And, it already provides some of the answers that The Human Division left unsaid! So Yay! This in not a stand alone, be sure to read the first book in this duology (The Human Division) or I expect you will be lost. I found myself actually cheering for Rafe as this story/novella concluded... And with John Scalzi's promise that we will see a lot more of Rafe as this serialized story progresses... I got so excited that I wend ahead and pre-ordered the other 3 novellas... And now I'm waiting impatiently for part 2 to be released...

Another engaging character in the Old Man's War universe By JZS “The Life of the Mind” is the first of the four novellas comprising John Scalzi’s upcoming book “The End of All Things”. I saw the listings for the four back in May, but, as much as I love the “Old Man’s War” series, I thought I would wait for the complete book (already on “pre-order”) since I devoured each book in the rest of the series in one sitting. The frustration of waiting for the rest of the story would drive me crazy. But then a friend introduced me to NetGalley, a source for pre-release “proof” copies of upcoming books. Since I’m not a “professional” reader, don’t have a blog and have been know to write, um, “critical” reviews, I didn’t think they would accept me. Then I got an email from them and… I went to town. (Two of the sweetest words in the English language- “free books”) I wanted the first book to be special and since Scalzi is one of my favorite authors and “The Life of the Mind” was just sitting there for the taking… I downloaded :)As I read, I realized that I was smiling like an idiot- so happy to be back in the “Old Man’s” universe. Although given the plot, much less of that universe appears in the story. But Scalzi has once again given us an incredibly engaging character in Rafe Daquin. The intelligence, complexity, imagination and good humor of Scalzi’s writing is a large part of his appeal and the reason he is one of the leaders of Science Fiction today. But for me it has always been the characters that drew me in. They may seem unrealistically intelligent, courageous or even lucky but this is “heroic” sci fi after all. And, like characters from John Perry and Harry Wilson to the alien Hafte Sorvahl, Rafe is a character whose company you enjoy. And Scalzi returns to the “Old Man’s War” first person perspective making Rafe even more relatable. The “proof” copy I read included a large part of the second novella “This Hollow Union” and although it reintroduced another favorite character, Hafte, I felt a pang at leaving Rafe behind- for now.My self-imposed standard for “five stars” is that I want to read it again. While “Life of the Mind” works as a satisfying, stand-alone short story/novella (although it does leave me eager to see what happens next) the story itself wasn’t compelling enough for me to want to re-read. But I am excited to see more of Rafe and the Old Man’s War universe. I guess a re-read of “The Human Division” is in order to tide me over until August.

Picks Up Where The Human Division Left Off; Unique Protagonist By Scott Knight The Life of the Mind, the first story in John Scalzi's new collection The End of All Things, picks up where the last book in the Old Man's War series, The Human Division, left off. The main character is a pilot named Rafe Daquin. He is, quite literally, a brain in a box. How he got there and what he does is the crux of the story.Rafe makes for a fascinating point of view character, as he is rather limited in what he can do and where he can go due to his being just a brain. However, he is connected to his ship, the Chandler. He is a slave to the Rraey, an alien race who opposes the Colonial Union as a member of the group called Equilibrium. Daquin's resourcefulness and intelligence make him an ideal narrator, and his desire for revenge serves to propel the plot along. There are also some appearances by some of the major characters in previous stories, which helps tie in Rafe's tale to the greater whole.Scalzi's writing style is in full force here, with Daquin's humor and sarcasm, along with some fun reveals.I highly recommend The Life of the Mind.I received a preview copy of this story from Tor/Macmillan in exchange for an honest review.
