About the Author Terry Mixon, co-host of the three-time Parsec Award finalist writing podcast The Dead Robots' Society, is the author of the science fiction series Empire of Bones. A former non-commissioned officer with the United States Army 101st Airborne Division, he has dedicated over sixteen years to providing direct computer support to the spaceflight flight controllers in the Mission Control Center at the NASA Johnson Space Center, including Space Shuttle and International Space Station projects.

Once again, a taut science fiction story with twists and turns to keep the pace frenetic. Terry Mixon has upped the ante against the remnants of the Terran Empire! Internal strife and intrigue are counterbalanced with orbital and planetary conflict. The Royal siblings, Ambassador Kelsey Bandar and Captain Jared Mertz, explore both their new found capabilities and personal relationships. The crew and marines aboard the now restored battle cruiser Courageous attempt to put "Paid" to the Pale Ones once and for all.Another book I could not put down. But now that it's finished, sadly I must wait until December for Book Three, Command Decisions. What a great Christmas present that will be!

But Veil of Shadows is even better. It has many of the things science fiction readers demand.There's humor:'Doctor Leonard and his programming henchman returned and wired her up like a stolen grav car.'There are things that go boom:'...she noted where the largest concentration of the enemy was and threw a grenade. When it went off, it was as though the world had ended.'There are guns reminiscent of the main weapon on a "...fully armed and operational battle station!":'The explosives they set off warped the hatch even further, but didn’t open it. Neither did the second set.....She retreated to the rear of the compartment, took cover, and brought the plasma rifle off her back. She trained it on the hatch, and....pulled the trigger. The resulting explosion blew the armored hatch into molten fragments. It did the same for the first ten meters of the corridor....'And for the hardcore among us, Mr. Mixon brought the Hammer of God to the party.:'...she picked up something high above them through the pinnace’s scanners.... The streak in the sky descended with deceptive slowness, almost crawling toward the ground as the pinnace dove for cover.'So, in closing, when you read a story where the author drops a minor celestial body on one of his main characters, you know your in for a hell of a ride.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pale Ones and plasma rifles! Mixon delivers another serving of righteous Mil-SF. By Amazon Customer Hang onto your hats! Captain Jared, Princess Kelsey and friends are back for another episode of ye-olde-pulp-style adventure. I loved the first book in this series, Empire of Bones. It had an open-hearted zestful quality that left me feeling optimistic about science fiction all over again. If that book were a dog, it would be a Labrador puppy.Well, that puppy's grown up now. Scrappier, been in a couple of fights, but still irrepressible. (Aaaand I think I'll quit with the canine metaphors now.) Veil of Shadows finds our heroes exploring the star system where the Pale Ones, the truly creepy villains of the first book, came from. But unknown to them, not everyone on board wants their mission to succeed ...Mixon develops his universe in this instalment, clearing up some of the mysteries from the first book, but leaving many more questions unanswered. There's a delicious twist towards the end that sets the scene for future battles. Both main characters grow more mature along their journey here; Kelsey in particular accomplishes the nearly-impossible trick of being an Indomitable Female Warrior (TM) with a crown, yet ... who isn't hateable, but very sympathetic.My only nitpick with this episode was that the Pale Ones underwhelmed a bit. I was looking forward to more gore. Maybe next time? Hurry up with Book Three, Mixon!
