When I set about writing this series I'd just finished the Red World trilogy, a long, complex, Dune/ Old Testament-like sword-and-sandals fantasy series with a huge glossary and extensive appendixes and author notes. With this series I wanted the stories to be fast-paced, full of adventure and fun and most of all, hopeful about the future. There are serious challenges and uncertainties that the hero faces, certainly, but this series has a positive outlook on humanity's eventual future. I was mainly inspired by Edgar Rice-Burroughs's Barsoom series and George Lucas's original Star Wars films, as well as other science fiction influences from the past. Bob Astor, the hero in the books is a regular guy working in a big corporation who has a keen curiosity, a good heart and a willingness to help others in trouble – and he gets himself into hot water along the way to saving the day. ----- Q:In what order should I read these books? You can read them in any order you want and still enjoy them but there is a specific story arc in the books that progresses as the story moves forward. I found mysel stoping and trying to figure out what author meant."B3- 6’s would do its part in keeping the Milky Way peaceful and united, and with it, would be accomplished, and with it the chance for greater success."This sentence doesn't make sense. It makes it hard to follow story at times.Yes I would recommend to others, especially if they had Kindle Unlimited account.

A story of adventure, survival, and relationships By readingteeners When I read EDGE OF THE FALLS, the first book in this series, I fell in love Sabah and the people around her. Her story was so much about learning who she was and fighting for what she wanted, no matter the cost. This second book focuses on so many of the people that we meet in the first story. We see the children that Sabah cared for all grown up and we see the consequences of her actions and choices. I had mixed feelings about this story but once I finished and took a step back I appreciated the difference in focus from the first book and the challenges CHASING THE WIND presents.In this book we see Kai, the little girl who grew up. She is so full of emotions, both positive and negative, attempting to find her place in the world. She has lived both on the outside of the cities and on the inside- learning about everything the world has to offer. Yet there are some places she has been forced to go in the name of love and friendship. When she is sent from the city to save Guin’s life, Kai and Cedric are sent on a dangerous journey to find what has been stolen. They have 60 days to do this or Guin’s life will be payment. Whereas Sabah’s story was all about her choices and her personal growth as a character, Kai’s story is about relationships and embracing where you are meant to be. Kai’s relationship with Cedric and Guin is quite unconventional and at first I was a bit shocked. This little girl has learned to adapt in very unique ways and this trio is bonded together in ways that forever changed them.Hawke is a character from the first story- the perpetual flirt that has matured and fought for survival. He is alone, a Rover and wanderer, living his own path. When they cross paths he protects Kai in every way he can, never truly understanding her intentions and goals. The relationships in this story are complex and a bit messy. Yet that shows so much. Relationships are never perfect- they are full of highs and lows. All the relationships in this story are unique: the strained relationship between Sabah and Kai, the complicated relationship with Guin, Kai, and Cedric, as well as the relationship between Kai and Hawke. The relationship dynamics are what make this story fresh and unique. They are all so different and their influences are great.If you have read the first book, you will remember Sabah’s struggle to leave the children behind. We see the consequences of her choice in the way that Guin, Kai, and Cedric grew up. There is anger, bitterness, and many abandonment issues. Years later her choices have molded these characters and it is fascinating to see what has happened and the choices they, in turn, make till the very end of this story! I love this world that Nazarea has created and the characters she has shared. They are all so unique and vibrant in different ways. I cannot wait for more. I am hoping for a story on Merc, Guin, and the princess.

She has constructed such a world that made me lose a few days while being sucked into Kaida’s world. She also made me love Cedric, Kaida, and Guin together and then presented Hawke, which had me torn for a little while. This lady is absolutely brilliant.Chasing the Wind follows the trio we were introduced to in Edge of the Falls. However, they are in a tight situation, which leads Kaida and Cedric to leave the City and rely on Hawke to guide them to Sabah so they can ask for help. This leads to all sorts of craziness and I loved every bit of it. Like the first book, the second is filled with just about everything you could want and more.This world Andrews has pieced together is a violent one but oh so wonderful when you have the right person beside you. In this story, Kaida has Guin and Cedric but you quickly realize that there might be someone a little better for her. Enter Hawke: I didn’t think that anyone could beat Arjun as the greatest but Hawke had me the moment that he claimed Kaida for her protection. I mean, when he says, “I will give up the wind and chase you,” that was it for me. I loved him and I knew that he was perfect for Kaida even though she didn’t know it yet.A few things that bugged me a little were Kaida’s constant back and forth between the two men she grew up with and Hawke. It was very ping-pong-ish as a reader and it upset me to know that she had such a wonderful man willing to be all hers but she kept going back to the familiar. Also, I guess I was expecting her to be more like Sabah – tough like Sabah. But every once and a while Kaida would break down but in the next scene, she would be as tough as nails. I was a little confused on who she really was. However, none of this deterred me from really loving this story. It is still amazing and had me wrapped up in it all since the beginning. I can’t wait for the next installment.~MC

Their brother and lover Guin has been imprisoned for Cedric’s crimes and now they must find Sabah and turn her over to the City to get him back. On the way they meet Hawke the Lone Wolf who Kadia remembers from the Manor. Hawke helps Cedric and Kadia get to Sabah through the harsh lands and Tribes.I fell in love with Edge of the Falls the first book in this series which you really need to read to fully understand what this book is about. Sadly Chasing the Wind fell a little flat for me, but Nazarea Andrew’s fantastic storytelling skills kept me going.Kadia has two lovers Guin and Cedric, her brothers at the manor and lovers in the City. When Cedric’s underground rebels steal the Cities princess Guin gets kidnapped and Kadia and Cedric know they have to do whatever it takes to get him back and make their group whole again. Kadia was a very annoying character to me. I really didn’t like her throughout the book and while she became slightly better at the end I couldn’t really connect with her the way I would have liked to.Hawke is a great swoon worthy hunk, which isn’t surprising since Ms. Andrews always does a great job at writing alpha males. Hawke gives up everything to help Kadia a girl he barely knows but is instantly attracted to. I enjoyed being inside his head the most.Chasing the Wind was a nice read. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first and it reminded me a lot of her World Without End series too much.Despite that Chasing the Wind was a decent read and I can’t help but hope there is another one coming.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this story line By cheri I enjoyed this story line. The caring young teaching connecting with a special student and her sexy brother. There are several issues with the story, I am not real strong fan of first person, and with the tense issues on this one it was distracting. A good editing will really help this along a lot. The almost instant hopping into bed, especially with a concussion and injured leg was a concern. This seems to be a standard with many shorts as does an abrupt ending.Her acceptance of their shape shifting, as a witness was well done.I liked the end of this one. She gives us some information and history leading to the HEA. That was satisfying. With some editing this is a good read and the storyline makes it well worth the time. Gezon is cute and could have a book about him all grown up.

I felt like i was missing something the whole time. most likely because of the length of the book. Everything about the book was okay. If you looking for fast, quick read about a teach and bear shifter then pick this one and enjoy!

Undoubtedly, the title says it all, instead of the formulaic, mysterious werewolf of fiction lore, Naz is a “were-bear”. So, it’s a dynamic twist on a familiar supernatural beast that captivates the reader’s attention. In this quick-paced romance read, the author draws in readers and fans of the paranormal romance genre into a primitive, raw, unsettling world of seduction and lust, of power and dominance.I’d like to stress that the descriptor is spot-on that this is literary material for mature readers only: there is quite graphic language used in a sexual context. Definitely made for an 18 and over readership only. The depiction of the bears in combat is pretty much like what one might witness on a Nat-Geo explorer special; fairly descriptive and engaging as far as the topic of animal behavior goes, without being too heavy-handed.Fans, female mostly, of the Twilight saga oeuvre will take delight in this breezy read that will take less than an hour to devour. As one who has not had a chance to partake in “shapeshifter” tales much,(first time I have heard that term used, by the way) I found this one to be a real eye-opener, it will draw you in, and provide enough twists and turns to anticipate the surprising ending.

About the Author Wen-Shing Tseng, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. He was born in Taiwan in 1935 and was trained in psychiatry at the National Taiwan University of Taipei and later at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center of Harvard Medical School in Boston. He was a research fellow in culture and mental health at the East-West Center from 1970-1971, before he was recruited as a faculty member of the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, where he became a professor in 1976 and has served as training director for the psychiatric residency training program between 1975-1982. Dr. Tseng is a consultant to the World Health Organization and served as chairman of the Transcultural Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association for two terms from 1983-1993. He has edited, co-edited and authored over a dozen books dealing with psychiatry, psychotherapy, and cultural psychiatry.

Jon Streltzer, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine where he was a training director from 1982-1996. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is board certified in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and pain management. He has been Chair of the Chronic Pain Task Force of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and is a member of the Pain Medicine Board Examination Committee of the American Board of Anesthesiologists. He has been on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychiatry and Medicine and is a reviewer for several journals. Dr. Streltzer is widely published in the areas of psychosomatic medicine, pain, and cultural psychiatry.

However, having it and reading it has created a different story and meaning.This book is extremely useful in dealing with cross cultural issues and dynamics insofar as they deal with mental health issues, particularly with regard to diagnoses. The chapters are more or less in alignment with DSM categories. This makes it very easy if you have a client who presents with issues that are culturally driven. The way the book is organized makes it extremely helpful in applying DSM criteria to cultural phenomenology. Frankly, and although I am not extremely well read in the field of diagnostic criterion, I have read other texts and books on cross cultural dynamics and this is by far one of the best I have ever encountered.As persons or practitioners we simply cannot afford to misinterpret a person as to their intent, which is easy if we rely solely on our own cultural experiences and biases. We need something like this book to make mental health diagnostics and even cultural understanding possible. Otherwise the dynamics can get very complex and pass right by us if we are not careful.Personally, I think psychosis is psychosis no matter what culture you are in. But what drives a person to psychosis, for example, is going to be different in different cultures. Simply labeling them does very little good unless you need a code to get paid. Furthermore, not all cultures are like what we call American because even here it can vary greatly between states; and in some of our larger cities, even between neighborhoods. There are just certain things that are going to be avoided or passed over unless we have some sort of understanding that permits us to better comprehend the true nature of the dilemma that presents itself.This book is to me one of those essential components that permits understanding by allowing for the development of a greater ability to help those in need.

I was really impressed with this book. It lays out the slippery slope of commoditization--when you stop recognizing the differentiating quality of your product or service and start selling on price, rather than value. Through examples and anecdotes from Julie LaNasa's years of consulting, the book is accessible and relevant--whether you're a new startup or a well-established company. I was particularly drawn to her ideas around mindset transformation. You realize that it's not enough to simply raise prices or hire a new sales team. There are so many pieces of the puzzle that have to work together. LaNasa lays out exactly how to approach these difficulties, which almost every business will encounter at some point or another, and how to make the real changes that lead to success. I highly recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position.

Set around the Kodiak Starport in a future war between the USA and China the story is like viewing into a crystal ball. I believe the shirking pool of resources such as fisheries will indeed be the trigger for future wars.The characters are engaging through out the story. The author intertwines the characters with the story seeming less. The story succeeds because of this and the blend of real life trends such as the private sector playing a role in the future of space flight. Place this book on your winter reading list. Heck the book was good enough to keep me indoors on a rare fine winters day.Luke Herbert is the founder of The Lens of History blog and Podcast.

A Well-researched View from Alaska By Amazon Customer I'm not a big fan of war novels, but I did read stuff by Leon Uris --- Battle Cry, Mila 18, Armageddon, Exodus, etc. --- as well as Heinlein’s Starship Troopers and other science fiction novels that were military in point of view. And, of course, the earlier Justin Oldham books, Tales from the Kodiak Starport and Bibix. Because I’m an Alaskan and interested in the effects global warming, over-fishing the oceans, mining disasters and oil rig accidents have on everything from our local environment to the global economy, Crisis at the Kodiak Starport caught my attention. Oldham has a firm grip on current events and a fine-tuned intellect that projects these believably into the near future. War with the Chinese? Alaskan fishermen as watchers at sea? Unexpected allies on board the orbiting space station? A starport on Kodiak island with an independent, risk-taking administrator? A sassy, daring journalist documenting the action? Oh, yes! All this and more. Oldham obviously had fun researching and writing this novel. I had fun reading it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bildungsroman fantasy that gets in your head... By Blanca Welsh Admittingly, this book is much different from fantasy I usually read. It's more of a bildungsroman fantasy genre book. By those not familiar with that way of storytelling, it deals with a main character going through a psychological journey, moral growth or both, who for the most part will experience new things and look for answers to new questions as they experience them.Most times, the main character's strongest conflict is with the values of their society.It's more literary fiction than say, Lord of The Rings.With that being said, it's a really interesting book that addresses Gender, Sexuality and explores Polyamourous relationships.Everything sets into motion when Ariah, the titular character, is set on a journey to apprentice with a mentor who can help him navigate his magic.Ariah is a mimic and closeted shaper. He can draw out emotions and shape them or in turn feel them himself. Sometimes it was confusing for him, especially when he's forced to follow his mentor Dirva, to Dirva's hometown.Some of the racial politics were a tad confusing. There were different races of elves, then there were Qin which I think were human? I didn't really read a ton of fantasy books with elves growing up, so maybe I'm missing an unspoken system for different colors/species elves fall under. Sometimes the book didn't always stop to explain it, just expecting me to know. It wasn't a deal breaker, I just didn't follow every detail, so when it came back, I was confused again.I'm a bit ashamed to say that based on the cover and his description, I cannoned him white. If I'm not mistaken he's not white, but I think I would've taken something different from him if I'd known before I finished the book. Especially because more than a few of his love interests were Black, and I'm all about that Blasian. That's the main reason I would've taken something different from it. Blasian depictions are so rare it's embarrassing.That kind of info will have me live tweeting as I read, telling everyone I know, and tagging it like crazy on social media. Like I said, I'm all about that Blasian.It also highlights polyamourous relationships, which sadly get a bad rap based on monogamous relationships being the greater majority. Ariah came into his own sexuality, but I was a little disappointed that the thought of sleeping with a dude wasn't appealing to him, even though he was in love with Sorcha, one of his main love interests. He slept with women on the drop of a hat. As he came into himself, I wondered why(without giving a spoiler alert, which is really hard to do because it's so relevant!) Sorcha had to showcase femininity to justify his attraction to him.But I'm glad it's actually addressing polyamorous relationships. I think when I was young, I used to think monogamy was the only answer, but educating myself on the subject, I see that 5+4 and 6+3 can both bring the same answer. Books like to paint the idea that there is only one person you're allowed to be in love with. I should be clear, that Ariah did not experience a love triangle. He had multiple love interests. At least two of the main people he was in love with were also(or at least how I saw it) in love with other people, and each love was valid.But the topic of Gender came up in a better "even a fool should be learning something from this" kind of way. Ariah, much like most people in our society don't know how to address folks who don't identify as He or She. I'm learning myself to not automatically attach gender without first asking what a person prefers(really hard with a grocery cashier btw) and Ariah lived in a bubble where other pronouns were used.It confused him to be surrounded by non-binary or those who chose not to adhere to a gender at all(cuz there's literally like a million XD). I'm sure there are more books that address this, but this just happens to be the first book I've read that addressed Gender Diversity. I look forward to finding more, as long as they're done with the same amount of respect as this book.I wish Ariah would've been described more. I feel like a jerk for seeing him as a white dude.And on a much less serious note, what was Ariah smoking every other chapter? Ariah stayed gettin' high. He was supposed to be training, and it affected his training, yet he stayed smoking an L XD

There are some issues with repetition throughout the text, but for some reason it came across as more prevelant, and therefore more distracting, in the beginning of the novel. For example, a description of characters was written like:"They looked nothing alike. I saw absolutely no family resemblance."Many of the descriptions came across like this, and in the beginning, they felt unnecessary.Also, there were descriptions that, if added, would have heightened my sense of immersion into the story. For instance, I thought the main character was female for the first few pages. I also had a great deal of trouble imagining the city and the train, so I went to default human buildings, which didn't seem to match the characters.And then, as I continued reading, the rating in my mind went up one star. Despite repetitious statements, the prose is smooth and easy to follow. I was fully immersed at some places, and can still imagine these scenes vividly.Along with these positives, I came across beautiful imagery and wordings, like:"The sun sat low on the horizon, bloody and wounded.""Black skin that drank in the light.""The image of her profile silhouetted against the flickering orange light is burned into my mind, a fixed point in time. It's one of those indelible memories that serves to organize a remembered life."There is so much from this book that will stick with me.The main focus of the story is not a villain or saving another person (the main character does get saved on many occasions, and on many more he saves others), but it's more about the character's growth. The main character, Ariah, is prime and proper, unsure of himself, but as the book continues, he goes on many adventures and finds himself in the process. In other words, the more Ariah experience, the more he realized what he did and did not like.The author handles the character growth in a brilliant way. Ariah isn't stuck in one place, learning who he is. He travels all over the "country", lands in new settings, around different types of people, and it's these new experiences that causes him to look at the world a different way. In many of these adventures, there is danger and that need to continue reading to find out what happens, but these things are not the focus of this novel.In some ways, this reminded me of Ursula Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness. There is an exploration of sexuality, and many of the characters come across as gender fluidIn the end, I wound up with a solid five stars on my mind. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Ariah went on, and when it was over, I felt overwhelming sadness.Ariah's journey resonated with me on a personal level, and I loved that in the end he knew himself so well that he left comforts and took one final trip back to those he loved.

He learns from a mentor, travels to different lands, does a few different jobs, and tries to find out what he actually wants out of life and how and who he wants to love. There are numerous different coloured elves in this world, and there’s a complicated political system between them all. Ariah is marginalised, having to hide certain powers he possesses and only able to work certain jobs.This is not a fast-paced, action-heavy fantasy. Rather, it is pensive and takes its time unfurling. The plot is a bit meandering, perhaps—there’s not a very clear overall arc other than Ariah finding himself, and sometimes it can jump a few years. The book examines gender and sexuality in numerous ways, as different elves have different gender structures, marriage rites and practices, and more. There are several nonbinary characters, and the book is written by a genderqueer author. The prose is crisp and beautiful. Pick up if you like lush fantasy that takes its time exploring the world and the characters.
