From childhood Myri saw things other people didn’t see, like pulsating arcs of energy and spirits. Her dad had warned her. Best to keep such nonsense to herself. But in his last moments when he saw Ruby, a spirit, arrive to help him to the other side, he had smiled. After his death Myri’s life became stranger. Her hands often throbbed with heat. When she reached out for objects, they sometimes moved toward her. People noticed and looked at her quizzically. How could she explain? She didn’t know herself what was happening or why.

A journey in Washington State By Lynn Crook Setting aside the fact that the story takes place in Washington State, and I'm a resident so it's always interesting to see how a writer interprets where I live... "Myri's Hands" recounts the story of an engaging young woman with a special power who sets off on a journey. She learns about herself, and meets some intriguing people along the way. Let's hope we hear more from Myri as she enters the next step of her life, she's training to become a chef!

Myri's mother died when Myri was three, her father, a trucker, died a year before the story takes place. He left her the home, the land, and an old pickup truck he told her was worth its weight in gold. He left her no money, and she worked two jobs just to make ends meet. But, Myri is different. Her hands often burn for no reason, and whatever she reaches for flies to them. She sees Ruby, a spirit who shows up when people die, to help them make the transition from life to death. She sees the life force of people, and she sees it go from colorful to black when they die.She wants to go to culinary school but due to weather and other happenings arrives too late to be allowed to take the test. She really needs to find a way to support herself besides working in the hardware store part time, or at the winery part time. At the winery, she finds herself helping in a very odd and strange wedding, and then is given a week-end at the ocean, where even more strangeness happens.Myri, like her writer, lives in Kennewick, Washington. The places Ms. Roop writes about are real, whether in Kennewick, Walla Walla, or the ocean.Myri's Hands is a great read. My biggest complaint is it's too short. I want more of Myri, her hands, her life. I think this is a delightful book, and the first, I hope, of a series.

Wilde Jane Roop proves once again that she is a consummate story teller as she weaves the tale of Myri, a woman with incredible talents who is unsure what they mean. As Myri unravels the mystery of her gifts, Ms. Roop takes us on a journey through melded worlds of spirit and human connection and collaboration. And as Myri learns to trust what she is capable of, as well as her friends on both sides of that divide, she comes to a place of peace and understanding. Through the author’s exceptional command of language and narrative, the reader comes to share in that sense of peace and order that lives behind the scenes in all of our lives. This is a satisfying read, and an adventuresome one in terms of looking through the obvious into the realm of the unexplored worlds. I highly recommend it.
