This novel opens on 17 year old girl living in New York City. Oh, excuse me, did i say 17? Elyswyth, or Ellie, as her few friends call her, is immortal. She's lived in the city for as long as she can remember, not knowing who- or what- she is. Until one day, she meets a guy who brings snakes onto public transport (snakes!) and tells her she's a dryad. Ellie, the boy, a werewolf girl, and a cast of wild characters hurtle through the plot and though the city, trying to preserve the secrecy that surrounds their small society of Magiks.

The characters were well-developed and the main protagonist, Ellie, was not the stereotypical heroin that we find in most young adult novels. She strayed from societal norms (in many ways) and her past was well explained so there would be no reader confusion. Urban was kept interesting with the steady introduction of new characters and the sad removal of some; as well as depicting the many self-discoveries Ellie makes throughout the book. The ending felt a bit rushed, but concluded with a realistic outcome of what happens to the characters, which was very contrary to the "Yay! Everyone gets to live happily ever after!" mentality of some authors. Overall, it was a good read!

This is a good debut novel by a young author By jen This is a good debut novel by a young author, a very captivating story revolving around magical beings, the timeless struggle between good and evil and the struggle of a minority group. It would be a great gift idea for YA readers interested in magic, witches, werewolves, pixies, dryads and vampires and their daily struggles in present day New York City.
