1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute! Too many different little tiny objects on some pages though By Eureka00 This is pretty cute. Most of the pictures are going to be so fun to color. A lot of them are very time consuming though, because of the crazy amount of different little objects you have to color. I like coloring the ones that don't take quite so long, and since it is marketed to teens they probably should have left some of those out because of the attention span needed :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A fun coloring book By Sarah B. I ordered this for my 14 year old for her birthday and she was so excited to receive it. The back of all the coloring pages are blank, which is great so if using inks they won't bleed or if you want to frame you don't have to chose which one to not show off. The only thing is there is one page that has bras and underwear and there is another page with girls in swim suits, some which are two pieces - just an FYI for those who have a more modest take on swim wear.

“Dr. Macaluso has written the Iliad and the Odyssey of multiple sclerosis while playing the part of Odysseus. Amazing!” Carlo Tornatore, MD, Vice Chairman, Department of Neurology Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC Vincent F. Macaluso was in medical school when he got the news: he had multiple sclerosis. He soon learned that almost a half million people in the United States have multiple sclerosis—and millions more worldwide. Many have obvious symptoms, such as trouble with walking, balance, and coordination, but the most insidious aspect of the disease is how it affects the mind. Macaluso shares insights from his vantage point as a doctor and an MS patient, helping his peers understand symptoms they may not grasp and offering wisdom for those who live with the disease. Learn how to • anticipate and overcome problems concentrating; • manage swirling emotions; • understand MS from a neurological standpoint; • preserve and continue to enjoy an active sex life; and • prevent the disease from ruining family life. Laced with humor and filled with diagrams and the author’s own recollections about how he’s kept MS from controlling his life, this account is essential reading for doctors, patients, and anyone who has an MSer in his or her life.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. My Brain can't stop Laughing! By Karen Karas This is truly an outstanding book...from both a scientific and literary point of view. Having MS, I can relate to the "loud" issue...bothers me to no end when my husband & daughter chat with their big voices right behind the love seat I'm sitting in..can't they go talk in the crawl space or something? I saw Vince's interview with Ernie Anastos, and told myself not to forget the name of the book. Ordered it to my Amazon Kindle App eBookEdition, so I can read White on Black page format. I belong to 3 or 4 MS Facebook Groups and recommended it to all, including my fav Chef (with MS) Trevis Gleason in Ireland. Many said, " I have to get this, Thanks!" I believe I've earned a finder's fee, Dr. Malacuso.. Loved the book.

73 of 74 people found the following review helpful. ingenious. creative. inspiring. = great coloring experiences and hours of relaxation By BellaBella by the sea ~~~ Another beautiful imaginative coloring book by Angie Grace. Some of the designs have a sense of spinning saucers, globes or moving spirals. In other words, in Ms. Grace's Balance Volume 1 book there are a lot of flowing ribbons and such. In "Centered" this one is different in that there are some designs with a sense of quirky mechanical movement - genius drawing, in my humble opinion. The particulars us colorists are looking for:~ generous 50 designs~ about 1/4 of the designs are a modified square design, the rest are round mandalas about 7" across~ each design has it's dedicated page, no messing up the back side~ good quality paper~ excellent printing resolution with thin lines~ alcohol markers will bleed through, suggest personal use copying onto 60 lb. cover stock paper to reduce the amount of ink used~ no repeats, each drawing is delightfully stunning and unique~ unfortunately, no perforated pages for easy removalLucky us, the creative possibilities of color choices is endless and no two completed designs will be the same. This brings out our creative juices while at the same time relaxing as our particular designs begin to pop out with the use of our colored pencils, different gel markers, and alcohol markers.

It is created in the same imaginative style and Intricate detail By Jackie Cooper If you loved Angie Grace’s coloring book Balance you are going to love this coloring book Angie has created, in the same imaginative style, with the same intricate detail that made Balance a best seller. This book is full of captivating, flowing, meticulously detailed, flawlessly balanced, intricate concentric patterns in circle form that will inspire you to color every single one.The illustrations in this book bring out your imagination, stimulate creativity, and inspire you, plus as you become engaged in the enjoyable activity of Coloring; it calms you and almost immediately starts to reduce your stress level.1. This lovely square book is 8 ½ “x 8 ½ “, with 50 (6 ½” to 7”) circular, intricately detailed illustrations, printed one per page, (the back side of each page is blank).2. I tested Fiskars Gel Pens, Crayola and Prisma colored pencils: The colors lay down bright and smoothly making this book a joy to color. Plus the Fiskars Gel Pens do not bleed through the paper.4. Irma Scribbler Get Ink Pens, Sharpie ultra fine markers, Pentel fine point markers, Bic Mark it ultra fine, and Triplus Fineliner markers leak through the paper, place a piece of paper behind the page you are coloring and leave it there until your picture is dry to prevent damage to the next picture.5. The illustrations in this book are the same size as the illustrations in many full sized coloring books.6. The illustrations end 3/4inch from the binding, so there is plenty of room to take this to an office supply store and have them cut off the binding if you want the pictures out of the book. I personally use my box cutter to remove pages from coloring books, I place a piece of cardboard under the page I want to remove, use a ruler to get a straight cut and cut the page out. With these books you can also heat the binding with a hair dryer to loosen the glue and remove the page.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Another winner from Angie Grace ... By L. Mountford I got hooked on Angie Grace coloring books a couple of years ago when I purchased Baubles (Angie's Patterns, Vol. 4) and Ink Doilies (Angie's Patterns, Vol. 1). I now own several, and when I saw that a new one was coming out, naturally I had to have it!Angie has an easily recognizable style: not many sharp angles, lots of "woven" and interlaced ribbon-like elements, a soft smooth feel. I've noticed it mature over the years, and her more recent books really play on these traits. This one is very similar to Balance: a lot of "mandala"-like designs, several square, each with a discernible center (I always start coloring in the center -- that's just my little "quirk"). But it's different enough that you won't feel like you're seeing the same patterns. These are more intricate, with more elements. Most of the designs are incredibly detailed, so you'll need to use fine-point markers or colored pencils for the best results. Images are printed on one side only, so you needn't worry about bleed through ruining the image on the reverse. I always put a sheet or two of printer/copier paper behind the page I'm coloring to protect the next image in the book. The paper is good quality, and although this is bleed-through with markers, there's not a lot of feathering. Still, a light touch when coloring with markers is always a good idea.Overall, I'm thrilled with this new addition to my Angie Grace collection and expect to get hours of colorful relaxation with it.

Why would an average person read this book? We are all one slip and fall, one skiing injury, one work accident away from a spinal injury. Most heal quickly, without any lasting effects. Others suffer permanent injury to the spinal cord, requiring constant care and medical intervention. Some, like myself, have degenerative spinal diseases. These cause small scars on the cord and myelin, which never repairs itself. My own condition is the reason I read this book. The research is sound. The story is a personal and all to common one. The expense of care is astronomical, yet there is hope. By reading this book, I found the truths behind what it takes to be a physician specialising in spinal cord injuries. The ongoing and probable research interventions are astounding. I recommend this book to anybody need who knows of a wheelchair hound person, anyone with spinal problems and doctors who care about the treatment of these injuries.

By Amazon Customer It's an incredibly daunting task to try and understand a spinal cord injury, and even more challenging to bring therapies to patients that will reverse paralysis. Kate does a terrific job of explaining both the injury and the road to finding cures, in friendly language that lay readers can understand. It's a book that spinal cord injury survivors, family members, clinicians and scientists can embrace, and a must-read for anyone who wants to work toward eliminating this devastating condition. The illustrations are fantastic and really clarified the concepts for me.

This book does an excellent job explaining the science underlying spinal cord injuries and potential treatments in layman's terms. Even further, the book helps understand the scientists doing research on spinal cord injury and the funding of that research which is very critical. Lastly, if you are an advocate who wants to advance the field of spinal cord injury research and treatments, this book will help you get started on that path. I highly recommend this book for everybody affected by spinal cord injury.

Ryan's Dance With Dragons, Or Vaelin Al Boring By Big Illy Style I have a lot of the same criticisms, and share the same bafflement as just about every other reader. The practically unanimous consensus is that this book is NOWHERE near as good as the first. I thought Blood Song was a cut above story, and it really ended strong with great promise for more story to come. But to say Tower Lord is not as good as Blood Song is to miss the real story here.Tower Lord is such a steep fall as to simply astonish you that it's from the same writer. This was not a story that had to be forced; Ryan ended BS with a lot of world to explore and seemed to have a clear handle on the pieces moving beyond the reader's vision. Yet, Tower Lord almost entirely avoids these pieces, and if anything, reveals less about the real threat to this world, the history, or the magical elements than what was explored in Blood Song. Things that don't get satisfactory treatment: the Seventh Order, the story of the One Who Waits, the Ally (same as One Who Waits?), the Ally's henchmen (3 of them?), the story of Vaelin's parents and what they were really up to with Vaelin being sent to the Sixth Order, what the Alpiran Empire did with Vaelin for five years, Vaelin's trial there (OK, pretty much anything with Vaelin), the deal with Frentis and his scars, etc. It's all very cursory, but that's what we all came here to read about. Not the endless marching through the forests. If Ryan wanted to write the next Game of Thrones, he has succeeded only in writing a pale imitation to Dance With Dragons. This entire book is about characters traveling from one place to another, just like Tyrion, Brienne, Jaimie and seemingly everybody else in ADWD. The four characters in this book are eternally on the move with seemingly no change or consequence. This is extremely boring, and the endless battles and fights the characters get into do not liven things up--they all just blend together.I was initially interested in the different character viewpoints, but that quickly soured. It's not just that the character arcs are predictable (utterly so!), but that every single character speaks with the SAME VOICE. Try reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. Say what you will about it's enormous length and numerous characters--each POV features a unique perspective and voice easily identifiable to that character. This is true of Jordan's characters across the sexes. Mat's chapters have an enormously different feel from Perrin's chapters, and the same for Nynaeve versus Elayne, and on and on. The same is true of many great authors. Not so here, and this is really shocking. Vaelin, Lyrna, Frentis, and Reva's chapters all feel as if they are from the same POV with only exceedingly minor differences. Do you ever get tired of the reluctant hero cliché that plagues 99% of modern story and film? Well, you'll get your fill here because every single character is that way. All four are amazing warriors, leaders, and brilliant tacticians of course (within the confines of the story--you won't actually feel that way), and all four feel endlessly guilty about causing death and violence, even when they are only involved in defending themselves and others. I am so sick of the cliché of good people blaming themselves for the actions of evil ones, like the hero who blames himself because his implacably evil foe harms an innocent to get at the hero. This sort of thing happens all the time in this book, and everyone of these damn characters always reacts with same variation of "That guy's terrible cruelty is my fault because I'm the one he wants." In real life, when somebody does something mean, no matter how petty, most people don't sit around brooding and saying, "Y'know, really I've got some blame here for that guy cutting me off in traffic. Why, if only I'd left the house half an hour earlier, I wouldn't have been here for this guy to swoop in front of me, so that's on me." What the hell? This sort of writing is not only terrible on its face, it's been done to death for decades now. See Harry Potter. Hell, see the Wheel of Time. In this book (and unlike Blood Song), the unwarranted navel-gazing is constant with every character. Couldn't there be a single one who generally reacts to battle with the attitude that they did what they had to do? There should be some tall in the saddle John Waynes to counter balance the hand-wringing, head-hanging Jake Gyllenhalls in this book.Like I said, all the characters feel the same. Lyrna and Reva don't "feel" like female characters. If Ryan hadn't thrown in a weird May-December lesbian romance with Reva, I probably would have forgotten the character was a girl. The lesbian angle also feels forced and distracting, as if Ryan was trying to hit all the bases. And of course, the romance is handled in a clichéd manner. Reva is religious and her feelings are a source of shame and torment to her (this is more declared than really felt in the writing), and of course the religious figures in the book all use it to treat her as scum. The modern parallels are too clumsily inserted, and I daresay not accurate. But whatever your feelings on the culture war angle, it's not original, and therefore it's not very interesting. It was cliché 15 years ago when American Beauty rode the tormented self-hating gay storyline to the Academy Awards red carpet. Yet here we are, still being fed the same bland pudding for the umpteenth time. It lost its flavor a long time ago.Now let's get to the heart of problem: Vaelin Al Sorna. Our hero, the reason everyone is picking up this book in the first place. It's an exaggeration to say he's barely in this book. Sure, there's a character named Vaelin who appears in a few (very few) chapters, but I'm starting to wonder if he wasn't possessed by the One Who Waits off-screen because he's NOTHING at all like the character from the first book. Here, he's a haunted, passive, burnt out shell. Think Steven Seagal in On Deadly Ground versus Seagal in Hard to Kill. At the end of Blood Song, he was a renewed man burning with purpose. That purpose was to find Sherin, rescue Frentis, and figure out how to stop the One Who Waits. Clear. Simple. In Tower Lord, Vaelin has almost no thought of Sherin, and immediately abandons his mission to rescue Frentis at the request of the King. This is completely out of character for a man who finished the first book battle tested and ready to reclaim his own destiny. He was unshackled and ready to rumble. Forging your own path was a big theme of Blood Song, and it was the great conflict in his character that serving the King led him to do things he was personally opposed to, and the reader was there to see if Vaelin could reconcile the various conflicts of king, religion, morality, and personal desire. That's not here, folks. Instead, we keep waiting for the characters to get to Alltor, and then Vaelin does something extraordinarily stupid as a military commander (but it works out no problem at all because FANTASY HERO), and there's a weirdly abrupt ending. Oh, and the one scene that promised to be interesting and connected to Blood Song--Lyrna's meeting with the Mahlessa--was instead cryptic and confusing.Let's sum it up: boring plot, bland same-same characters, clumsy modern culture war crap, complete indifference to the Blood Song deep storyline, older than the pyramids guilty battle weary hero conscience crap, and a neutered unrecognizable Vaelin Al Sorna. What the hell happened?

A few run-on sentences jumped out here and there. But overall, the characters were engaging, the story was interesting, the fantasy was fun. And there was a cool twist at the end.Now this. The writing is bad. SO BAD. So, so bad you guys. Anthony likes commas instead of periods. Anthony likes WORDS, SO MANY WORDS in every sentence. If I were to write this review as me, I would say: the book was bad. If I were to write this review as Anthony, I would say: "Reading this book brought a great level of destruction to my mood, greater than ever previously witnessed, as I turned the last page, I began to cry, as there could be no satisfactory conclusion found anywhere in sight, and the realization dawned upon me, like a dark storm cloud, that I had forced myself to read the whole thing for naught, whilst my heart longed for something so much better."I might read book 3, but only if Anthony gets a new editor. I miss the Vaelin that had a personality.

I don't want to belabor the negative reviews and pile on this book. That I am posting at all is because oh how sorely disappointed I am. There was one review I read that struck to the heart of what is wrong with this book. If you bought this book expecting Blood Song #2 as many of us did and will continue to do so... Well that's not what you're getting. Blood Song was the haunting riveting coming of age of Vaelin Al Sorna. This book.. It's the story of Lyrna, Frentis, and Reva guest starring some guy named Vaelin. But don't be mistaken. It's not the same Vaelin from Book 1. This guy is some pacifist who spends the paltry pages devoted to him riding to and fro on a horse. Tower Lord? The name of the book is a travesty. Vaelin spent maybe 2 days as Tower Lord and made no meaningful contribution to being a Tower Lord except to leave the place soon after arriving. Blood Song #2? No that doesn't exist either as you have known it. It's now some Broadway tune you have to sing. Beware. If you do it too long, you die from a nosebleed. So don't expect it to be used in any meaningful way.If you don't want to read about this Vaelin Al Boring, then you won't have to. The majority of the book is devoted to Superwoman Reva. Who's that? Some character we don't know or care about who is forced upon us as the heroine of Tower Lord. The 6th Order trains boys over 20 years to become amazing warriors. Who needs that? 2 weeks with Vaelin and no more than 5 sparring matches and you've got yourselves the world's best swordswoman and master of the bow. So now we can follow her on her adventures tackling her daddy issues and becoming the hero of LGBT rights. If that's not to your liking you can read about Frentis and his relationship issues. Or maybe Lyrna. The world's smartest woman with a pet shark. How did we go from seeing Vaelin grow and develop his skills over time in Book 1 to this uninspiried insipid multiple POV mess of Book 2 featuring characters that break every notion of character development that happened in the first book? Overnight heroes with amazing magically developed skills and closet personal issues they have to deal with. It seems like Editorial intrusion in a big negative way. I can see some editor changing Anthony Ryan from a brilliant new on the scene writer, to GRRM lite. "Lets change to POV like Martin" "Let's add some strong female perspectives" "Best make her lesbian. Thats a niche we can target" "This mysterious danger from Beyond? Too confusing. Doesnt work the focus groups. Let's make it Evil Empire with generic slave soldiers"I will be buying Book 3 when it comes out. But only because of the brilliance of Book 1. Please go back to your original story telling Anthony Ryan. And his editors.. Stay out his way. We don't want to read a book by GRRM or Robert Jordan lite. We want to discover more about the world and the character that we were introduced to in Book 1. What was promised in the titles. The Blood Song of Book 1 and the Tower Lord of Book 2. This book featured neither.

Lamb of god vocalist D. Randall Blythe finally tells the whole incredible story of his arrest, incarceration, trial, and acquittal for manslaughter in the Czech Republic over the tragic and accidental death of a concertgoer in this riveting, gripping, biting, bold, and brave memoir. On June 27, 2012, the long-running, hard-touring, and world-renowned metal band lamb of god landed in Prague for their first concert there in two years. Vocalist D. Randall "Randy" Blythe was looking forward to a few hours off—a rare break from the touring grind—in which to explore the elegant, old city. However, a surreal scenario worthy of Kafka began to play out at the airport as Blythe was detained, arrested for manslaughter, and taken to Pankrác Prison—a notorious 123-year-old institution where the Nazis' torture units had set up camp during the German occupation of then-Czechoslovakia, and where today hundreds of prisoners are housed, awaiting trial and serving sentences in claustrophobic, sweltering, nightmare-inducing conditions. Two years prior, a 19-year-old fan died of injuries suffered at a lamb of god show in Prague, allegedly after being pushed off stage by Blythe, who had no vivid recollection of the incident. Stage-crashing and -diving being not uncommon occurrences, as any veteran of hard rock, metal, and punk shows knows, the concert that could have left him imprisoned for years was but a vague blur in Blythe's memory, just one of the hundreds of shows his band had performed over their decades-long career. At the time of his arrest Blythe had been sober for nearly two years, having finally gained the upper hand over the alcoholism that nearly killed him. But here he faced a new kind of challenge: jailed in a foreign land and facing a prison sentence of up to ten years. Worst of all, a young man was dead, and Blythe was devastated for him and his family, even as the reality of his own situation began to close in behind Pankrác Prison's glowering walls of crumbling concrete and razor wire. What transpired during Blythe's incarceration, trial, and eventual acquittal is a rock 'n' roll road story unlike any other, one that runs the gamut from tragedy to despair to hope and finally to redemption. While never losing sight of the sad gravity of his situation, Blythe relates the tale of his ordeal with one eye fixed firmly on the absurd (and at times bizarrely hilarious) circumstances he encountered along the way. Blythe is a natural storyteller and his voice drips with cutting humor, endearing empathy, and soulful insight. Much more than a tour diary or a prison memoir, Dark Days is D. Randall Blythe's own story about what went down—before, during, and after—told only as he can.

Dark Days: A Memoir, by D. Randall Blythe

Review Advance praise for Dark Days"Those of us who are familiar with Mr. Blythe's lyrics will be pleased to find that this book is full of all the impassioned, defiant, and bitingly funny writing we've come to expect from him. For those who aren't, I can only say that I'm jealous. You're about to discover a writer whose mind and heart are completely alive on every page. Dark Days is an utterly transfixing story of one man's journey through several hells. Some of these are of the kind fate puts us in. The others are the ones that always seem to burn inside us. It absolutely blew me away."—Kevin Powers, National Book Award finalist and author of The Yellow Birds"Randy Blythe survived an ordeal nobody should ever have to face. Wrongly accused of manslaughter in a foreign country, he bravely chose to go to trial rather than run. This book is a fascinating account about how to do the right thing when everything goes wrong."—Brad Warner, author of Hardcore Zen and Don't Be a Jerk"Harrowing and funny, bleak and hopeful, intelligent and earthy, and above all just really well-written, Dark Days is as good as rock memoirs get."—Michael Azerrad, author of Our Band Could Be Your Life and Come as You Are: The Story of NirvanaBillboard, “This Summer’s Music Must-Reads,” 5/30/15“Recounts a horrifying incident and its aftermath.”Richmond Magazine, July 2015“Dark Days…brings readers deep—roughly 500 pages deep—into [Blythe’s] bout with alcoholism and through the still-surreal story of being arrested, jailed and tried on charges that he caused the death of a teenage fan injured at a 2010 Lamb of God concert.”Downtown Magazine, 7/7/15“Entirely the opposite of a happy-go-lucky rock star memoir, Dark Days is about Randy’s journey, looking back on everything he went through in a land where one is not innocent until proven guilty. One does not have to be a metal fan—or even previously aware of Lamb of God—to appreciate Dark Days, as it comes from the perspective of an introspective, good-natured person trying to do the right thing”Village Voice, 7/10/15“Fluid, literary prose…[An] intensely detailed memoir.”Boston Globe, 7/23/15“Gripping.”MediaMikes.com, 7/23/15“Riveting, bold and brutally honest Dark Days: A Memoir isn’t your everyday rock and roll memoir…Blythe recounts his experiences in such a way that you almost feel the emotion coming from the words on the pages…Dark Days is not just for fans of Lamb of God or heavy metal. The book is a must for anyone interested in a unique story of injustice and the long arduous journey one man took to clear his name.”Lithium Magazine, 7/31/15“In Dark Days, Blythe takes the reader day by day, through his arrest and incarceration. He speeds things up and slows things down in just the right places, heightening the engagement level for the reader. Lamb of God fans, and metal fans will surely enjoy this book. Music fans and casual readers will ALSO really enjoy this book. Dark Days contains some sardonic wit, razor sharp insights, and a level of honour and integrity that many, if put into the same situation as the author, might not have shown…Blythe captures so much emotion within this book – hopelessness, anger, frustration, self-questioning (even a bit of loathing) and ultimately an intent to do the right thing no matter the cost…An engaging book.”My Big Honkin Blog, 7/22/15“The book takes on a very authentic feel early on, with reproductions of notes scrawled in a very rough hand…They offer a depth of clarity that is amazing in its level-headedness, yet painful in their desperation. [Blythe’s] description of the dank, crumbling, 123 year old prison and the dark cell he called home for over a month from shortly after his arrest to his making bail reads like something straight out of a James Bond movie and a villain’s lair. Dark Days illustrates Blythe’s iron grip on his reality; this guy knows pretty clearly who he is and his place in the world, truly a rarity for a rock star.”Loudwire.com, 8/4/15“A tremendous read…Randy leaves no stone unturned, no detail astray and no emotion unexplored, creating one of the most dense and honest reads you’ll ever get from a musician’s memoir.”BackstageAxxess.com, 8/6/15“Engrossing…Blythe proves to be a gifted writer as he transports the reader back through those awful days with detailed accounts and often humorous anecdotes…Dark Days is a gripping read that not only sheds light on the circumstances of his arrest and trial but on the character of the author himself as his integrity and candor serve as an example to all.”GeekNation.com, 8/31/15“An absolutely astounding, brave, and gut-wrenching book…If you read one book this year, make it Dark Days.”South China Morning Post, 9/5/15“[A] moving book…Gritty and believable, the book reveals the life of a ‘budget rock star’ and what it's like to have a drink problem. He doesn't use a ghost writer, which is refreshing, and he has a somewhat raw, natural talent for writing. He is sensitive to the loss of the young fan from the Czech Republic (and my own heart goes out to that family). However, he has his own story to tell about his temporary incarceration and trial. It is dramatic, but there are some great laughs thrown in, too. Read it.

By Sean Gdula This story is something that you only can dream of and you would think it was fiction if you didn't know better. The circumstances surrounding the story are tragic, sad, happy. Honestly, there is no overall good or bad outcome in the end. There can't be. There just is an end and you have to take that for what it's worth and reflect on it. Personally, I find the story to be organically very existential in nature. Even if you "know the story" behind this book you don't "know the story" until you've read it from Randy's perspective. It's a mind blowing read.

Blythe presents a very interesting story, told in chronological order from the moment he was arrested in Prague, with the bulk of the tale encompassing his 30+ day stay in prison, and concluding with his acquittal. Not only does this book give insight into Blythe's mind and personality but he does a superb job taking the reader on his journey. That journey was sometimes terrifying, confusing and occasionally funny. You truly gain some perspective into his ordeal and it forces you to wonder how you would have handled being in a similar situation. It is one thing to suddenly (and surprisingly) face prison time for something that you didn't know about, but facing that prospect in a foreign country with different laws and practices, not to mention a whole other language (!!!) had to be overwhelming, which is one of the reasons this book is so enthralling. To read about his experience and learn how he coped is quite a tale.As much as I liked this book, the two criticisms that I have concern his prose. One, perhaps Blythe is trying too hard to impress but he either wrote this book with a thesaurus by his side or he does possess an extensive vocabulary. Either way, just because you know the words doesn't mean you should use loquacious umpteen times when an occasional "he wouldn't stop talking" would suffice.Secondly, there are many portions that were simply too long, with multiple examples when the reader got the point on the first try. Some trimming would have made this a much more lean and engrossing read. This is definitely a wonderful effort for a first time author. I hope Blythe continues to write and I hope any future offerings will be more tightly composed, not to mention happier.

Great Chapter in Saga By Ron Fortier This is as yet another action packed adventure taking place in the fictional sci-fi mythology created by Van Allen Plexico call The Shattering. In this mythos, mankind exists in a universe made up of three distinct level of reality; the Above, where dwell gods with amazing powers, the Middle (or for want of a better term, our own universe) made up of we mere mortals and lastly the Below, home to assorted demons and other monstrous creatures. In his galaxy spanning saga, most of the drama results from unexpected interactions between these three levels which tend to lead to cataclysmic results. In one of Plexico’s first books, “Lucien – Dark God’s Homecoming,” we were given a glimpse of this universe long after the old god’s from the Above had been vanquished via an act of betrayal amongst one of their owns. Then, in subsequent titles, Plexico opted to move around to other parts of his mythos and chose to weave stories that for the most part happened in his imagined future. Now, with “Banarak – Storming the Gates,” he takes back in time and spins the fantastic story of the actual birth of the Above gods. The setup is quickly related. In the distant future mankind has launched itself into space hoping to find new worlds to colonize and guarantee the continuation of our species. Almost immediately star-gates are discovered at various points in space which allow us to leap front across the galaxies and soon seven worlds are settled and a burgeoning Empire of Man is about to be established. But just as quickly as the gates were found, they suddenly, without warning, cease functioning and thus seven separate human planets learn they must forge on independent of the others. Thus seven different cultures continue to evolve over the next few decades, each establishing its own unique identity. The only single unifying tradition to remain viable on all seven isolated empires is their common religion; the Church of the Seven Stars. Then, just as mysteriously as they stopped functioning, the star-gates are reactivated by forces unknown. On the human world of Majondra, the military commander Constantine Baranak devises a plan to use the gates to invade and conquer the other six empires thus establishing one cohesive galaxy spanning regime. Aiding him in this audacious scheme are his siblings and his son, Gaius, who also serves as Constantine’s military aide. On the eve of this stellar invasion, Constantine is betrayed and assassinated by a high priest of the church at the same time Majondra comes under attack by a rival empire. It is left to Gaius to fathom how his father’s bold scheme was discovered and who amongst the royal family betrayed them. One of Plexico’s hallmarks is the breakneck speed at which he propels his plot never allowing his reader a moment’s respite as his protagonist is plunged into one amazing adventure after another. He creates unique, alien allies and foes that confront Gaius at every turn until in the end; his family’s very survival depends on his keen insights into both their various natures. Dealing with cosmic forces beyond understanding, Constantine’s son must gamble with the fate of his people to either achieve a bold new future or fail and watch them totally destroyed. “BANARAK – Storming the Gates,” is a space opera thrill ride that never disappoints. If you have never a Van Allen Plexico space adventure, this is clearly the place to start.

And he’s injecting it healthy doses of fantasy with hints of the superhero.I started reading in the middle of his sprawling series with Baranak: Storming the Gates. In it, humans have discovered that the long dormant gates between stars have started functioning again after a long dark age that found Earth and her colonies isolated from each other. The gates, built by a race far older than Homo sapiens, allowed humanity to spread to six other worlds. The story begins with the murder of Constantine Baranak, a general with a plan to reunite the old Terran Empire. Before son Gauis’s eyes, his father is incinerated by a suicidal priest with an incendiary device just as Constantine’s armies are about to fan out across the seven worlds. An emergency meeting of the Baranak family, who all but rule Gaius’s homeworld of Majondra, reveals a traitor in their midst, but not the traitor’s identity. Gaius follows a stranger skulking about the family estate until he accidentally wanders down a “Path,” a connection between dimensions that reveals how the gates between stars worked in the past. Gaius meets Istari, a near immortal alien with title “the Renegade” for opposing his fellow immortals scheme to become gods.Plexico integrates fantasy into a science fiction epic by presenting such things as the Paths as technology older and far more advanced than anything humans have ever seen. Equal parts Game of Thrones and Doctor Who (if not quite so timey wimey), Plexico’s work incorporates gods and pocket universes with equal ease and promises there are even more bizarre things in heaven and Earth (such as they are here). He calls it space opera, and it certainly fits that description. But it hits on fantasy without any part of it becoming supernatural. And it parallels the myths of old, suggesting that maybe the likes of Zeus or Odin weren’t nearly as immortal as legend suggests.

As it went on it just got better and better. This author has a series of books that are in the same universe. I can't wait to read the next one. This is the start of the gods and how they got to be that way. The story is being told by Baranak himself in the future to another person you will find out later.Seriously fantastic I can't wait to read more.

Great Steampunk Sci-Fi Work By Maverick Who you gonna call?In Madeleine Holly-Rosing's alternate American timeline, America is lead by Great Houses, who rule over the many classes of the lower commoners, highlighting and exaggerating the divisions of class and race that exist and persist in our world. In this world the realm of spirits is very close to the world of the living, and when something comes through or is left behind it can cause havoc among those that would believe that nothing can happen that lies outside of their philosophies. Striving to protect the balance is a former Pinkerton and a loose coalition of folks comprising various unusual skills. This is the world that Holly-Rosing offers us glimpses into with her comic Boston Metaphysical Society and her new collection of novellas and short stories: Prelude.Set in an alternate antebellum period, America is rebuilding itself while the uneasy truce between Northern and Southern Houses keeps political lines shifting like sand dunes. The main thrust of the comic follows the group of ghost and demon hunters and prominent thinkers and inventors of the day, and Prelude gives us much more depth of the world and the vibrant characters that inhabit it. Mixing some standard steampunk tropes with a compelling character driven narrative, she presents us with some very complex characters who deal with a world that won't stay steady for them, battling with powers that put them in the line of fire from all sides, leaving them no choice but to act. Each character has a unique morality fitting their station, and nothing is gained easily where loss is sudden and often tragically complete. What I love about these stories is how they involve characters who don't necessarily have a lot of face time in the comic (especially poor Andrew, who gets to live a LOT more) and each one offers us so much.I enjoy the comic quite a bit, it keeps many mysteries in the air that keep the reader in the best kind of suspense, but I love the expanded world building of this collection. There's an awesome sense of someone describing a world they see in such incredible detail, and each story offers a unique look at someone who only passes through the comic's story tangentially or through mention only, and it feels like we're getting a glimpse into the deep bible of a series, seeing the lines that connect every character through the narrative and how the world truly works. Themes glanced on in the comic are more fully fleshed out, and especially with the character of Granville she manages to not only more fully explain how his motivations came to be what they are, but manages to imbue him with a sense of honor and decorum that every character gains from this treatment.Rather than feeling like an add-on, these seven stories seem to help complete the world, but still leave more questions than answers in the best way. My favorite story is Steampunk Rat, and it boggles my mind how the boy we meet in it becomes the stoic house leader we see online, and the disparity between the two makes me hope for more glimpses into his life and that of the folks that make up his experience. Holly-Rosing's writing is tight and energetic, and makes me want to know more about this fascinating place full of wondrous people that she's conjured for us on every page.If you’re looking for a solid steampunk adventure with ghosts, demons and mysteries galore fueled by a sterling imagination and filled with interesting and heartbreaking characters, then this is the series for you, and Prelude will have you all in.Share the stories that move you.

Airships, Demons & Steampunk Rats By Ralph Vaughan To be frank, I must admit two things: first, I am a fan of the Boston Metaphysical Society web-comic from which these stories are derived and to which they serve, as the title of this collection suggests, as a prelude; second, of the seven stories in this collection, I am familiar with five and have already reviewed them elsewhere. There is nothing to make from my first admission, but the obvious question stemming from my second is, “Is this collection so good that you got it to read the two new stories?” The answer, for me, is not only “Yes,” but “Yes, absolutely,” but that is not the whole answer. Let me explain. In both the comic and the short stories, Madeline Holly-Rosing has created a vivid and intriguing parallel reality, one in which the steampunk ethos holds sway, a world with both depth and breadth. Her world has a fascinating history, evidenced by the infuriatingly brief glimpses we are afforded in the stories. In one of the new stories, “The Clockwork Man,” we are given perhaps the clearest picture of the War of the Great Houses revealed thus far, as well as the ethics and motivations of the ruling elite, the masters and scions of the Great Houses. The other new story, “The Way Home,” also gives a wider glimpse of the world, but the information is more metaphysical than historical, more personal than general, more anguish than rejoicing. Madeline, however, is a storyteller, not an historian, and like every great storyteller she tells her story through the lives of her characters, by sharing who they are within, by explaining the fires which have forged them, and by revealing their triumphs…and failures. In the web-comic, we see their actions and read their dialogue, but in the stories we learn who they are and how they became that way. The stories give us a depth of information and understanding denied to a comic-book format, just as books do in contrast to the films derived from them. The mind’s eye gives us a vision of a world that can only be suggested by the painter or cinematographer, no matter how talented or visionary. If I am a fan of the web-comic, then I am a follower of the stories that flow from Madeline’s pen, acquiring them as they are published.Which brings us to a corollary of the original question: “Did you get the collection solely for two new stories?” To read the new stories was only one reason for getting the collection. I would have got the stories individually, if not offered in this format, so to get them together makes sense. But in getting the collection I now have the five previously published stories all in one place. I re-read stories and books that I like, so if I want to read again all the stories straight through, I can do so with ease. On the other hand, if I want to return only to “The Demons of Liberty Row” or to the quirky realm of the “Steampunk Rat” (my favorite story), I can do that as well. For the reader who has read only one or two of the stories or (can it be?) none at all, then the choice to buy the collection becomes simple economics…you save money. So, there you are. So, read.

By JReads Boston Metaphysical Society: PRELUDE is a collection of short stories that have very important links to the Boston Metaphysical Society web comics. Written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing, Prelude is a cross between an origin story and a supplementary reading that makes the Boston Metaphysical Society universe far more intriguing. The alternate history of Boston Metaphysical Society is every bit entertaining. Ghosts, demons, supernatural beings and prominent Families that vie for ultimate economic and political control – what’s not to like? It's a rarity to like every story in a collection, but I love them all - all seven of them. While it’s not really a requirement to read the web comics series, I would have to say that the impact of the short stories would be more pronounced if the reader has read the Boston Metaphysical Society comics. The secrets and revelations in the stories have a greater impact if one is familiar with the alternate world so cleverly created. While this is primarily a steampunk collection, it crosses genres that make the whole of Boston Metaphysical Society greater than the sum of its parts.
