahhmericanwoman As a huge fan of the "Broken World" series, I was really looking forward to this book. It had some interesting stories in it, but it wasn't quite what I expected. Only two stories involved characters related to the series. The first one featured Roger, the father of Vivian and husband of Darla. As could be guessed, he is not the most pleasant person, to put it nicely. He was also a survivor of the of the killer virus. You can see how he fares up against the zombies. Another story featured Brady, a series character who is introduced in the 4th book, "Lost World". We find out how things went for him during the virus and zombie apocalypse before he met up with the rest of the group. The other stories were random characters unattached to the series. Most of them didn't end well, which can kind of be expected when' they're up against zombies, but it was still a little bit depressing. My favorite involved two new characters, Emma and Blake. Their story, "Thank You Daddy", ends on a note of hope. There were quite a few editing errors. ((In Emma and Blake's story, Blake is once called Jake). The final two stories in the book, which took up the last 25% of it, weren't even listed in the table of contents. Overall I was satisfied with the book, but it just whet my appetite for more. Hopefully it won't be horribly much longer until the next book in the Broken World series is out. I really gotta get me some more Axl.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great intro to the series By Terry Tyler 4.5 starsI just spent a very happy happy two and a half hours reading these, a snip at 99p!If you've finished the Broken World series and wish there was another book, or haven't read it yet and wonder if you're going to like it, this collection is a terrific introduction to it.Some of the stories are about characters we have already met or heard of in the series (such as Brady in Colorado, Vivian's father Roger, two of the girls who got out of the catastrophe at the Monte Carlo casino, and the girl down on Key West who was immune to the virus ~ you'll like the ending to that one, if you've already read the series!). Others, though, are about people from different places: a girl in rural Oklahoma whose dad was a survivalist, another couple who had made the wrong decision to stay put in a city centre. I thought Roger was particularly well done; shades of Angus, but basically a bad guy, whereas Angus was basically good.As with the other books in this series, there are a few editing and proofreading errors, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment; Kate Mary is a terrific storyteller. I would have liked seven more, and hope that some day she will write another book in the series ... I want to know what happened to Brady, Jim, the people at Hope Springs, and some of the new people I met in these stories. And I'm not finished with Viv and Axl yet!Definitely recommended.

Fast, fun & furious By Sybrand Strauss I don't normally go for the shoot-em up sci-fi genre - but the pure fun factor of the Star Force series thus far has me hooked. Extinction doesn't pretend to be anything more than 'n fast paced popcorn sci-fi, yet it still explores some interesting premises, and leaves you curious about other aspects of the odd interstellar war that drives the story. It's a worthy follow up to Swarm. If you liked Swarm, you'll like Extinction. If you need a comparison to something else, I'd say Extinction feels a bit like Heinlein's Starship Troopers, mixed in with a bit of Poul Anderson's The High Crusade. (Yes - it's an old school sci-fi feel, with a thoroughly modern take.)

23 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Pulp Fiction By Kindle Customer This the 2nd book has more of a 50's pulp fiction feel to it. Clipped, too clever Sam Spade dialog throughout the book. It is a bit wearing after a while. Bogart is the only one to perfect this and it took black and white to complete the effect. Story ideas from or like Stargate, but not a ripoff or a redo. The use of nano was good but nothing new or really cool.Characters are shallow. The female lead bounces into the room to kiss or slap the protagonist several times. And of course she is hot with long tanned legs. This is fine but she is now a love toy not a person. Depth is needed on all the characters.Enjoyable light, and I stress the light, read at a good price. I would have really loved this when I was 13. And that describes the book best for me.I describe it as pulp fiction and that is no insult, this is play reading and as important as the great works in their own way. Just wish it was a bit deeper.

Plenty of action, an interesting story line, a fallible hero. For 2.99 and the fact that the author has not tried to make his story into something it's not, I give it 5 stars. If you're looking for something mindbogglingly complex then this is not it. If you just want a fun book and an enjoyable evening then Extinction will more than provide.

The author of CANCER: A BREAKTHROUGH THEORY shares a revolutionary diet to minimize cancer risk and redefine dietary cancer management. This book stands alone as the new gold-standard and shatters the ceiling of both the dietary treatment of cancer and the dietary prevention of cancer. The information within its pages will not be found anywhere else. With its release in late June of 2015, it quickly rose on the sales charts, and with good reason; a book like this one has never been written before. Why don’t all of those other alkalizing diets and curative diet books work? The science of how it works and how it fails is all explained in this book in an easy to comprehend manner. The book specifically addresses the correct way to form an alkalizing diet and the molecular manner by which it works to slow and stop cancer. Is cancer preventable? Once you read chapters 35 to 40, your answer to that question may very well change. For the prevention aspect towards cancer, with the simple re-working of your daily diet to add just a couple of targeted bites of food a day, your odds for getting cancer could be greatly diminished. The mechanisms of these actions working against the factors that form cancer are fully explained. THE THIRD BOOK IN THE E SERIES Both friends and enemies are keen to get their hands on the information inside Eden’s head—information that could take down the Sentries and change the world. But there are costs that no one realized, and Eden’s not so sure she’s willing to pay them. Refusing to do so could create dangerous problems within the tribe she’s only just come back to. Eden has her own agenda for learning Lily’s secrets. With hope refusing to die, she’s spurred forward by memories of Oscar and thoughts of finding him again. But Lily’s hold on her is greater than she knows, compelling her to chase after strange clues and confusing visions. With love and longing weighing on her, Eden must determine the reality of her fractured identity in order to decide which path to take. The choices she makes could tear her away from Jonas and Apollon, from everything she’s ever known. Eden’s future will not be determined solely by choices. Fate has her own cards to play, and they just might take the game.

Eden, by Kate Wrath

From the Author Eden is rather different from the other books in The E Series, in that it focuses more on Eden's internal conflict, identity, and search for her past.  The book was written as a companion book with the prequel, Jason and Lily.  Each of these books will give you a glimpse of Eden's life journey, but only together do they provide the whole picture.  The intended reading order of the series is as follows:E, Evolution, Eden, Jason and Lily, Elegy....

Kate Wrath has done it again. She has taken is deeper into Eden's world and completely transformed the story, taking in unexpected and amazing directions.THE THIRD BOOK IN THE E SERIESBoth friends and enemies are desperate to get their hands on the information inside Eden’s head—information that could take down the Sentries and therefore change the world. But Eden isn't sure she wants anyone to access that information.Eden is determined to discover Lily’s secrets. With hope refusing to die, she’s spurred forward by memories of Oscar and thoughts of finding him again. But Lily’s hold on her is greater than she realized, compelling her to chase after strange clues and confusing visions. With love and longing weighing on her, Eden must determine the reality of her fractured identity in order to decide which path to take. The choices she makes could tear her away from Jonas and Apollon, and away from everything she’s ever known. But it just might note be up to Eden as fate has a way of interfering with the best laid plans.I thought I had this book figured out, but as usual Kate Wrath has written in twists and turns that add an entirely new dimension to the story.I am thrilled that she has written JASON AND LILY - A Prequel to the E Series and can't wait to get my hands on it.Also, coming soon is Book 4 in the series and I will be eagerly awaiting it's publication.I rate EDEN as 5 out of 5 stars.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Kate Wrath is the author of the E Series and has quickly secured a spot on my favorite new authors list.

By Tamara AlKurdi Review on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25346996-eden?ac=1I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.4.5 stars. And Kate Wrath has done it again.Plot:Eden is stuck in a world she cannot comprehend. The past is consuming her, the unknown, is unknown. Eden goes on a hunt with he good friend, Apollon, while also faking a life she does not understand, Eden tries to discover what it is her old self tried to accomplish. Not only must Eden unravel the past, but she is also trying to fix what she has left behind, but through logic, it cannot be achieved.Jonas is trying really hard to change what the present holds rather than look back from what was, but ishe really as ignorant to the past as Eden is?While unleashing her past, Eden runs into the unthinkable, her life was more than just about finding Jonas and ending the Sentries for good.Hunted by her past, struggling with her present, Eden must balance it all while trying to save the little boy she left behind, and falling for Jonas all over again, yet cannot seem to distinguish her thoughts with Lily's.Characters:Eden: Eden has gotten a little more emotional as she progresses into a world of confusion, yet she still is that head headed girl she always was.Jonas: A little mysterious, alluring, yet annoying.Apollon: My favorite blond headed friend.Writing:The author has brought back her poetic style. While lacking a little in book 2, Wrath has given us a beautiful masterpiece with Eden, book 3. Descriptions, story, dialogue, it is all abundant from cover to cover. Honestly, her writing is probably my favorite from all other authors. Is so unique and strong."The first part is the hardest," I tell her, rambling on. I don't know if that's a lie. I'm certainly not finding it easy after all this time. And her experience was different from mine, wasn't it? I was scrambling for my life. So no. Maybe the first part isn't the hardest. Still it's a good lie, and I'm sticking with it.""Pounding, slamming, punching, fingers crunching. tangle arms and lungs and nothing working can't move can't breath- "Eden! Eden!" Jonas' voice explodes in my ear. "Goddammit stop this thing right now!" Panting- mine, his. A soft breath of voice. "It's OK. It's OK."""I risk a glance at him, hating that I'm already melting, with so little effort from him to make things right between us. He doesn't even give me an explanation. Not even a promise of an explanation."Kate Wrath also possesses this kind of humor that makes you laugh, cry and jump. Eden is so much things, and the author encompasses all the good and stubborn qualities a righteous person can claim all in a beautifully wrapped package.Dislikes:-Eden cried a bit too much.-Jonas frustrated me to no end. Why keep so much secrets? Is it to protect him, or Eden?-The story does not go to far in explaining thing. We get to understand so much more, yet left with more questions. The story goes by really slow, slower than it should, yet, even saying that, Wrath makes up the slowness and clarifies more about Eden while we wait for the action to arrive.Others:-I loved Wrath's dedication page and acknowledgements. It was really different. And I can tell it meant a lot.-The little preview for Jason and Lily, the prequel to E, was just too much. It is making me so anxious for the release date. And the little warning Wrath wrote made me laugh so loud at 3 AM in the morning.I really hope others could pick up this amazing series. It is all well written and so very very lovable.Cannot wait for the next books!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Go Kate! Another good 'un! By H. Lynch I'm about 25 percent into this one, and I'm totally engrossed. Kate jumps right in with both feet, eliminating the usual recap tedium that so often accompanies a series. The writing is rich and descriptive (I'm still itching from the cockroach scene), and the characters are lovably complex. I love Eden while simultaneously wanting to shake her. She could avoid so much turmoil if she had the courage to be emotionally vulnerable and communicative. It makes her relatable and infuriating. I'll update when I'm finished, but if you're new to this series, definitely start with book one, or you'll be totally lost.**Update 6//15/15** I finished this this morning (I was so into it that I made a command decision to be late for work). I can't say much without spoiling, but there are subtle things that go on here - don't skim! I have a tendency to skim when I get close to the climax of any book because I'm excited and can't wait to find out what's going to happen. This is not the book for that. There are important things taking place in the dialog; you don't want to miss a word! Kate is beautifully subtle in her storytelling here; more so than with the previous books, and it really does manifest and come to fruition in an interesting way. This is one you go slow with. Let the plot unfold as it will, and hang on for the ride.

“of Knights and Wizards.” A boy accidentally transformed into a wizard before his time in this exciting series, and what a sorcerer! He’s a TarCranian wizard, the cream of the crop. But 12-year-old Marcus must gather his wits about him if he is to save the kingdom, only he can’t quite get the hang of the wizard thing, far too much to learn for an impatient young fellow. It will take years to gather experience. And his spell casting while sleepwalking makes everything that much more complicated and frightening. He’s distracted enough now without adding a female to grab his attention, but captured by Raina’s pretty face like a fly in a web.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hurray for the Dragons By Pamela Barrett I don't usually read fantasy, but I started reading a sample of this book and loved the story so much I got the whole book. It starts with a horrific battle scene, between a awful King who loves bloodshed and wants to dominate every kingdom around him. There is one kingdom that is protected by a wizard, and that King is a kind ruler. I loved his family: Alexa his daughter and a awesome warrior, and his young son Marcus who is so inquisitive that he befriends a dragon. The dragons are wonderful, funny, cute and fierce. The knights are brave and each personality stands out. Storytelling at its best. My only critique is that it needed a bit more editing, and the slang that the characters used was jarring because it abruptly dropped me out of the time period. Still I enjoyed it and laughed at some of their antics. With a little polishing I would have given this book 5 stars.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Amazing By Dakota Wesley Neese I suggest that others should read this story because it was a truly unique read. I wish it would continue on to expand the story and tell of Marcus's journey to becoming a great wizard like Adorok.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Delightfully Charming Fantasy Of Dragons, Wizards And Magic--and Love. By Amazon Customer Knights of the Dragon, Book 1ByA. J. GallantKing Chromos of the Yurrosy is on a rampage to kill all the surrounding kingdoms, finding it easier as many have lost their protective magic and their wizards are old with waning powers. Achakos and Adela, beautiful beyond comparison, are tired of fighting to the death. It has out served its purpose and they wish to settle down and have their children who will not die in fruitless battles. The king also has the most dragons, red fiery ones who will fight the black dragons to death, not out of loyalty to their King, but because they're covered in a magic spell. In a neighboring kingdom the Four Knights of Joshuar are on a mission in search of a wizard to replace theirs, but upon returning home they are greeted by death and destruction. They, too, are tired of endless war, even as a red Dragon circles the sky above them, planning on killing them. Only Titus’s handful of magic dust saves them from the dragon’s ferocious breaths of fire. The aging wizard, Adorok, has moments of lucidity, which King Darius takes advantage of, hoping to procure some protective magic. His feisty daughter, Alexa, a warrior as fierce as any man, even her mentor, Stone, much prefers to do battle with the Yurrosy before they are attacked and destroyed like most of the other kingdoms. The wizard does his best but Stone, Alexa and other knights need to find a stronger wizard. Even as they search, the red dragons are flying into black dragons’ territory, enraging the Dragon, Kai, who flies up to meet their assault with his own dragons. The red dragons, controlled by magic, are beyond reasoning. Such a battle draws crowds below since it has been 50 years since dragons fought each other. This book by A. J. Gallant is a delightful read for lovers of fantasy, particularly with dragons who display humor and one in particular who bonds with a young boy named Marcus. The Dragon, Ryxa, and Marcus contrive a plan of their own to stop the massacre. An improbable idea at best.Author Gallant is a true storyteller, which well makes up for some of the editing needed in this book. His characters are well developed, and likable; the evil ones also interesting in their dark ways. Gallant has a bent for wry humor and fun as he writes a captivating tale of the proverbial battle of good versus evil. Will peace be possible without magic? Can dragons, both red and black help prevent death and destruction? Adults and YA will enjoy this book 1 as well as his just released, "Of Dracula: Hearts of Stone," and “Of Knights and Wizards”. A new series is born . . . "Braeden the Barbarian: Forbidden City."Micki Peluso, author of . . . And the Whippoorwill Sang

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A very strong book, more impressive than most "book 2 of 3" titles I have ever seen! By Petrov Neutrino As a newcomer to M.C.A. Hogarth's writing, I was not sure what to expect. I was extremely pleased and impressed. If you are reading this review, you either have already decided on the series or are reading the reviews for all three curious to see how the story stands as a trilogy. In that respect, book 2 is an uncommon find in trilogies - it is a strong book on its own! As you would expect from a 'middle book', there are cliffhangers resolving book 1 and setting up book 3, along with some foreshadowing and significant character development. There are also a lot of surprises along the way. I would -not- recommend reading the volumes out of order; treat the trilogy as one work, buy them all at the same time as well since you will want to dive into the next title immediately!Technical Note: This book was designed for e-reading, with a great deal of care given to details. Maps, font changes, detailed glyphs, and headers are effectively used throughout, showing that (unlike many e-books) their inclusion was not a mere afterthought. Nicely done!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful By JB Tarangson Hogarth deftly keeps the story progressing, even though it's clear that this is an interlude. The tension ratchets up beautifully, as the puzzle pieces slowly come together. Even though it's setting the stage for book 3, this is an excellent read in and of itself. The characters grow and develop in delightful ways, and the world gains even more richness and depth. Beautiful!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. All in all, a pleasant "middle book" of a strong trilogy.. By Scott A. H. Ruggels The second Book continues the adventures of Morgan Locke, and his two companions almond and Kelu as they escape from the Archipelago, and return to their home country. Once there, they re join with Morgans' friends from the university, and their teacher, and then head north to an archaeological site in the middle of a ruined city. Like many trilogies this one was a little slack in the middle, with a lot of the discussions amongst the protagonist and his friends resembling discussions amongst Freshmen in the dormitory lounges, but the characters are likable enough, I didn't mind so much. Clues about the nature of the universe and what the shape of the past are revealed in the dig, but conflicts leave the ending of this book on a cliff hanger. Recommended, but as read with the others, as it's part of a trilogy. start with the first book. It was interesting to see that scholarship worked to find the clues to the solution of their problem/quest, rather than mucking about the country side (though there is a little of that). All in al,l a pleasant "middle book" of a strong trilogy.

It's about two pages long, and appears to be lifted directly off of a web page. There is supposed to be a free bonus with this book, but you have to enter your email address to get it. Don't bother with this one.

Poor Conventions, but Superb Story By Amazon Customer Negatives:Multiple Grammar and Spelling Errors: You get used to them after a while but a nice thorough editing would do wonders for the text.Confusing Names, Places, Terms: There is a LOT of new information as this world is introduced, and it's a little hard to keep track of it all! A glossary might be helpful.Marcus's Enculturation (Small Spoiler Alert): I found it a little hard to believe Marcus so quickly accepting his new life in Lyrridia. A little more explanation of his life on Earth, or maybe having Eleanor ask something like, "Aren't your parents worried about you/looking for you?" would make the transition much more believable.Positives:Vivid Imagination: The author knows his world well and is very good at description. You can tell he has spent a lot of time thinking about Lyrridia and its history and inhabitants. The story would make an excellent movie - very visual and full of action.Exploration of Themes: Coming-of-Age, Love, Sacrifice, Role of Magic, Power, Friendship are a few of the many explored topics that are handled with maturity and insight.Memorable Characters: The secondary female characters are all a little too similar (stereotypically "motherly"), but otherwise the characters are relatable and engaging, especially the main characters.Overall, the writing needs a little work - besides the convention errors, the dialogue is a little stiff at times - but the story is worth it. The story is highly immersive and absolutely enjoyable to read, and I am VERY eager to read the next two books in the trilogy!

The characters had personality but the only flaw I could find was the fairy tale theme to them. They were just a little too good to be true.

Nominated for the 1998 World Fantasy Award. Lightning chases Larry Ngitis to Dry Water, New Mexico, a town with a reputation for hauntings, unexplained weather, and vanishing treasure hunters. A shy author and reluctant psychic, Larry has the unsettling ability to see how people will die. In Dry Water there are rumors of a fabled spring of “water that cannot be drunk,” flowing through a realm where the living and dead mingle, causing ripples in history and wrinkles in time … and Larry is destined to locate this remarkable waterway. Larry’s arrival, however, has not gone unnoticed by two of Dry Water’s more unconventional denizens: Raja, “Daughter of the Terror Winds,” a local celebrity and witch who seeks the water’s power to erase humankind’s future by altering the past … and Nikolos, her lover/nemesis, an ageless necromancer whose eternal mission is the destruction of all prophets, including Larry. But, while clueless, Larry Ngitis is far from helpless, as he is joined by otherworldly allies—the ghost of a gunslinger and a Navajo shaman—who aid him on his terrifying and essential journey.

Dry Water, by Eric Nylund

Amazon.com Review Eric Nylund has said that Dry Water is a tribute to Roger Zelazny. And so it is--this novel alludes to many of Zelazny's books, including the Amber series. One character--a deceased fantasy writer named Dolinski--is clearly meant to represent Zelazny. And Nylund works in an amazing assortment of myth and magic, as Zelazny did. Tribute aside, this is highly original contemporary fantasy. Nylund peoples his New Mexico setting with ghosts from area history, a Navajo shaman and his son who act as guides and protectors of hero Larry Ngitis, a witch who sponsors authors in her spare time, and a necromancer who goes through history murdering anybody who seems likely to bring about major historical change. Larry's work as a science fiction writer also gives Nylund an opportunity to make some witty points about the genre. The pace is manic, with Nylund cutting back and forth between characters, time periods, and locations in dizzying fashion, but the plot works and the ending is satisfyingly unexpected. Tim Powers fans will definitely enjoy this. --Nona Vero

Shades of Powers and Swanwick By frumiousb I picked this book up on the strength of the cover blurbs-- Powers called it a "Fellini Carnival" and Swanwick was more than kind. I figured that a book those two liked could not be too far off from my own taste. And that was true, I have to say.Nylund is a strong writer with a powerful imagination. His story is about a reluctant prophet who is suddenly plagued by a host of accomplished magicians wanting to either help him or hinder him from attaining a goal he never knew he had. The characters are handled well and the plot fits neatly together. It is about as clean of a writing job as you can expect in fantasy.A few points--the one way in which the book is not handled well is the female love interests of the hero. Both Linda and Paloma end up as stereotypes, and not terribly well-developed stereotypes, at that. Too bad, because that would have deepened Larry's motivations and our understanding of his character.Much was clear to me when I read here that the book was intended as a tribute to Zelazny. Explained some weirdnesses around the writer character. I would have rather known it *before* I had read the book.If you like works in the vein of Swanwick or Powers, you too will probably find this a good read. You may not find it a great one, but it is always good to discover a promising new author.

Freeman There is more compressed into this novel than in any other fantasy I've ever read, and I've been a fan for forty years. Poul Anderson's sf novel The Boat of a Million Years covers as broad a span of history, but in three times the pages and half the complexity. Charles de Lint and Terri Windling have defined contemporary mythic fiction for me, but I was even more bowled over by this book than I was by The Little Country. For creatively dramatizing the complexities in the mythic war of good and evil, Nylund rivals Clive Barker. From the strength of his writing skill, imagery, and characterization, I believe I'll like Eric Nylund's other books too, although I don't expect the rest of them to be like this one; he does say that this is inspired by Roger Zelazny.I don't have space in my small room for keeping many books, but this is a keeper. It's worth hunting down a used copy. Hope that the publishers wise up and reprint it.

Nylund's superb contempo-fantasy novel, Dry Water. After I started reading, I was hooked-- the book goes in several startling directions, and can almost never be pinned down. With each page of Dry Water, I found myself thinking, "no normal author could get away with this!" Between trippy magical effects and surreal juxtapositions of the mundane and the fantastical, it's amazing that this book works as well as it does. Aside from the mind-blowing plot, the story has some recurring themes that keep it grounded, such as the release of guilt and the rush to change the world. Raja the witch and Nick (aka Judzyas) the necromancer are perfect foils for one another, showing how both seeking complete change and desperately clinging to stasis are unwise courses of action. Dry Water is both deeply complicated and a fun, exciting read. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't, to borrow a phrase, a "narrow-minded quirkophobe"- and especially to fans of Philip Pullman and Jack Chalker.
