Aperita offers 28 different races, all distinct. It's not 5 varieties of human, elf and dwarf, either -- though the given rules do allow for a lot of variety with every race. In the back are write-ups for how each race typical considers each of the other races. Dwarf/goblin, sentient bats, centaur, dwarf, elf, equosi, gnome/dwarf, faun, gnome, goblin, human/elf, halfling, human/orc, human, orc/hobgoblin, mer-octopus, elf/centaur, kitsune, sentient ravens, lamia, merfolk/human, merfolk, sentient fungi, nymph, orc, tanuki, sentient monkeys, sentient snakes. This expansion however seems to be how to add the entirety of D&D to FATE. Except the endless combat system. Fortunately it goes with the FATE combat. Except it adds a new variety - a social one where you fight with words trying to destroy a foe in a civil manner - in more added complexity. This is the sad part. In every thing it just adds lots of complexity. A dozen or more half breed character races, fully worked out to add to the regular ones. Even more character classes, also fully burdened with rules on how to have them. If I wanted complexity I would have just gone to D&D. Aether Sea for FATE handled this sort of thing in one twentieth of the verbiage.

Once again, a taut science fiction story with twists and turns to keep the pace frenetic. Terry Mixon has upped the ante against the remnants of the Terran Empire! Internal strife and intrigue are counterbalanced with orbital and planetary conflict. The Royal siblings, Ambassador Kelsey Bandar and Captain Jared Mertz, explore both their new found capabilities and personal relationships. The crew and marines aboard the now restored battle cruiser Courageous attempt to put "Paid" to the Pale Ones once and for all.Another book I could not put down. But now that it's finished, sadly I must wait until December for Book Three, Command Decisions. What a great Christmas present that will be!

But Veil of Shadows is even better. It has many of the things science fiction readers demand.There's humor:'Doctor Leonard and his programming henchman returned and wired her up like a stolen grav car.'There are things that go boom:'...she noted where the largest concentration of the enemy was and threw a grenade. When it went off, it was as though the world had ended.'There are guns reminiscent of the main weapon on a "...fully armed and operational battle station!":'The explosives they set off warped the hatch even further, but didn’t open it. Neither did the second set.....She retreated to the rear of the compartment, took cover, and brought the plasma rifle off her back. She trained it on the hatch, and....pulled the trigger. The resulting explosion blew the armored hatch into molten fragments. It did the same for the first ten meters of the corridor....'And for the hardcore among us, Mr. Mixon brought the Hammer of God to the party.:'...she picked up something high above them through the pinnace’s scanners.... The streak in the sky descended with deceptive slowness, almost crawling toward the ground as the pinnace dove for cover.'So, in closing, when you read a story where the author drops a minor celestial body on one of his main characters, you know your in for a hell of a ride.

Captain Jared, Princess Kelsey and friends are back for another episode of ye-olde-pulp-style adventure. I loved the first book in this series, Empire of Bones. It had an open-hearted zestful quality that left me feeling optimistic about science fiction all over again. If that book were a dog, it would be a Labrador puppy.Well, that puppy's grown up now. Scrappier, been in a couple of fights, but still irrepressible. (Aaaand I think I'll quit with the canine metaphors now.) Veil of Shadows finds our heroes exploring the star system where the Pale Ones, the truly creepy villains of the first book, came from. But unknown to them, not everyone on board wants their mission to succeed ...Mixon develops his universe in this instalment, clearing up some of the mysteries from the first book, but leaving many more questions unanswered. There's a delicious twist towards the end that sets the scene for future battles. Both main characters grow more mature along their journey here; Kelsey in particular accomplishes the nearly-impossible trick of being an Indomitable Female Warrior (TM) with a crown, yet ... who isn't hateable, but very sympathetic.My only nitpick with this episode was that the Pale Ones underwhelmed a bit. I was looking forward to more gore. Maybe next time? Hurry up with Book Three, Mixon!

This book presents a Bibliography of Chinese Human Studies, with commentary, analysis, tables, and graphs by Jim West. This is arcana, buried, disconnected documentation. This bibliography includes over 50 studies of in utero fetal exposure, conducted in the modern era. These provide empirical evidence of ultrasound hazards to humans. The analytic techniques are sophisticated, far exceeding Western studies. Presently, both the mainstream and the critics believe there are few modern ultrasound studies. Decades ago, Western scientists had already found ultrasound hazards by way of animal studies, however, they claimed they were unable to confirm these with human studies, and unable to conduct human studies due to abortion and human rights ethics. Human studies were virtually banned in the Western realm. The medical industry was not reporting any human damage, and thus, it was assumed that humans were resistant to ultrasound toxicity. These studies were previously unknown to the Western realm and little known even in the East. These represent a limited period of new, optimistic research, circa 1988 to 2011. These were pushed aside by a tremendous continual flood of studies that promote ultrasound medical and therapeutic innovations. Because of cultural and language gaps, and an apparent lack of interest by industry to promote these studies, these studies have sat dormant, not discussed outside of China. The studies reside in Chinese online databases in Chinese language. Some of these were roughly and partially translated by machine software. Many are not available through search engines, except directly through the Chinese databases. Their conclusions are stunning, with recommendations that ultrasound sessions should be completely avoided "for a quality pregnancy". Only if there are specific medical indications should ultrasound be recommended, and at minimum intensity settings. A session should last no more than 3 minutes, 5 minutes at most. Multiple sessions should be avoided. These guidelines reflect and confirm the U.S. National Institute of Health "Consensus Statement", published in 1984. Important Book about the Ignored Dangers of Ultrasounds By Ramiel Nagel There is clear evidence that ultrasounds during pregnancy can change fetal tissues.Jim West dug up this impossible to find evidence to make it obviously clear that we shouldnot be haphazardly using video ultrasounds when less invasive technologies can be used.

Opened my eyes that the Chinese were so far ahead on actually doing this science, yet little of their work is available in the west. What other areas of science have the Chinese scientists researched that I will not be able to find due to the willing blindness of scientists to work that does not fit the western marketing a machines?This book is yet another damning indictment of allopathic medicine ruled by short term money gain, and covering up known hazards to the health of people.

When my pregnant spouse received her first ultrasounds, I quickly found reliable references (NIH's national library of health) that clearly showed that ultrasound is damaging to developing mammal brains. The studies on mice and rodents was enough to convince me that prenatal ultrasound is far from the harmless test promoted by the medical industry. This book reveals that the largest body of evidence on ultrasound safety is surprisingly human studies done in China. Since the studies were performed on women about to undergo elective abortions, the studies have controls (no ultrasound), and various levels of ultrasound exposure, at standard power levels (or lower) for diagnostic imaging ultrasound.The results: Diagnostic ultrasound is found to be extremely damaging to the fetus. Even very low power levels and exposure times cause cell death and cell damage.Even before reading this book, I was convinced that prenatal ultrasound is leading to the boom in autism and other developmental disorders in children (ADD, ADHD, etc). After reading this book, any doubt I had about the damaging effects of ultrasound are gone.Jim West does a wonderful job of not only presenting the research, but providing a framework for understanding what is going on. How could the medical doctors and community go on giving more and more frequent, more and more powerful ultrasound exams when this evidence exists? Conflict of interest of the experts in this field explains a lot. The quotes of leading US experts in ultrasound imaging (all MDs) all state diagnostic ultrasound has not been proven harmful (false statement), they worrying indicate more research is needed, giving themselves a more "out."If you or someone you love is pregnant, think before submitting to prenatal ultrasounds. Do yourself a favor: pay the few dollars for this book, and protect your unborn loved one. It is an uphill fight, but you can refuse, or at least limit, prenatal ultrasounds.

That’s the premise (worked out in delicious detail) behind The Elder Ice, a Lovecraftian novella with a fast-moving blend of action, Weird Tales-style intrigue, & secret history. When Harry Stubbs, a retired boxer turned collections agent, tries to recover a mysterious treasure from Shackleton’s Endurance expedition, he quickly finds himself out of his depth. Armed only with his fists and his wits, Stubbs is an unusual protagonist for such an adventure – but the character works well, and Lovecraft fans who appreciate a British tale will find this one hard to put down. The real fun here, however, is in the details. Hambling is obviously familiar with the history of early Antarctic exploration and the intricacies of HPL’s short novel – and uses both to good effect. Recommended for those in search of a “ripping yarn” with some thought behind it.

By spleendingo “The Elder Ice” is actually based somewhat on the arctic expeditions of real world explorer Ernest Shackleton, who led three expeditions to the frozen tundra back in his day. But the author has taken the mundane and turned it into something scary as hell and straight from the twisted depths of a Lovecraftian nightmare.The main character, Harry Stubbs, is an ex boxer. A lug. Highly trained in the fighting sciences but finds himself working for a law firm as an errand boy of the “do what it takes to get it done” variety. In this assignment, he is tasked with tracking down what he believes to be a treasure from an arctic expedition. His nature is one of keeping his head down and simply getting the job done. His only goal is to find what he is told to find and bring it back to his boss to fulfill his obligation.Harry is a no nonsense, get to the point kind of guy. The people he encounters while trying to find this “treasure” are not so much. The more he talks to them, the more it becomes obvious there is something more than just a physical treasure involved. And this is where it gets terrifying. But in the authors hands, Harry Stubbs feels a lot deeper than just being a stooge. “The Elder Ice” is fantastic at fleshing out the characters and giving them layers of food for thought.The creatures he encounters and the things they are capable of in “The Elder Ice” will give you some sleepless nights and fully live up to the great works of Mr. Lovecraft. Unspeakable monstrosities that defy explanation are described in grisly detail to ensure you don’t leave disappointed.I absolutely love the style of writing used in “The Elder Ice”. The story is set in the 1920’s and the author has nailed the conversational tones and attitudes of the times. And it’s the conversations between characters that give them a fully fleshed out feel and makes you feel like you know them. I also like how the author explores each person fully and yet never gets redundant with unnecessary asides.“The Elder Ice” feels a lot longer than the 196 pages would assume. You’ll get lost in this world and characters. And, if you’ve ever read a Lovecraft book, you’ll feel right at home…..and scared! Carpenter Well, this was an unexpected delight.I have obtained some titles by David Hambling for my library but they languished in my to-be-read stack, specifically Shadows from Norwood. I was looking for something to idle away an hour or two, and The Elder Ice caught my eye. I didn't even read the blurb, just sat in my favorite chair and cracked open the book. I was so captivated, I read it all in one sitting.Here are some details about the book. The page count is 128, and note the size is 5.8 x 0.3 x 8.3 .With the large-ish font and the typesetting, it ends up being a very quick read, maybe more a novella than novel. It was printed by Lulu, so maybe it's self-published? I saw maybe 1-2 scattered typographical errors. The cover photo is a frozen cave, which is sort of misleading as the whole of the action takes place in London. Also I saw no attribution of a photographer or artists. For the quality, the price isn't too bad.Ex-boxer Harry Stubbs is investigating the estate of Ernest Shackleton for a law firm, attempting to recover any property that might allow his estate's creditors get some of the money they're owed. It turns out Shackleton may have discovered an artifact under the ice, hinting at an ancient civilization, an object that provides evidence of earth's previous masters, has enormous powers and could be worth millions of pounds. Stubbs interviews Shackleton's friends and family, and attempts to track down his goings on in London, as things get weirder and more dangerous.First of all, I really liked this book. The prose sparkles, and the characters come alive under the author's pen. Clearly Mr. Hambling did his research about Shackleton. Even if we are never on the ice ourselves, we get a sense of it through those who were. There is use of themes familiar to readers of "At the Mountains of Madness" but this is in no way a direct usage of that mythology. Think of it more like he took the basic premise of Lovecraft, modified it to suit his needs, and then used that more as deep background than as a key plot point. Anyway, who cares? I liked the characters, I enjoyed the plot and it all worked.I give The Elder Ice a warm recommendation. I am now going to start on Shadows from Norwood and I've ordered The Dulwich Horror. There is a Harry Stubbs sequel, Broken Meats, I have to look into. More please.

The text is intimidating and the way it is structured by paragraph number is confusing at first. But once you get used to it makes researching the right section simple. The examples given are very instructive and the text references the tax code often enough that if you need to find the actual IRS line you can use the text material to narrow an online search.

The book was filled with information but a hard read, very dense. I would recommend a different book if teachers are thinking about using this for a class. A lot of information in each chapter and for someone that is learning the tax code, it is extremely hard to comprehend.

I bought a used copy for $20 and can use it to study for 5 different courses I am enrolled in. It covers everything: tax procedure, tax research, income taxes, partnerships, gift and estate taxes . . . . I wish I had bought it last year when I was in basic tax. I use it to supplement my casebooks and the IRC itself. For this purpose, and given I have at least a minimum foundation in the material, the book is concise, informative, and well organized. Given other reviews, it may or may not be what someone needs. For my purposes, I would give it 6 stars if I could.
